How to Find the Perfect Cruise with ChatGPT – Step-by-Step

How to find the perfect cruise with ChatGPT

How to Find the Perfect Cruise with ChatGPT

I recently used CruisePlum and ChatGPT to compare dozens of sailings across several major cruise lines. My goal was simple: figure out how to find the perfect cruise with ChatGPT by comparing everything that mattered to us, including destinations, ships, balcony cabins and total vacation costs.

For this technique I used CruisePlum to narrow down options. I’ve long been a fan of CruisePlum for finding cruises. Its search features are powerful and unlike anything else I’ve used. From there I used ChatGPT to research the ships, compare itineraries, estimate additional expenses and organize everything into a useful comparison table.

Together, these tools helped me narrow down the options and find the cruise that best fit our preferences. Here’s how I did it and how you can use the same approach to find your next cruise.

Step 1: Define Your Perfect Cruise

First, I decided which dates, destinations, departure ports and cabin types mattered most. There are lots of websites that help you search for cruises, but CruisePlum’s Detailed Search is an extremely powerful tool that let’s you sift through thousands of cruises in short order.

Rather than searching for a specific ship or cruise line, I started with my ideal cruise and let the search results show me the possibilities.

For this comparison, I used the following criteria:

  • Travel dates: January, February or March 2027
  • Cruise length: 7 nights
  • Region: Eastern Caribbean
  • Departure ports: Miami or Fort Lauderdale
  • Cabin: Ocean-facing balcony or comparable balcony accommodation
  • Excluded ports: Nassau, Bahamas
  • Passengers: Two adults

I wasn’t interested in cruises that stopped in Nassau, so I excluded it entirely. That’s one of the things I like about CruisePlum. Instead of sorting through itineraries with ports I don’t want to visit, I can remove those options from the results.

I also wasn’t committed to a particular cruise line. That allowed me to compare Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian and other lines without searching each company’s website separately.

Step 2: Use Detailed Search to Compare the Right Cabin Types

This is an important detail that can make a big difference in cruise comparisons.

Not all balcony cabins are alike.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships have both traditional ocean-facing balconies and balconies that overlook interior neighborhoods such as Central Park and the Boardwalk.

If you search for the cheapest balcony without distinguishing between those categories, you’re probably looking at prices for an interior-facing balcony on Oasis and Icon class ships, which make them seem like a better deal than they really are.

CruisePlum’s Detailed Search allows you to narrow the results to specific cabin categories.

For cabin type I selected ocean view balconies for Royal Caribbean, infinite verandas for Celebrity and balcony cabins for Norwegian.

Step 3: Give ChatGPT Your CruisePlum Search Results

Once I had my CruisePlum search narrowed down, I took screenshots of the results and uploaded them to ChatGPT.

This eliminated a considerable amount of manual work.

Instead of looking up every ship individually, I asked ChatGPT to create a table showing the ship, departure date, build year, ports of call and cabin price.

I also asked it to sort the results from cheapest to most expensive.

What ChatGPT Can Add to Your Search

CruisePlum does a great job of finding and organizing cruises by price. ChatGPT can help add additional information that makes those results easier to evaluate.

For example:

  • Ship build year: Helps distinguish newer ships from older ones.
  • Ports of call: Shows the specific stops rather than just the general itinerary region.
  • Ship comparisons: Makes it easier to compare ship classes, amenities and cabin configurations.
  • Additional expenses: Estimates what you might spend on dining, drinks, internet and gratuities.
  • Estimated total price: Provides a more realistic comparison than the advertised cruise fare alone.

Step 4: Calculate the Real Cost of Each Cruise

This is where the comparison became especially interesting.

The original CruisePlum results showed some cruises that were considerably less expensive than others. But different cruise lines include different amenities in their fares.

A lower cabin price doesn’t necessarily mean a cheaper vacation.

For example, Norwegian offers Free at Sea and Free at Sea Plus packages that bundle several services. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity offer dining, beverage and internet packages with their own pricing.

I wanted to compare cruises based on a similar vacation experience, rather than simply comparing the lowest available fares.

What I Included in My Comparison

For two adults on a seven-night cruise, I estimated the cost of:

  • Three specialty restaurant dinners per person
  • Premium alcoholic beverage packages for both passengers
  • Streaming-capable Wi-Fi for two devices
  • Daily crew gratuities for both passengers

These aren’t necessarily expenses everyone needs. If you don’t drink alcohol, rarely use Wi-Fi or prefer the included dining venues, your additional costs could be much lower.

However, these were amenities I wanted, so it made sense to include them when comparing cruises.

Estimated Additional Expenses by Cruise Line

After researching package pricing and accounting for the services included with Norwegian Free at Sea Plus, I arrived at the following low-end planning estimates. These are estimates for a particular set of amenities, not guaranteed package prices. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity use dynamic pricing, so their costs vary by sailing and purchase date. The Norwegian charges are drawn from my actual booking. I used the estimated low end of advance-purchase prices for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

Expense Royal Caribbean Celebrity Norwegian
3 specialty dinners per person $180 $324 Included*
Streaming Wi-Fi, 2 devices $250 $230 Included*
Premium drink packages (Celebrity Premium) $1,074 $1,310 Included*
Daily crew gratuities $259 $273 Included*
Free at Sea Plus — — $699.86
Open bar service charge — — $399
Specialty dining service charge — — $120
Total Estimated Add-ons $1,763 $2,137 $1,218.86

*Norwegian’s benefits are accounted for through its base Free at Sea inclusions and the Free at Sea Plus upgrade. Its column shows the actual package and service-charge amounts associated with my booking, rather than separate purchases for each amenity. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity figures are estimated low-end advance-purchase prices, not actual quotes for individual sailings.

These figures were developed in October 2026 for a specific comparison. Cruise lines regularly change package pricing, inclusions and promotions.

For reference, Norwegian describes the benefits of its packages on its Free at Sea information page.

Be Careful Not to Count Gratuities Twice

CruisePlum can include daily crew gratuities in its displayed cabin totals.

That’s useful when comparing overall costs, but it creates a problem if you then add a package that also includes those charges.

For this comparison, I adjusted the CruisePlum prices by subtracting estimated daily gratuities. I then included gratuities in the estimated add-ons.

That way, the same expense wouldn’t be counted twice.

It’s important to understand that these adjusted cruise prices are calculated for comparison purposes. They aren’t necessarily the exact fares you’ll see on the cruise line’s booking website.

Why the Cheapest Cruise Isn’t Always the Best Deal

A low advertised fare can be tempting, but it doesn’t tell you everything about the cost of the vacation. A cruise with a higher starting price could be a better deal if it includes drinks, dining or internet that you’d otherwise pay for separately.

The reverse can also happen. A cheap balcony cabin can become considerably more expensive once you add the packages you actually want. That was the reason I didn’t stop at a simple list of cabin prices.

The right comparison is based on your priorities. If you don’t drink, skip the drink package. If you have a cruise loyalty benefit that covers drinks or internet, account for that too. The goal isn’t to buy every add-on; it’s to compare the price of the experience you’d actually choose.

Step 5: Build a Complete Cruise Price Comparison

After several rounds of refining the search, I had 33 cruises to compare.

I asked ChatGPT to combine the cabin prices, estimated additional expenses, ship ages and ports of call into one table.

The table below shows the lowest estimated total for each ship in my final comparison.

Cruise Price Comparison – October 2026

Departure Ship Built Ports Visited Adjusted Cruise Price Est. Add-ons Est. Total
Jan 3, 2027 Norwegian Aqua 2025 Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, Tortola, Great Stirrup Cay $3,078 $1,218.86 $4,296.86

Prices represent two adults in comparable balcony categories, based on CruisePlum search results from October 13,  2026. Adjusted cruise prices exclude estimated daily crew gratuities, which are incorporated into the add-ons. Package pricing is estimated except where supported by my actual Norwegian booking. These aren’t current booking quotes, and itineraries should be verified with the cruise lines.

The most interesting result was Norwegian Aqua.

Initially, its cabin prices weren’t among the cheapest options. However, after factoring in the amenities I wanted, it became one of the most competitive choices.

It also happened to be the newest ship among my finalists, having entered service in 2025.

What I Actually Did

We’re Diamond Plus members with Royal Caribbean, which means we each receive five complimentary drinks per day. That’s a substantial benefit, and that’s one reason why we’re typically “Loyal to Royal.”

Because of that benefit, my original personal comparison didn’t include the cost of a Royal Caribbean drink package.

For the comparison table above, however, I included estimated drink package costs so the numbers represent an apples-to-apples comparison.

Even with our Diamond Plus benefits factored into my personal comparison, Norwegian Aqua’s January 31, 2027 sailing made the most sense for us.

Using these tools together let me compare the costs, ship build years and ports of call I was actually interested in, all in one table.

What My Norwegian Aqua Booking Actually Cost

Booking Component Amount
Guest fares after promotional savings $2,698.00
Taxes, fees and port expenses $420.00
Specialty dining service charge $120.00
Open bar service charge $399.00
Free at Sea Plus $699.86
Actual Booking Total $4,336.86

Our final estimate for the January 31 sailing was $4,296.86. The actual booking totaled $4,336.86, just $40 more.

That difference wasn’t an unexpected fee or a problem with the estimate. I selected a slightly more expensive cabin.

How to Use ChatGPT to Find Your Perfect Cruise

Once you’ve narrowed down your cruise options, take screenshots of the CruisePlum results, upload them to ChatGPT and paste the following prompt. Adjust as it makes sense for you.

I’m comparing cruises using the attached CruisePlum screenshots.

Create a comparison table that includes:

  • Departure date
  • Cruise ship and year built
  • Cruise length
  • Ports of call
  • Cabin price for two passengers
  • Estimated additional expenses
  • Estimated total vacation cost

For additional expenses, estimate the cost for two adults of:

  • Three specialty dining meals per person
  • An alcoholic beverage package comparable to each cruise line’s premium offering
  • Streaming Wi-Fi for two devices
  • Daily crew gratuities

Account for amenities already included in each cruise line’s fare or available packages. Avoid double-counting gratuities or other charges already included in the displayed prices.

Research current package pricing and use realistic discounted advance-purchase estimates. Clearly identify assumptions and distinguish estimates from verified prices.

If the screenshots contain multiple cabin categories for the same sailing, use the lowest-priced cabin that meets my requirements and avoid duplicate sailings.

Before calculating totals, determine whether the displayed fares already include gratuities, dining packages, beverage service charges or internet access. Explain how these are being handled so no expense is counted twice.

If a price, package inclusion or itinerary cannot be verified, flag it rather than guessing.

Sort the final table by estimated total cost, lowest to highest.

Use the exact cruise dates and prices from my screenshots. Verify ports of call for each sailing rather than assuming cruises on the same ship have identical itineraries.

After the table, briefly identify the three best-value cruises and explain why.

You can copy that prompt directly into ChatGPT, along with your screenshots.

If you’re comparing different cabin types or have different priorities, modify the prompt accordingly.

For example, you could ask it to estimate costs without alcoholic beverages, compare interior cabins instead of balconies, or prioritize cruises with the most ports of call.

Additional Tips for Using ChatGPT to Compare Cruises

Include the Entire Price Column in Your Screenshots

Make sure your screenshots show the ship, departure date, cabin type and total cabin price.

If you leave out the price column, ChatGPT may need to ask for more information or retrieve different fares that no longer match your original search.

You can also upload a PDF file.

Ask for Low and High Estimates

Cruise lines frequently discount drink packages, dining packages and internet access before sailing.

Rather than relying on a single figure, you can ask ChatGPT to provide a low and high estimate for additional expenses.

For my final comparison, I used the low end of the estimated advance-purchase pricing range.

Verify Everything Before You Pay

ChatGPT can be very useful for researching cruises, but it can also make mistakes.

During my comparison, I had to revisit some calculations and verify several assumptions about package inclusions and service charges.

Always confirm the ship, sailing date, ports of call, cabin category, total price and package charges directly with the cruise line or your travel agent.

Final Thoughts: CruisePlum and ChatGPT Work Well Together

I found CruisePlum particularly useful for the first stage of the search. Its detailed filters let me narrow dozens of possibilities to cruises that matched my travel dates, departure ports, cabin preferences and itinerary requirements.

ChatGPT was most useful for the next stage: organizing the results, researching the ships, identifying the ports of call and estimating the additional expenses needed to make the cruises more comparable.

The combination helped me evaluate cruises from several different companies without manually building a complicated spreadsheet.

It also helped me discover that Norwegian Aqua, despite not having the lowest advertised balcony price, was a competitive option once I included the services I wanted.

These two tools used together are extremely powerful, save time and can save you money.

Start with a precise CruisePlum search, use ChatGPT to build a more complete comparison, and verify the final numbers before booking.
