ORICO “Cruise Approved” Travel Power Strip – On Sale For $16.99 + Heads Up To Royal Caribbean Cruisers

ORICO Cruise Approved Travel Power Strip, 4FT Wrap-Around Extension Cord

ORICO Travel Power Strip: 4 Outlets, USB-C and a Cord That Wraps Up for Packing

Finding enough outlets while traveling can be surprisingly difficult. Hotel rooms and vacation rentals often have outlets in inconvenient locations, and sometimes the outlet you need is hidden behind a desk, nightstand or other furniture.

The ORICO Travel Power Strip combines four AC outlets, two USB-A ports and one USB-C port with a compact body and 4-foot extension cord. What makes this one particularly interesting for travel is how that cord stores: it wraps around the outside of the power strip instead of dangling loose in your luggage.

A Lot of Connections in a Small Package

The ORICO gives you seven places to connect devices from a single wall outlet:

  • 4 AC outlets
  • 2 USB-A ports
  • 1 USB-C port

The power strip measures approximately 4.33 x 2.5 x 1.6 inches, so you’re getting a useful amount of expansion without packing a full-size household power strip.

The built-in USB ports can handle phones and other everyday USB-powered gear while the four AC outlets remain available for laptop chargers, camera battery chargers and other devices that use their own power supplies.

The Wrapped 4-Foot Cord Is the Standout Feature

Extension cords are useful when traveling, but they’re not particularly pleasant to pack.

ORICO solves that problem in a simple way. The 4-foot cord wraps around the outside of the power strip for storage, keeping the cord contained instead of leaving another loose cable in your suitcase or electronics bag.

That 4-foot reach can also be genuinely useful once you arrive. If the nearest outlet is behind a hotel nightstand, underneath a desk or otherwise poorly positioned, you can put the charging station someplace more convenient.

The ORICO also uses a thin 45-degree flat plug, which can make it easier to reach outlets behind furniture while reducing interference with the other receptacle in a standard wall outlet.

Especially Useful in Hotels and Vacation Rentals

Hotels are probably one of the best use cases for this design.

You may have plenty of electrical outlets in a room, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re where you want them. A 4-foot cord lets you move your charging setup closer to the bed, desk or wherever you’ve decided to organize your electronics.

It’s also handy when two people are traveling together. Instead of spreading phones, watches, battery packs and chargers across several outlets around the room, the ORICO can create one centralized charging area.

When it’s time to leave, wrap the cord back around the unit and put the entire thing in your bag.

When “Cruise Approved” Just… Isn’t

You’ll see plenty of power strips and charging devices described as “cruise approved,” including the ORICO. Unfortunately, there really isn’t such a thing as universally cruise approved.

The ORICO does not include surge protection, which is important because surge-protected power strips are prohibited by many cruise lines. But simply removing surge protection does not mean a power strip meets every cruise line’s rules.

Royal Caribbean is a perfect example.

Royal Caribbean currently prohibits extension cords, power strips and devices that provide multiple AC outlets. The ORICO has both a 4-foot extension cord and four AC outlets, so despite the “cruise approved” language associated with the product, this is not an appropriate choice for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

We have a detailed look at what is and isn’t currently allowed here: Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

Better Options for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruisers

That doesn’t mean Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruisers are stuck using a single basic wall charger.

One option is the TESSAN 140W GaN Universal Travel Adapter. It provides one AC outlet, three USB-C ports and one USB-A port without an extension cord. Its configuration fits Royal Caribbean’s current guidance allowing a properly marked adapter with one AC outlet and up to four USB charging ports.

It’s also a substantially more capable USB charger than the ORICO, with up to 140W of total USB output. That makes it particularly interesting for travelers carrying USB-C laptops, tablets and other higher-powered devices.

Another option is the Ceptics CTU-9C European Travel Adapter. It takes advantage of the European outlet found in many cruise cabins while providing one AC outlet and USB charging without adding an extension cord or multiple AC receptacles.

For Royal Caribbean cruisers, these designs avoid the two big problems presented by the ORICO: multiple AC outlets and an extension cord. They can also be useful options to consider for Celebrity cruises, where electrical extension cords are prohibited.

Cruise-line policies can change and individual electrical devices remain subject to inspection, so always check the current prohibited-items policy for your specific cruise line before sailing.

For more on the outlets and charging options you may find onboard, see our guide to cruise ship outlets and charging options.

USB-C Without Packing Another Basic Charger

The integrated USB-C and USB-A ports can reduce the number of basic charging blocks you need to pack for smaller electronics.

For devices that require substantially more USB-C power, you can simply plug the device’s regular high-output charger into one of the four AC outlets.

That combination is more useful than expecting the power strip itself to replace every charger you own.

What About International Travel?

The ORICO can still be useful on an international trip, but remember that this particular power strip uses a North American plug and is designed for 125V power.

A plug adapter changes the physical plug connection. It does not convert voltage.

For international trips, make sure both the ORICO and anything connected to it are appropriate for the electrical system you’re using. In many cases, a universal travel adapter designed for worldwide use may be the more practical choice.

Bottom Line

The ORICO Travel Power Strip is most interesting for travelers who want several real AC outlets and the flexibility of an extension cord without stuffing a loose 4-foot cable into their luggage.

Four AC outlets and three USB ports provide plenty of connection options, but the wrap-around cord is what really separates this from a basic compact power strip.

For hotels, vacation rentals and other trips where outlets are limited or simply located in the wrong place, it’s a clever travel accessory.

Just don’t assume that “cruise approved” means approved for every cruise. If you’re sailing Royal Caribbean or Celebrity, one of the single-outlet charging options discussed above is a much better fit for their current rules.

More About Travel Routers:

Travel routers are generally small devices that allow you to create a small Wi-Fi network.

The problem with traditional Wi-Fi routers is that they don’t know how to handle “captive networks”. Captive networks are networks that require you to log in before you can access the internet. Many publicly available WiFi networks are considered captive networks. That includes most hotels and cruise ships.

Travel routers are (or at least should be) designed to handle captive networks. You basically log in to the router through a web browser and then log into the captive network using the router’s settings.

Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch: Simple Protection for Beach, Pool and Cruise Days, 2-Pack – $7.99, $4 each on Lightning Deals!

Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch, Waterproof Phone Case for iPhone 16 15 14 13 Pro Max, IPX8 Cellphone Dry Bag Beach Cruise Ship Essentials 2Pack-8.3"

Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch: Simple Protection for Beach, Pool and Cruise Days

The Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch is a simple travel accessory that makes a lot of sense if your trip involves water. Beach bags get wet. Pool chairs get splashed. Cruise excursions can involve boats, rain, waterfalls, snorkeling stops and wet towels. A waterproof phone pouch gives your phone an extra layer of protection while keeping it close.

This is a 2-pack of waterproof phone pouches with lanyards included. The Amazon listing describes these as IPX8 waterproof pouches with a touch-friendly clear window, double-lock seal and room for most phones up to 8.9 inches, even with many protective cases installed.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Why Pack a Waterproof Phone Pouch?

Phones go everywhere now, including places where water, sand and splashes are hard to avoid. A waterproof phone pouch lets you keep your phone with you instead of leaving it unattended on a beach chair or buried in a wet bag.

It can also hold a few small essentials like a cruise card, hotel key, cash or credit card. For beach days and excursions, that can be a lot more convenient than carrying a larger bag everywhere.

Key Features

  • 2-pack: Useful for couples, families or keeping one as a backup.
  • IPX8 waterproof rating: Designed to help protect against water exposure when properly sealed.
  • Universal fit: Listed as fitting most phones up to 8.9 inches.
  • Touch-friendly window: Allows basic phone use without removing the phone.
  • Clear front and back: Useful for photos and videos through the pouch.
  • Double-lock seal: Helps keep out water, sand, dust and dirt.
  • Lanyard included: Makes it easier to keep your phone with you.

Great for Cruises and Beach Trips

For cruising, this is especially useful on beach excursions, pool deck days, boat tours, resort day passes, private island stops and water-heavy port days. You can keep your phone, cruise card and a little cash close without constantly worrying about splashes or wet towels.

It is also useful beyond cruises: beach vacations, water parks, camping, hiking, boating, fishing, lake trips and rainy travel days are all good fits.

Photo and Touchscreen Notes

The pouch is designed so you can use your phone through the clear window, but there are some real-world limits. Fingerprint unlock may not work through the pouch, and touchscreens can be harder to use underwater or when the pouch is wet.

For photos around water, using your phone’s side buttons may be easier than relying on the touchscreen. It is also smart to set up your camera or unlock method before your hands are wet.

Test It Before You Trust It

Before putting your phone inside any waterproof pouch, test it first. Put a dry paper towel or tissue inside, seal the pouch and submerge it in water. If the paper stays dry, you have more confidence before using it with your phone.

  • Check the seal before each use.
  • Keep sand, sunscreen, hair and debris away from the sealing area.
  • Do not use it with sharp objects that could puncture the pouch.
  • Treat it as added protection, not permission to be careless with your phone.

Final Thoughts

The Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch is an easy packing-list addition for cruises, beach vacations, pool days and water excursions. It is small, inexpensive, easy to pack and useful in situations where your phone is more exposed than usual.

Bottom line: if your trip includes beaches, pools, boats, water parks or cruise excursions, a waterproof phone pouch is a smart item to pack.

Zipper Clips for Travel: Anti-Theft Deterrent and In-Transit Bag Security

Zipper Clips for Travel: Anti-Theft Deterrent and In-Transit Bag Security

Zipper Clips for Travel: Anti-Theft Deterrent and In-Transit Bag Security

Small travel accessories can make a big difference, especially when you are moving through crowded airports, train stations, cruise terminals, city streets and tourist areas. These zipper clips for travel are a simple way to make backpack, purse, crossbody bag and luggage zippers a little harder to open casually.

This is not the same thing as locking a bag in a true security sense. These clips are easy to remove or break if someone is determined. The value is in the extra step they add. Instead of a zipper that can be quickly pulled open, the zipper pulls are clipped together, making casual access more difficult and accidental opening less likely.

In This Post

Why Use Zipper Clips for Travel?

We recently went on a trip to Europe. That trip included time in London, a cruise to four Northern European countries and time in Paris. While preparing, we spent a lot of time thinking through ways to reduce the risk of pickpockets in crowded areas.

One tip we picked up while watching this video was to put locks on backpack, crossbody bag and purse zippers. I liked the idea of securing zippers, but needing a key every time I wanted to open a pocket on my backpack didn’t sound very appealing.

That led me to look for a middle-ground option. I wanted something that would make zippers harder to open quickly, without turning every bag access point into a locked compartment. These small double carabiner-style zipper clips are a good fit for that type of use.

Anti-Theft Deterrent for Backpacks, Purses and Crossbody Bags

The main idea behind these clips is deterrence. If two zipper pulls are clipped together, the pocket is not as easy to open with one quick motion. That can be helpful when walking through busy places where your attention may be divided.

Examples include:

  • Airport terminals
  • Train stations
  • Cruise terminals
  • Public transportation
  • Crowded tourist areas
  • Street markets
  • Museums and attractions
  • Busy city sidewalks

For a backpack, this can be especially useful on exterior compartments that are behind you while you are walking. For a purse or crossbody bag, it can help keep zipper pulls together so the compartment is less likely to be opened casually in a crowd.

These are not high-security locks. A determined thief could still get into a bag, cut fabric, break a clip or take the entire bag. The point is to make quick, casual, unnoticed access more difficult.

In-Transit Security for Luggage and Travel Bags

Beyond anti-theft deterrence, zipper clips can also help keep zippers closed while bags are being moved around.

I know a zipper working its way open and something falling out is unlikely, but I still get concerned when I have important items in zippered pockets. That is especially true with travel documents, small electronics, medication, cash, chargers and other easy-to-misplace items.

These clips can be useful on:

  • Backpack compartments
  • Carry-on bag exterior pockets
  • Personal item bags
  • Soft-sided luggage pockets
  • Packing cubes with dual zipper pulls
  • Toiletry bags
  • Electronics organizers

They can also be handy during cruise travel. Bags may be handled at the hotel, airport, cruise terminal and onboard the ship. For checked cruise bags, I still recommend using sturdy cruise luggage tag holders, but zipper clips can be another small layer for exterior pockets, organizer bags and carry-on compartments during the rest of your trip.

Zipper Clips vs Luggage Locks

A luggage lock is the better option when you actually want a lock. For checked luggage, a TSA-approved luggage lock is the more traditional choice if your goal is to lock the main compartment.

Zipper clips serve a different purpose. They are faster, lighter and more convenient for pockets you may need to access more often. You do not need a key or combination, and you are less likely to avoid using them because they are inconvenient.

That makes them a good option for day-to-day travel use, especially on bags you are actively carrying.

Where a Lock Makes More Sense

  • Checked luggage main compartments
  • Suitcases left in hotel storage
  • Bags where you want actual lockable access control
  • Situations where you do not need frequent access

Where Zipper Clips Make More Sense

  • Backpacks used during sightseeing
  • Crossbody bags and purses
  • Carry-on exterior pockets
  • Small organizer bags
  • Compartments you open repeatedly during travel

Best Uses for Zipper Clips

The best use for these clips is on bags with two zipper pulls that meet together. Clip the two pulls together and the pocket becomes harder to open quickly.

They are especially useful for:

  • Backpacks: Secure exterior pockets while walking through crowded areas.
  • Crossbody bags: Add a little extra deterrence to the main zipper compartment.
  • Purses: Keep paired zipper pulls together in airports, terminals and city centers.
  • Carry-on luggage: Help keep outside compartments from opening during travel.
  • Toiletry bags: Keep zippers closed inside a suitcase or cruise cabin bathroom bag.
  • Electronics pouches: Reduce the chance of chargers, adapters or cables spilling out.
  • Packing cubes: Clip zipper pulls together so cubes stay closed while being moved around.

They can also be used as simple zipper pull replacements, depending on the bag and zipper style.

Important Limitations

These clips are useful, but they should not be oversold. They are a convenience and deterrent accessory, not a true anti-theft system.

A few important limitations:

  • They can be removed or broken.
  • They do not prevent someone from taking the entire bag.
  • They do not stop someone from cutting soft luggage or bag fabric.
  • They are not a replacement for keeping valuables close and monitored.
  • They may not fit every zipper pull or bag design.

For travel, I would think of these as one layer in a larger strategy. Keep important items close, avoid putting wallets or passports in easy-access exterior pockets and stay especially aware in crowded areas. The clips simply make some zippers less convenient to open quickly.

Zpsolution Double Small Carabiner Clips

Zpsolution Double Small Carabiner Clips – Theft Deterrent – Holding Zipper Closed – Zipper Pull Replacement – affiliate link, note that multiple variations of this product may be available, as such a different version may appear at this link

These are small double-ended carabiner-style clips. One end can clip to one zipper pull and the other end can clip to the second zipper pull. That keeps the zipper pulls attached to each other and adds a small extra step before the compartment can be opened.

For travel, I like that they do not require a key, combination or cable. They are simple, lightweight and easy to use on bags where a lock would be annoying.

Practical Cruise Uses

For cruise travel, these can be useful before, during and after your sailing.

  • Embarkation day: Clip backpack or personal item zippers while moving through the terminal.
  • Excursions: Use them on day bags in busy ports, markets and sightseeing areas.
  • Air travel: Keep carry-on and personal item pockets more secure in airports.
  • Cabin organization: Use them on toiletry bags, electronics pouches or packing cubes.
  • Disembarkation: Help keep bag pockets closed while luggage is being moved and handled.

They are not something I would rely on as my only security measure, but they are a practical little travel accessory that can solve more than one problem.

Finding Other Options

These are the ones we landed on, but more options are available. Search Amazon for “security zipper clip” to shop around.

Alternate Use: Fix Broken Zipper Pull Tabs On the Go

Zpsolution double small carabiner clips used as zipper pull replacements for travel bags

These can also work as a quick fix for broken zipper tabs. If a zipper pull breaks during a trip, a small clip like this can give you something easier to grab until you can repair or replace the bag. That makes them useful not only as a zipper security accessory, but also as a small backup repair item for backpacks, packing cubes, toiletry bags and luggage pockets.

FAQ

Are zipper clips actually anti-theft?

They are better described as a theft deterrent. They make a zipper harder to open quickly, but they do not make a bag theft-proof.

Are these better than luggage locks?

They are better for convenience. Luggage locks are better when you want an actual lock. Zipper clips are useful on bags and pockets you access frequently.

Can I use these on checked luggage?

Yes! You can use them to help keep zipper pulls together, but they are not a substitute for a TSA-approved lock if your goal is locking checked luggage.

Will these fit every zipper?

Not necessarily. They work best with zipper pulls that have openings large enough for the clips to attach.

Are these good for backpacks?

Yes, backpacks are one of the best uses. They are especially helpful on exterior compartments that are harder for you to watch while wearing the bag.

Are these useful for cruise excursions?

Yes. They can be helpful on day bags, backpacks, purses and crossbody bags during port days, especially in crowded areas.

Can these be used as zipper pull replacements?

Depending on the bag and zipper design, yes. They can sometimes function as a small replacement pull or extension.

Final Thoughts

Zipper clips are a small, simple travel accessory that can add a useful extra layer of deterrence. They can help make backpack, purse and crossbody bag zippers harder to open casually, while also helping keep luggage, packing cubes and organizer bags closed in transit.

The bottom line is that these are cheap, super small and offer increased bag security without making it annoying to get into your own bag.

Danmu Beach Towel Clips: Handy Cruise Chair Clips for Towels & Swimwear – On Sale for $5… 63 Cents Each

Danmu Beach Towel Clips

Danmu Beach Towel Clips: Simple Cruise Chair Clips for Towels, Swimsuits and More

The Danmu Beach Towel Clips are a simple but useful cruise packing list item for keeping your towel in place on deck chairs, beach loungers, pool chairs and resort seating. If you have ever had a towel slide down a chair, blow away in the breeze or bunch up every time you move, a small set of towel clips can make pool and beach time easier.

These clips are also useful beyond the lounge chair. Pack them for cruises, beach vacations, resort stays, pool days and warm-weather trips where you may need to secure towels, hang damp swimsuits, clip hand-washed clothing or hold small items in place while they dry.

In This Post

Why Pack Danmu Beach Towel Clips?

Cruise packing is all about small items that solve annoying problems without taking up much room. Danmu Beach Towel Clips fit that category well. They are small, lightweight clips designed to help hold a towel in place on a chair, which can be especially helpful when you are on a breezy cruise deck, at the beach or by the pool.

Instead of constantly readjusting your towel, you can clip it to the top of the chair and relax. That makes these useful for sea days, pool decks, private islands, beach excursions, resort stays and hotel pools.

Why They Make Sense for Cruises

Cruise pool decks can be windy, crowded and full of identical-looking lounge chairs. A bright set of towel clips can help keep your towel secured and may also make your chair a little easier to spot when you come back from the pool, hot tub, bar or buffet.

They can also be useful in the cabin. If you rinse out swimsuits, socks, undergarments or lightweight clothing, clips can help hang damp items in the shower or bathroom area. That makes them a practical add-on for anyone trying to pack lighter, re-wear clothing or manage wet swimwear during a cruise.

Ways to Use Danmu Beach Towel Clips

  • Clip towels to lounge chairs on cruise decks, pool decks, beaches and resort chairs.
  • Help keep towels from blowing away on windy sea days or breezy beach stops.
  • Hang wet swimsuits after the pool, hot tub, beach or water excursion.
  • Clip hand-washed clothing while it dries in the cabin bathroom or shower area.
  • Secure a picnic tablecloth during beach days, camping trips or outdoor meals.
  • Hold open a book or small item while relaxing outside.

Packing Tips

Because towel clips are small and lightweight, they are easy to add to a cruise packing list. Store them in a beach bag, pool bag, packing cube or outer suitcase pocket so they are easy to find on embarkation day or your first sea day.

For cruises, consider keeping a few clips with your swimwear or beach-day gear. That way you can grab your towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, cruise card and clips together before heading to the pool deck or leaving for a beach excursion.

Who Should Pack These?

The Danmu Beach Towel Clips make the most sense for cruisers, beach travelers, resort guests, pool users and anyone who likes practical packing accessories. They are especially useful for families, frequent cruisers, beach-day planners and travelers who want a simple way to manage towels and wet swimwear.

They are not a must-have for every traveler, but they are one of those inexpensive cruise accessories that can be surprisingly handy once you start using them.

Final Thoughts

The Danmu Beach Towel Clips are a simple cruise packing accessory with multiple uses. They can help keep towels in place on lounge chairs, make pool and beach days more comfortable, and provide an easy way to hang damp swimsuits or hand-washed clothing in your cabin.

For a small item that takes up very little space, these are worth considering for cruises, beach vacations, resort stays and pool-focused trips.

In my opinion these (or towel bands) are a must have for any cruise or beach vacation. They don’t take up a lot of room and save a lot of frustration by keeping beach towels in place.

Magnetic Rechargeable Cruise Cabin Fan (No Outlet Needed!) – on sale for $21.59

Magnetic Cruise Ship Approved Fan, 5000mAh Battery Operated Portable Fan with 5 Speeds, Magnetically Sticks on Cabin Ceilings and Walls, Cruise Essentials 2026 - Black

Magnetic, Rechargeable Cruise Cabin Fan (No Outlet Required)

One of the fastest ways to make a cruise cabin feel more comfortable is adding a little air circulation — especially at night, after a sunny shore day, or if you like a gentle “white noise” breeze while you sleep. This GIIKNEW magnetic cruise fan is a smart pick because it’s designed for stateroom life: it mounts magnetically and it’s rechargeable, so you’re not burning one of your precious cabin outlets.

Why This Belongs on Your Cruise Packing List

✅ Magnetic mounting = hands-free airflow

The biggest advantage is the built-in magnetic base. Instead of taking up limited counter space, you can stick it to many common metal surfaces in a cabin, like:

  • the metal cabin ceiling/walls (where applicable)
  • bed frames and support rails
  • the cabin desk lamp base (if it’s metal)
  • the mini-fridge door (often metal)

That means you can aim airflow exactly where you want it — over the bed, toward the couch, or right at your “getting ready” spot without juggling clips, stands, or brackets.

🔋 Rechargeable = doesn’t steal an outlet

Cruise cabins are notorious for having too few outlets (and they’re rarely where you want them). Because this fan has a rechargeable battery, you can charge it during the day and then run it overnight without being tethered to a plug. That keeps your outlets available for the truly essential stuff: phone, camera, smartwatch, e-reader, or battery bank.

🌬️ Multiple speed settings for “just enough” breeze

Sometimes you want a light, quiet airflow. Other times you want stronger circulation after you come back from a hot port day. A multi-speed fan lets you dial it in, whether you’re sleeping, reading, or just trying to keep the room from feeling stuffy.

⏲️ Timer + light (great in a dark cabin)

Many cruise-friendly fans in this category include a timer (nice for falling asleep without running it all night) and an LED light that can double as a soft night light. That’s handy for late-night bathroom trips without blasting the bright cabin lights.

Best Ways to Use a Magnetic Fan in Your Stateroom

  • Over the bed: mount it above your pillow area for a gentle breeze while you sleep.
  • By the bunk ladder (family cabins): help move air toward upper bunks that can feel warmer.
  • At the “getting ready” station: aim airflow at the vanity/desk area while blow-drying or doing hair.
  • Post-shower humidity helper: point it toward the bathroom door area to help circulate air afterward.

Cruise Line Notes (Quick Reality Check)

Portable fans are generally allowed on most cruise lines, but policies can change and security has the final say. This fan is marketed as “cruise ship approved,” but it’s still smart to:

  • avoid anything with a heating element
  • pack it in an easy-to-access spot (so it’s simple to show during screening if asked)
  • check your cruise line’s current prohibited-items page before you sail

Bottom Line

If you like sleeping with a breeze, want better air circulation, or simply don’t want to fight over outlets in a stateroom, a magnetic rechargeable cruise fan is one of those “small item, big comfort” upgrades. The magnetic mount saves space, and the rechargeable battery means you can stay cool without sacrificing a precious plug.

Apple AirTags for Travel and Cruises: Track Your Luggage (Gen 2) 4-Pack – On Sale For $79.99, $20 Each

Photo from: Do AirTags Work on Cruise Ships?

Apple AirTags for Travel and Cruises: Track Your Luggage

AirTags have become one of our must-pack travel accessories. We use them on our travel backpacks, carry-ons and checked bags, and we wouldn’t want to go back to traveling without them.

Being able to open Apple’s Find My app and see where a bag was last detected adds some reassurance when you’re flying, transferring between destinations or handing luggage over at a cruise terminal. They won’t prevent luggage from getting lost, and they’re not true GPS trackers, but we’ve found them extremely useful throughout the travel process.

Why We Travel With AirTags

We use AirTags on our travel backpacks, carry-ons and checked bags and love them. It’s really nice to be able to check where a bag was last detected and get some reassurance that it made it onto the plane, arrived at the airport or made it onto the ship with you.

Checked luggage is probably where we appreciate them most. Once you hand over a suitcase at the airport, you normally have very little visibility into what’s happening to it until it appears at baggage claim. An AirTag gives you another source of information along the way.

They’re also useful on more complicated trips. A cruise vacation, for example, might involve a flight, hotel stay, ground transportation and finally the cruise itself. Your luggage can pass through several different sets of hands before you ever unpack it.

AirTags Are Particularly Useful for Cruise Travel

Cruises are one of the reasons we’ve become such big fans of traveling with AirTags.

For many people, the trip starts well before they reach the ship. You may check luggage for a flight, retrieve it at your destination, take it to a hotel and then hand it over again to porters at the cruise terminal.

We like being able to check our bags throughout that process.

One of the most useful times is embarkation day. Larger suitcases are typically handed over before you board and delivered to your cabin later. An AirTag can provide some extra reassurance while you’re waiting for your luggage to show up.

That said, AirTags behave a little differently once the ship leaves port.

Do AirTags Work on Cruise Ships?

Yes, but don’t expect perfect real-time tracking while you’re at sea.

We’ve used AirTags on cruises and consider them well worth packing. They’re especially useful while traveling to the ship and while luggage is making its way onboard.

Once the ship is underway, Find My locations may not update normally. We’ve actually seen our bags appear to be about 20 miles behind us in the middle of the ocean.

If that happens, don’t panic. Your suitcase is probably still sitting in your cabin.

The location shown in Find My can simply be older than the ship’s current position. As the ship continues moving, that old location can quickly end up miles behind you.

For much more about our experience using them onboard, see Do AirTags Work on Cruise Ships?.

Where We Use AirTags When Traveling

Checked suitcases may be the most obvious place to use an AirTag, but we use them with several types of travel bags.

Good candidates include:

  • Checked luggage
  • Carry-on bags
  • Travel backpacks
  • Camera bags
  • Laptop bags
  • Other valuable travel gear

We especially like having them in bags that may be separated from us at some point during a trip.

Where Should You Put an AirTag in Your Luggage?

We generally prefer putting an AirTag somewhere inside the bag rather than hanging it prominently on the outside.

An exterior holder can work, but luggage goes through a lot of handling. Keeping the tracker inside the suitcase or backpack helps protect it and makes it less likely that it will be accidentally knocked off.

You don’t need to leave the AirTag exposed for it to work.

A zippered interior pocket is an easy option. The goal is simply to put it somewhere secure where you’re unlikely to forget it.

1st Generation vs 2nd Generation AirTag

The current 2nd generation AirTag improves on the original, but the differences are secondary to the main reason we use AirTags for travel. Both generations work with Apple’s Find My network and both remain useful luggage trackers.

Feature 1st Generation AirTag 2nd Generation AirTag
Precision Finding Original Precision Finding range Up to 50% farther range with compatible devices
Bluetooth Original Bluetooth range Expanded Bluetooth range
Speaker Original speaker 50% louder
Battery Replaceable CR2032 Replaceable CR2032
Find My Network Yes Yes
Existing AirTag Accessories Yes Compatible with 2nd generation AirTag

If you already own 1st generation AirTags and they’re working well, we wouldn’t consider them obsolete. We’d continue using them for our luggage.

If you’re buying AirTags today, the newer 2nd generation adds improved nearby finding range and a louder speaker while keeping the same basic travel usefulness we liked about the originals.

Bottom Line

AirTags have become a must-pack travel accessory for us. We use them in our checked luggage, carry-ons and backpacks because being able to see where a bag was last detected gives us some extra reassurance throughout a trip.

We find them especially useful for cruises because cruise vacations often involve multiple stages of travel and multiple times when luggage is out of your hands. They’re helpful while flying to the cruise, after arriving at your destination and while waiting for checked luggage to make its way onto the ship.

For more about using AirTags specifically while cruising, see Do AirTags Work on Cruise Ships?.

Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank: Compact MagSafe Travel Charger – $23.39, Save 51% w/Stacking Deals!

Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank, 5,000mAh foldable magnetic wireless portable charger with stand and USB-C port

Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank: Compact MagSafe Travel Charger

Keeping your phone charged while traveling can be a challenge. Long sightseeing days, navigation, photos, mobile boarding passes, rideshare apps and general phone use can drain a battery much faster than a normal day at home.

The Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank is a compact 5,000mAh magnetic charger designed to attach directly to compatible iPhones. Instead of carrying a larger power bank and connecting a charging cable every time you need extra power, you can snap this onto the back of your phone and keep moving.

It also includes a foldable stand, making it especially handy around airports, hotels, cruise cabins and anywhere else you may want to prop up your phone while it charges.

Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank Highlights

  • 5,000mAh battery capacity
  • Magnetic wireless charging for compatible iPhones
  • Up to 7.5W wireless charging
  • USB-C input and output
  • Up to 12W USB-C output
  • Built-in foldable phone stand
  • Compact design measuring about 4.13 x 2.62 x 0.50 inches
  • Weighs approximately 5 ounces

Why a Magnetic Power Bank Works Well for Travel

The biggest advantage of this style of power bank is convenience.

With a traditional portable battery, you normally have the battery in one pocket, your phone in another and a cable running between them. That works, but it can be cumbersome when you’re walking around a city, navigating an airport or trying to quickly pull your phone out for a photo.

The Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank attaches directly to the back of a compatible iPhone. That gives you a relatively compact phone-and-battery combination without a charging cable hanging between the two.

For travel, I think this makes the most sense as a battery extender. Start the day with your phone charged and keep the Anker 622 available for the point when your battery starts getting low.

Check Current Price & Availability →

5,000mAh Is a Useful Travel Size

A 5,000mAh power bank strikes a nice balance between capacity and portability.

This is not designed to replace a much larger 10,000mAh or 20,000mAh battery if your goal is to recharge several devices or go for days without access to an outlet. Instead, its strength is that it is small enough to actually carry around throughout the day.

It is also worth remembering that the stated 5,000mAh capacity does not mean that all 5,000mAh will ultimately reach your phone. Some energy is lost during voltage conversion and charging, and wireless charging generally introduces additional losses.

Think of this primarily as extra power to help get your phone through a long travel day rather than a huge reserve battery.

The Built-In Stand Is More Useful Than It Might Seem

The back of the Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank folds out to create a phone stand.

That is a useful addition when you’re sitting at an airport gate, relaxing in a hotel room or spending some downtime in a cruise cabin. You can prop up your phone for videos, FaceTime calls or simply keeping the screen visible while the phone charges.

Because the USB-C port is located on the side of the power bank, the design also allows the battery to remain upright while connected to a charging cable.

You Can Also Charge by USB-C

While magnetic wireless charging is the main attraction, the USB-C connection is not limited to recharging the power bank.

Anker rates the USB-C output at up to 12W. If wireless charging is not practical or you simply want to connect a compatible device with a cable, that gives the Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank some additional versatility.

The wireless output is rated at up to 7.5W, so this should be viewed more as convenient wireless charging than a particularly fast magnetic charger.

Flying with the Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank

Power banks contain lithium-ion batteries, so there is an important packing rule to remember when flying.

The FAA requires power banks and portable chargers to be carried in carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage. If your carry-on bag ends up being gate checked, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the aircraft cabin.

You can review the current rules directly on the FAA PackSafe lithium battery page.

Airlines and international authorities can have additional restrictions, so it is also worth checking your airline’s current battery policy before traveling.

A Good Fit for Day Trips, Cruises and Sightseeing

Phones have become one of the most important travel tools we carry. They handle maps, tickets, reservations, photos, messaging, translation, payment apps and countless other tasks.

That makes running out of battery considerably more inconvenient when you’re away from home.

The Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank is particularly appealing if portability is more important to you than maximum battery capacity. Its magnetic design eliminates the cable during normal wireless charging, the 5,000mAh battery provides useful backup power and the foldable stand adds another practical feature without requiring a separate accessory.

For long sightseeing days, excursions, airports, road trips and cruises, it is the kind of compact backup power option that is easy to keep in a day bag or carry-on.

Bottom Line

The Anker 622 Magnetic Power Bank is an excellent travel accessory for MagSafe-compatible iPhones. It combines a useful 5,000mAh backup battery, magnetic wireless charging and a built-in stand in a compact package that is easy to carry throughout the day.

Its biggest strength is convenience. Snap it onto your iPhone when you need extra power and keep moving without dealing with a separate battery and charging cable. For sightseeing, flights, cruises, excursions and other long travel days, that makes it especially practical.

Thule Compression Packing Cube: Compact Organization for Travel – On Sale for $16.95, Save 29% (SEE UPDATE)

Thule Compression Packing Cube, Size Small, Semitransparent Fabric, Easy to Pack, YKK Zippers

Thule Compression Packing Cube: Compact Organization for Travel

Packing cubes make it easier to organize a suitcase, but a compression cube adds another useful feature: it can reduce the amount of space your clothes take up. The Thule Compression Packing Cube combines a compact packing organizer with a second zipper designed to compress the contents after the cube is packed.

This is the small Thule Compression Packing Cube, which is particularly well suited for smaller clothing items such as underwear, socks and T-shirts. It can work in checked luggage, carry-ons, backpacks and other travel bags.

About Thule

Thule

Thule has been making products for carrying, organizing and protecting gear for more than 75 years. The company was founded in Sweden in 1942 and today offers everything from roof racks and cargo carriers to luggage, backpacks and travel organizers.

I’m a big fan of Thule products. I recently landed on the Thule Construct 28L Backpack for travel, and it has reinforced my opinion of the brand. It looks great, is well thought out and feels very well built. The organization and overall design make sense for travel rather than feeling like features were added just to fill out a spec sheet.

How the Thule Compression Packing Cube Works

The basic idea is simple. Pack the cube like a traditional packing cube, close the main zipper and then use the compression zipper to reduce the cube’s overall depth.

Unlike vacuum compression bags, there is no pump or vacuum required. The zipper mechanically compresses the contents and helps remove some of the unused space between clothing.

That makes it useful for travelers who want some of the space-saving benefits of compression bags while retaining the organization and easy access of a packing cube.

Small Size Makes It Useful for Everyday Travel

The small size is one of the more practical aspects of this cube. According to Thule, its dimensions are approximately:

  • Expanded: 10.2 x 7.1 x 4.3 inches
  • Compressed: 10 x 7 x 1.25 inches
  • Weight: 0.18 lb

Instead of filling a large cube with several different types of clothing, a small cube can be dedicated to one category. Socks can go in one, underwear in another, or a day’s worth of clothing can be kept together.

Thule says most carry-on bags can accommodate four of its small cubes, or two small cubes along with one medium cube. Actual fit will depend on the dimensions and design of your luggage.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Semitransparent Fabric Helps You See What’s Inside

The Thule Compression Packing Cube uses semitransparent fabric. You can get an idea of what’s inside without completely exposing the contents.

That can be particularly handy when several packing cubes are inside the same suitcase. Instead of opening every cube to find a shirt or pair of socks, you may be able to identify the right one at a glance.

100D Ripstop Nylon and YKK Zippers

Thule uses 100D ripstop nylon for this packing cube. The material is water-repellent and bluesign approved.

It’s important to distinguish water-repellent from waterproof. This cube can provide some protection from incidental moisture, but it isn’t designed to function like a waterproof dry bag.

Thule also uses YKK zippers, an important detail on a compression cube because the compression zipper can be subjected to considerably more tension than the zipper on a basic packing organizer.

A webbing handle gives you an easy place to grab the cube when pulling it from a tightly packed suitcase and also provides a way to hang it when useful.

Compression Saves Space, Not Weight

One thing compression products cannot do is make your clothing weigh less.

Compressing several shirts into a smaller space may make it possible to fit more into a carry-on or checked suitcase, but everything you add still counts toward an airline’s baggage weight limit.

In fact, compression can make it surprisingly easy to create an overweight suitcase because bulky clothing no longer takes up as much room.

The biggest advantage is therefore better use of available luggage space, not reducing the weight of your packed bag.

A Good Middle Ground Between Packing Cubes and Compression Bags

Traditional packing cubes are excellent for organization but generally do little to reduce volume. Vacuum-style bags can provide more aggressive compression, but they are less convenient when you need frequent access to your clothing.

The Thule Compression Packing Cube sits between those two options.

You still get the organization and easy access of a zippered packing cube, while the additional compression zipper helps shrink bulky contents once everything is packed.

That combination can be especially useful for carry-on travel, longer trips, cruises and other situations where luggage space is limited.

Bottom Line

The Thule Compression Packing Cube is a compact travel organizer that adds genuine compression without requiring vacuum bags or other equipment. The small size works particularly well for socks, underwear, T-shirts and other smaller clothing, while the semitransparent ripstop nylon makes it easier to identify what you’ve packed.

The combination of a compression zipper, lightweight construction, YKK zippers and a grab handle makes this a more refined alternative to a basic packing cube.

Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage – $190 w/$40 Off Coupon

Samsonite Solyte DLX Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Midnight Black, Checked-Medium 25-Inch

Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage for Cruises & Travel

The Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage combines the flexibility of a softside suitcase with useful organization, exterior pockets and four-wheel maneuverability. Its medium checked size can be a practical option for cruises, longer vacations and other trips that require more packing room than a carry-on provides.

The expandable design provides some additional flexibility when needed, while the interior tie-down straps and storage pockets help keep clothing and smaller items organized. Because it is softside luggage, travelers also get exterior pockets that are not commonly found on hardside suitcases.

Samsonite Solyte DLX Features

  • Four multidirectional spinner wheels
  • Expandable softside design
  • Rugged polyester weave exterior
  • Spacious exterior storage pockets
  • WetPak pocket for damp or potentially messy items
  • Zippered interior mesh pocket
  • Smart Fix buckles that help keep tie-down straps out of the way while packing
  • Integrated privacy ID tag
  • 10-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship

Check Current Price & Availability →

Size and Weight

Samsonite provides separate packing and overall measurements:

  • Packing dimensions: 25.25″ x 18″ x 9.5″
  • Overall dimensions: 28.5″ x 19″ x 11.5″
  • Weight: 8.9 pounds

Overall dimensions include components such as the wheels and handles. The three listed overall measurements total 59 linear inches, placing the suitcase below the commonly used 62-linear-inch limit for standard checked luggage.

Expansion, overpacking and individual airline policies can affect whether a bag qualifies as standard checked luggage, so always confirm the requirements for each airline included in your trip.

At 8.9 pounds empty, the suitcase leaves approximately 41 pounds available for clothing and other contents when working with a 50-pound checked-bag limit. Weigh the completed suitcase before leaving home rather than relying on its empty weight or advertised capacity.

Useful Organization for Cruise Travel

The WetPak pocket is a particularly useful addition for cruise vacations. It provides a separate place for a damp swimsuit, wet water shoes or other items you would rather not place directly against clean clothing.

Exterior pockets can be handy for flat, nonvaluable items that may need to remain accessible during a trip. Passports, money, medications, identification, electronics and other essentials should remain securely with you rather than inside checked luggage.

The Smart Fix buckles are another thoughtful feature. They are designed to keep the interior tie-down straps out of the way while the suitcase is being packed, reducing the need to repeatedly move straps from underneath clothing.

Softside Flexibility with a Trade-Off

Softside luggage provides flexible packing space and convenient exterior pockets, but it does not offer the rigid exterior protection of a hardside suitcase. Travelers carrying fragile items may prefer a hard shell or should pack those items carefully inside the center of the bag.

The nearly nine-pound empty weight is also worth considering for travelers who routinely approach airline weight limits. The best way to avoid overweight baggage fees is to weigh the packed suitcase before heading to the airport or cruise terminal.

Check the Selected Size and Color

The Samsonite Solyte DLX collection may be available in multiple sizes, colors and luggage sets. Confirm that the selected option is the 25-inch checked suitcase before ordering, as dimensions, weight and included features may vary between configurations.

Is the Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch a Good Choice?

The Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage is a strong option for travelers who prefer softside flexibility, exterior storage and an organized interior. Its spinner wheels should make it easier to maneuver through airports, cruise terminals and hotels, while the WetPak pocket adds a genuinely useful feature for beach and cruise vacations.

Travelers primarily concerned with rigid protection or the lowest possible empty weight may prefer a different style. For those who want an expandable medium checked suitcase with accessible pockets and practical organization, the Solyte DLX is well worth considering.

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella: Compact Umbrella with Lifetime Warranty – $22.77 on Lightning Deals (Save 43%!)

Repel Umbrella Windproof Travel Umbrellas for Rain - Easy Auto Open Close, Durable & Compact Umbrella, Strong Fiberglass Frame, Waterproof Canopy - Backpack, Purse, Portable Umbrella for Travel

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella: Compact Cruise Umbrella with Lifetime Warranty

Rain can show up quickly on a cruise vacation, especially during port days when you may be spending hours walking, sightseeing or taking a shore excursion. A compact umbrella gives you some protection without taking up much room in your daypack or luggage.

The Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella combines a folding travel-friendly design with automatic open and close operation, reinforced construction, a full-size canopy and a lifetime replacement warranty. That combination makes it a particularly appealing option for travelers who want an umbrella they can pack trip after trip.

Why It Makes Sense for Cruise Travel

The Repel folds to about 11 inches long and weighs roughly 14.4 ounces, making it relatively easy to carry in a backpack, tote or other shore excursion bag.

That can be especially useful on cruises where weather may change throughout the day. Rather than carrying a full-size umbrella or getting caught without rain protection, you can keep a compact one tucked away in your day bag until you need it.

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella Features

  • Lifetime replacement warranty: Repel advertises lifetime replacement coverage for its umbrellas, subject to the company’s current warranty terms.
  • Compact folding design: Approximately 11 inches long when folded for easier packing and carrying.
  • 42-inch canopy: Provides substantial coverage while maintaining a compact packed size.
  • Automatic open and close: Push-button operation makes it easier to deploy and collapse the umbrella.
  • Reinforced construction: Nine flexible fiberglass ribs are designed to provide additional resistance to wind.

Check Current Price & Availability →

The Lifetime Warranty Is a Big Plus

Travel umbrellas can have a tough life. They get stuffed into backpacks and luggage, carried through airports and cruise ports, and occasionally have to deal with weather that is less than umbrella-friendly.

That’s one reason the Repel lifetime replacement warranty stands out. Instead of viewing a compact umbrella as essentially disposable if something goes wrong, Repel offers long-term replacement coverage subject to its current warranty terms.

For travelers who plan to keep an umbrella packed and ready for multiple vacations, that added support is a meaningful advantage and helps distinguish the Repel from inexpensive compact umbrellas with little or no long-term coverage.

A Useful Shore Excursion Backup

A travel umbrella can be particularly useful when you’re leaving the ship for several hours and don’t want to rely entirely on the forecast. It can stay tucked in your shore excursion backpack until needed, whether you’re exploring a port independently, joining a walking tour or waiting for transportation in the rain.

Its compact size also makes the Repel easier to justify packing even when rain isn’t a major part of the forecast. At under a pound, it’s a relatively small addition compared with dealing with an unexpected downpour far from the ship.

Bottom Line

The Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella offers a strong combination of compact packed size, useful canopy coverage, reinforced construction and automatic operation for travelers who want to be prepared for rainy port days.

The lifetime replacement warranty may be its most compelling feature. For a travel accessory that can get knocked around in luggage and put to the test in bad weather, that long-term coverage makes the Repel especially attractive as a cruise and travel umbrella.

Waterproof Document Bag for Passports and Important Travel Papers – Limited Time Deal!

IPX8 Waterproof Document Bag: 15.3x11.8" Zipper Pouch Submersible 1M / 30 Min for Boating – Keep Legal Docs, Valuables Bone-Dry in Rain or Spills

Waterproof Document Bag for Passports and Important Travel Papers

Travel documents are among the few things on a trip that can be difficult—or impossible—to replace quickly. The TUNROP waterproof document bag provides a simple way to give passports, boarding documents, reservation confirmations and other important papers an added layer of protection from rain, spills and accidental exposure to water.

Unlike a small passport sleeve, this pouch measures approximately 15.3 by 11.8 inches. That provides room for full-size documents without folding them while also accommodating several travelers’ passports and other small valuables in one place.

Added Water Protection for Essential Travel Documents

Even when a suitcase or backpack is described as water resistant, moisture can still enter through zippers, seams and openings. A bottle can also leak inside a bag, or luggage can be left exposed during a downpour. Placing important papers inside a separate waterproof document bag creates another barrier between those items and a wet travel bag.

The manufacturer describes this TUNROP pouch as IPX8 rated and designed to withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for at least 30 minutes when properly closed. Its sealed seams and waterproof zipper make it suitable for situations ranging from ordinary travel spills and rainy transfers to boating and other trips where exposure to water is more likely.

Check Current Price & Availability →

What Can You Carry in the TUNROP Waterproof Document Bag?

The larger format makes this bag useful for keeping a trip’s essential documents together. Possible contents include:

  • Passports and passport cards
  • Printed boarding passes and cruise documents
  • Travel insurance paperwork
  • Hotel, tour and transportation confirmations
  • Copies of identification and emergency contact information
  • Cash, credit cards and other small valuables
  • A phone or other compact electronics when temporary water protection is needed

At a listed weight of about 7 ounces, the pouch adds relatively little to a carry-on or personal item. Its flat shape should also make it easy to place alongside a laptop sleeve, packing folder or the inside wall of a suitcase.

Pay Attention to the Waterproof Zipper

The waterproof zipper is intentionally firmer than a standard zipper. According to the product instructions, it must be pulled completely to the end and fully seated to create the waterproof seal. A final gentle tug can help confirm that it is completely closed.

That step matters. A waterproof pouch is only as effective as its closure, so it is worth checking the zipper every time important documents are placed inside. Travelers should also inspect the bag and seams for damage before relying on it around water.

A Useful Addition to a Carry-On or Personal Item

A waterproof document bag is particularly useful for cruises, beach vacations, boating trips, camping, rainy destinations and any itinerary involving frequent transfers between airports, hotels and vehicles. It can also serve as a central location for a family’s documents, reducing the chance that a passport or confirmation page gets misplaced among multiple bags.

For security and accessibility, passports and other irreplaceable documents should remain in a carry-on or personal item rather than checked luggage. This pouch adds water protection, but it does not replace sensible document security: keep it under your control while traveling and use the hotel or cruise-cabin safe when appropriate.

About the TUNROP Waterproof Document Bag

  • Size: Approximately 15.3 by 11.8 inches
  • Weight: Approximately 7 ounces
  • Water protection: Manufacturer-rated IPX8; claimed submersion protection at 1 meter for at least 30 minutes when properly sealed
  • Construction: Sealed seams, waterproof zipper and tear-resistant fabric
  • Interior: Fiberglass-free lining
  • Color: Black

Bottom Line

The TUNROP waterproof document bag offers a straightforward way to organize passports and important travel papers while providing meaningful protection against rain, spills and other encounters with water. Its full-document size is the standout feature: instead of folding itineraries, insurance information or reservation paperwork into a small passport wallet, travelers can keep everything together in a lightweight, sealed pouch.

Buffway Slim RFID Wallet: From Travel Wallet to Everyday Wallet – On Sale for $15.99

Buffway Slim Minimalist Front Pocket RFID Blocking Leather Wallets for Men and Women - Cross Black

Buffway Slim RFID Wallet: From Travel Wallet to Everyday Wallet

Before a recent international trip, I decided to downsize my everyday wallet. I wanted something smaller, easier to keep inside zippered pockets and less noticeable than a traditional bulky wallet while traveling.

Buffway wallet purchase date

I purchased this exact Buffway Slim RFID Wallet for that trip, and it worked extremely well.

I liked it so much that I never switched back. What started as a travel purchase became my everyday wallet, and I’m still using it today.

Why I Wanted a Smaller Wallet for Travel

A bulky everyday wallet can be unnecessary when you’re traveling. You probably don’t need every credit card, membership card, receipt and miscellaneous item you normally carry at home.

My goal was simple: carry less and use a wallet small enough to fit comfortably inside secure, zippered pockets.

The Buffway worked very well for that.

Its slim profile makes it easier to keep tucked away instead of creating the noticeable bulge of a conventional wallet. That’s useful in airports, train stations, crowded attractions, cruise ports, city streets and other places where I prefer to keep valuables secured and relatively unobtrusive.

On my Europe trip, this was especially useful when I was spending time in crowded areas and using public transportation. I discuss some of the same approach to securing valuables in my European Cruise Packing List.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Small Enough for Zippered Pockets

One of the biggest advantages of this wallet is simply its size.

The Buffway measures approximately 3 1/8 inches by 4 7/16 inches. Instead of carrying a traditional bifold stuffed with things you may not need, it provides a compact place for the essentials.

Its small size makes it easier to carry in:

  • Zippered pants pockets
  • Interior jacket pockets
  • Small crossbody bags
  • Travel purses
  • Other secure interior compartments

For me, fitting comfortably inside a zippered pocket was one of the main reasons for buying it. That remains one of my favorite things about the wallet.

It Became My Everyday Wallet

I originally bought the Buffway Slim RFID Wallet specifically for travel.

The plan was to use a smaller wallet for the trip and then go back to my normal wallet when I got home.

That never happened.

I liked carrying a smaller wallet so much that I continued using it after the trip, and it remains my everyday wallet today.

That’s probably the strongest endorsement I can give it. This wasn’t something I bought for one vacation and then tossed into a drawer with the rest of my travel gear. Downsizing turned out to work better for me both on the road and at home.

Buffway Slim RFID Wallet Features

The Buffway is a minimalist front-pocket-style wallet rather than a traditional bulky bifold.

  • Compact size: Approximately 3 1/8 inches by 4 7/16 inches
  • Eight slots: Space for identification, credit cards, debit cards and other essentials
  • RFID blocking: Designed to block RFID communication from compatible cards while they’re stored in the wallet
  • Slim profile: Easy to carry in smaller and zippered pockets
  • Minimalist layout: Encourages you to carry the cards you actually need instead of everything in your everyday wallet

Eight slots have been plenty for the way I use it. There’s enough room for the important cards without turning it back into an oversized wallet.

Carry Less When You Travel

One of the side benefits of switching to a slim wallet is that it encourages you to think about what you really need to carry.

Depending on the trip and what you’re doing that day, that might mean the identification you need, a primary payment card, a backup card and some cash.

There’s usually little reason to travel around with every card that’s normally in your wallet.

It’s also worth considering whether all of your payment methods need to be kept in the same place. Keeping a backup card somewhere else secure can give you another option if your main wallet is lost or stolen.

A smaller wallet doesn’t create that strategy on its own, but it fits very well with a lighter and more deliberate approach to carrying valuables while traveling.

Related: Using Wise for Travel: Convert Currency, Spend Abroad & Protect Your Everyday Card

RFID Blocking Is a Nice Extra

The Buffway includes RFID-blocking material designed to prevent compatible contactless cards from communicating wirelessly while they’re stored inside the wallet.

That’s a nice feature, but it wasn’t the primary reason I bought it.

For me, the more meaningful advantages are the compact size, reduced bulk and ability to keep the wallet securely inside a zippered pocket. Those are benefits I use both while traveling and every day.

Bottom Line

I bought the Buffway Slim RFID Wallet because I wanted to downsize for travel and have something that would fit comfortably inside zippered pockets.

It worked exactly the way I hoped it would.

More importantly, I liked the smaller format enough that I never went back to my old wallet. It started as a travel purchase and became something I now use every day.

If you’re looking for a compact wallet for travel—or simply want to carry less in general—the Buffway Slim RFID Wallet is well worth a look.

Eastpak Tranverz S 42L Carry-On: Two-Compartment Rolling Bag – On Sale for $85 w/Coupon, Save 47%!

Eastpak Tranverz S – 42L Large Wheeled Luggage with Dual Compartments, TSA Lock, Compression Straps & Smooth-Wheeling System, Black

Eastpak Tranverz S 42L Carry-On: Two-Compartment Rolling Bag

A good carry-on should make it easier to pack, stay organized and move through a trip without adding unnecessary bulk. The Eastpak Tranverz S is a 42-liter soft-sided carry-on with two main packing compartments, compression straps, a front pocket, two wheels and a built-in TSA combination lock.

Its combination of capacity, organization and flexible construction makes it a practical option for air travel, road trips, train travel, cruises and other trips where you want to keep your luggage compact without giving up useful packing space.

Eastpak Tranverz S Features

The Eastpak Tranverz S offers a relatively large 42-liter capacity in a compact carry-on format.

Key features include:

  • 42-liter capacity
  • Two main packing compartments
  • Zip-fastening front pocket
  • Internal and external compression straps
  • Two-wheel rolling design
  • Telescopic handle
  • Built-in TSA three-digit combination lock
  • Water-resistant fabric
  • Approximately 5.3 lb empty weight

Two Main Compartments Help Keep Things Organized

One of the more useful features of the Tranverz S is its split-compartment design.

Instead of one large open packing area, the bag gives you two main sections that can be used to separate clothing, shoes, toiletries, packing cubes and other travel gear. That can make it easier to stay organized throughout a trip and can also help keep clean and worn clothing separated.

For travelers who prefer more structure inside their luggage, the two-compartment layout is a meaningful advantage.

Compression Straps Help Make Better Use of the Space

The Tranverz S includes both internal and external compression straps.

The internal straps help keep packed items from shifting around, while the external compression straps can help control the overall size of the bag when it is fully packed.

That can be especially useful on longer trips when you are trying to make the most of a carry-on without stepping up to a larger checked suitcase.

Flexible Soft-Sided Construction

The soft-sided design gives the Tranverz S some flexibility that a rigid hard-shell suitcase does not have.

That can make it easier to fit into luggage racks, car trunks, closets and other tight storage areas. It also allows the compression straps to pull the bag in when it is not packed completely full.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Easy Access Front Pocket

The front zippered pocket gives you a convenient place to keep smaller items that you may want to reach without opening the main packing compartments.

That can be useful for travel documents, charging cables, headphones and other frequently used accessories.

Two-Wheel Rolling Design

The Eastpak Tranverz S uses two wheels rather than a four-wheel spinner system.

Four-wheel luggage is easy to maneuver on smooth airport floors, while two-wheel luggage can work well across sidewalks, uneven pavement and other surfaces encountered during travel.

Which style is better largely comes down to personal preference and how you normally travel.

Carry-On Size: Check Your Airline

The Tranverz S is listed at approximately:

  • Height: 51 cm / about 20.1 inches
  • Width: 32.5 cm / about 12.8 inches
  • Depth: 23 cm / about 9.1 inches
  • Capacity: 42 liters
  • Weight: approximately 5.3 lb

Those dimensions may work as carry-on luggage with many airlines, but carry-on limits vary by airline, route and fare class.

This is especially worth checking when flying international or low-cost carriers, which may have tighter cabin baggage limits. The approximately 9.1-inch depth is one dimension to compare carefully with your airline’s current requirements.

Always verify your airline’s current carry-on rules before traveling.

Eastpak Tranverz S: Bottom Line

The Eastpak Tranverz S 42L Carry-On offers a useful combination of packing space, organization and flexibility.

The two-compartment layout is a standout feature, while the compression straps, front pocket and 42-liter capacity make it well suited to travelers who want to get a lot out of a carry-on-sized bag.

If you prefer soft-sided luggage and like the simplicity of a traditional two-wheel design, the Tranverz S is a versatile option for a wide range of trips.

Travel Corkscrew for Cruises: Bladeless, Compact & TSA-Friendly

If you like bringing a bottle of wine on a cruise, there’s one small item that’s easy to overlook: how are you going to open it?

Many cruise lines allow guests to bring a limited amount of wine or Champagne on board. Wine glasses are usually easy to come by—ask your room steward or a bartender. Opening the bottle can be a different story.

We’ve had mixed experiences asking bartenders to open bottles we’ve brought on board. Sometimes they’ve opened one without charging us and other times they’ve wanted to charge a corkage fee. If you plan to enjoy your wine in your cabin, bringing your own corkscrew is an easy solution.

Check Current Price & Availability →

This not only can save money, it can save time. Instead of tracking down a bartender or waiting for someone to open your bottle, you can simply open it yourself whenever you’re ready.

But there’s another consideration if you’re flying to your cruise: many traditional waiter’s corkscrews include a small knife for cutting the foil.

In This Post

True Jetsetter TSA-Compliant Corkscrew

The True Jetsetter TSA-Compliant Corkscrew is designed specifically with travel in mind.

Instead of the small folding knife found on many traditional waiter’s corkscrews, the Jetsetter uses foil-cutting wheels. You still get the familiar double-hinged waiter’s corkscrew design, but without the knife blade.

That’s a particularly nice combination for cruise travelers who may also be flying before or after their cruise.

  • Bladeless design
  • Foil-cutting wheels instead of a knife
  • Double-hinged design for leverage when removing corks
  • Compact size that’s easy to add to a travel kit
  • Built-in bottle opener

Check Current Price & Availability →

Why Bladeless Matters When You’re Flying

According to current TSA guidance, corkscrews without a blade are permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage. Corkscrews that incorporate a knife or blade are a different matter.

The True Jetsetter handles foil with cutting wheels rather than the small knife blade found on many waiter’s corkscrews. If you’re specifically buying a corkscrew for travel, that’s a much more practical design.

As always, security personnel have the final say at the checkpoint, and rules outside the United States may be different.

Cruise Line Wine & Corkage Policies

Whether bringing your own corkscrew saves you a corkage fee depends on the cruise line and where you plan to drink your wine. Some lines charge only when your bottle is served in a restaurant, bar or other public area. Others assess corkage even if you drink the wine in your cabin.

Here’s a quick look at policies from several major cruise lines. Policies and fees can change, so use the links in the last column to check the cruise line’s current rules before sailing.

Cruise Line Wine Allowance Corkage Important Notes Check Current Policy

Why This Makes Sense for Cruise Travel

A corkscrew certainly isn’t the most important thing you’ll pack for a cruise, but if you’re bringing wine, it’s one of those little things that can make your trip easier.

The True Jetsetter TSA-Compliant Corkscrew makes even more sense because it’s designed around travel rather than simply being a smaller version of a kitchen corkscrew.

Pack the wine according to your cruise line’s current rules, grab glasses once you’re on board and, if you’re planning to enjoy the bottle in your cabin, you’ll already have a way to open it.

Top Magnets Heavy Duty Magnetic Hooks for Cruise Cabins: These Are Monsters!

Top Magnets Heavy Duty Magnetic Hooks for Cruise Cabins:

Top Magnets Heavy Duty Magnetic Hooks for Cruise Cabins: These Are Monsters

Heavy duty magnetic hooks for cruise cabins can be one of the simplest ways to make a small cabin feel more organized. Cruise cabin walls, doors and even ceilings are often made with metal surfaces, which means magnetic hooks can give you extra hanging spots without tape, suction cups or permanent hardware.

There are a few small items that can really help organize your cabin for a more enjoyable vacation, and magnetic hooks are near the top of that list. Use them for hats, lanyards, lightweight bags, wet swimsuits, toiletry bags, decorations and other small travel items that otherwise end up piled on counters, chairs or the floor.

For lots more about what you should pack for your next cruise, check out our complete cruise packing list.

These Are Monsters!

Compared to the average hook magnets that we have seen people use for cruising, these are monsters. That includes the magnetic hooks we have been using. These are chunky, but still small enough to pack easily.

The big difference is that, unlike a lot of smaller magnetic hooks on the market, these actually hold something. The product listing rates these at up to 150 lbs in vertical suspension and up to 50 lbs in horizontal suspension, but that is an ideal rating. Real-world holding power depends on the surface, thickness and direction of pull.

For cruise cabin use, that means they can be especially useful on ceilings or strong metal surfaces, while wall use may hold less because the hook is being pulled sideways. Either way, these are much more substantial than many of the tiny cruise magnet packs people buy.

Learn More: Hands on Review: Top Magnets Heavy Duty Magnetic Hooks… These actually hold something!

Ways to Use Magnetic Hooks in a Cruise Cabin

  • Hang hats, lanyards and cruise cards near the door
  • Keep small bags, purses or lightweight backpacks off the floor
  • Hang wet swimsuits or coverups in a better spot to dry
  • Add extra hooks in the bathroom area for toiletry bags or travel towels
  • Use ceiling placement for items that need a stronger straight-down hold
  • Keep jackets, hoodies or beach bags easier to grab
  • Hang lightweight decorations without using tape

A Note About Cruise Cabin Walls and Magnet Strength

Magnetic hooks can be great in cruise cabins, but holding strength is not the same in every spot. A magnet may hold very strongly on one wall or ceiling panel and much less strongly on another. Painted surfaces, thinner metal, textured surfaces and sideways pull can all reduce holding power.

For best results, test the hook before loading it up. Start with lighter items and use the ceiling when you need the strongest hold. These hooks are strong, but you should still use common sense and avoid hanging anything fragile, messy or too heavy over beds, heads or breakable items.

What Are Others Saying?

Search this product’s Amazon reviews for “cruise” to see what other cruisers are saying. As with many Amazon listings, reviews may include other sizes, colors or variations of the same product.

Bottom Line

These heavy duty magnetic hooks are a small cruise cabin organization upgrade that can make a noticeable difference. They are bulkier than the tiny magnetic hooks many cruisers pack, but that is also the point. If you want magnetic hooks that feel more substantial and can handle more useful cabin organizing tasks, these are worth a look.

They are not magic, and every cabin surface is different, but based on our hands-on experience, these are the kind of magnetic hooks we would choose when we actually want to hang something more than a lanyard.

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for Cruises: 5-Port Type C Charger (Use the 220 Outlet on Your Next Cruise) – On Sale for… $8.99

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for CruisesPicture from my Hands on Review of this great charging block

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for Cruises: 5-Port Type C Charger

Cruise cabins can have a frustrating shortage of convenient power outlets. One of my favorite ways to add useful charging capacity is to take advantage of the European Type C outlet found in many cruise ship cabins.

The LiFiYiRc European USB Charger plugs directly into that outlet and gives you five USB charging ports without adding another AC outlet.

European USB charger for cruises

I’ve personally used and tested this exact charger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. It worked well for turning the cabin’s European outlet into a convenient charging station for several devices.

For photos and more detailed testing, see my hands-on review of the LiFiYiRc European USB charger.

Five USB Charging Ports

The LiFiYiRc charger combines USB-C and USB-A charging in one compact device:

  • 2 USB-C ports
  • 3 USB-A ports
  • PD fast-charging support
  • QC 3.0 fast-charging support
  • European Type C plug
  • 100-240V AC input

The charger I tested is labeled as a 65W Fast Charger. Individual ports are marked PD20W, QC3.0, PD15W, 3.1A and 3.1A.

Why I Like Type C USB Chargers for Cruises

Many cruise cabins include a European-style outlet that American travelers may otherwise leave completely unused.

A Type C USB charger turns that outlet into another dedicated charging location for phones, watches, tablets, headphones, power banks and other USB-powered travel gear.

That’s especially useful when several people are sharing a cabin or when you travel with a growing collection of rechargeable devices.

For more on this strategy, see my guide to making use of the 220V European outlet on a cruise ship.

I Used It on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas

I brought this exact LiFiYiRc charger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas and plugged it directly into the European-style cabin outlet.

It worked exactly as I’d hoped. I was able to connect several charging cables and charge multiple devices from an outlet that I otherwise might not have used.

I even used it to provide power to my Dell XPS laptop. My laptop normally uses a 130W charger, so charging was slower and this isn’t a replacement for its full-power factory charger. Still, it was able to provide power in a pinch.

That’s a useful example of how I view this charger: it’s a very handy multi-device USB charger, but you shouldn’t assume it can replace a high-wattage dedicated laptop charger.

You can see the charger plugged in, loaded with cables and tested onboard in my full LiFiYiRc hands-on review.

USB-C and USB-A in the Same Charger

Another reason I like this configuration is that it includes both newer USB-C ports and traditional USB-A ports.

Most of us are gradually moving toward USB-C, but plenty of travel accessories still use USB-A charging cables.

With two USB-C and three USB-A ports, this charger works well with a mix of newer and older charging cables without requiring multiple charging blocks.

A Good Option for Royal Caribbean’s Current Outlet Rules

Royal Caribbean’s electrical-device rules are important when choosing a cruise charger. Multi-plug AC adapters and devices that add additional electrical outlets can be prohibited.

This LiFiYiRc charger is different because it does not provide an additional AC outlet. It plugs into the European Type C outlet and provides USB charging ports only.

That’s one reason I like this style of charger for Royal Caribbean cruises.

For the latest policy details and examples of chargers and adapters that may or may not qualify, see my guide to Royal Caribbean’s multi-plug adapter rules.

Cruise-line policies can change, and final approval of any electrical device is up to the cruise line and onboard security.

Using a 220V Cruise Cabin Outlet

One potential point of confusion when using a European cruise cabin outlet is voltage.

When you use a simple plug adapter to connect an AC-powered US device to a 220/240V outlet, you need to make sure the device itself supports that voltage.

The LiFiYiRc charger I tested is labeled for 100-240V AC input. Your phone, watch or other USB device connects to the charger’s USB output rather than directly to the ship’s AC power.

That makes a USB charger like this a simple way to put the European outlet to work.

For conventional plug adapters and AC-powered devices, always verify voltage compatibility before connecting anything to a 220/240V outlet.

Bottom Line

The LiFiYiRc European USB Charger is a simple way to get more usefulness out of the European outlet in a cruise cabin.

It provides two USB-C ports and three USB-A ports, doesn’t add another AC outlet and has worked well for me during actual onboard use.

If the European outlet in your cabin would otherwise go unused, a charger like this can turn it into a very useful multi-device charging location.

For onboard photos, additional testing and more observations from my experience using it, see the complete hands-on LiFiYiRc USB charger review.

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets + 3 USB Ports – $8.98 on Lightning Deals! – Use the 220 Outlet On Your Next Cruise

European Travel Plug Adapter, US to Europe Plug Adapter, International Itly Travel Plug Adapter with 2 Outlets 3 USB Ports(2 USB C), Type C Power Adapter to Italy Spain France Portugal Iceland Germany

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets + 3 USB Ports

When you’re traveling internationally, a simple plug adapter can do more than just make your American plug fit a European outlet. The right adapter can also give you additional places to charge the phones, watches, cameras, power banks and other electronics that tend to travel with us.

That can be especially useful on a cruise. Many cruise cabins have a European-style outlet in addition to the standard North American outlet. With the right adapter, that otherwise-unused outlet can become another valuable charging location.

The HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter turns one compatible European outlet into two standard North American-style AC outlets along with three USB charging ports.

It is also compact and weighs about 2.4 ounces, making it an easy addition to a travel electronics bag without taking up much luggage space.

5 Charging Connections in One Small Adapter

The HANYCONY adapter provides five places to connect devices:

  • 2 standard North American AC outlets
  • 2 USB-C ports
  • 1 USB-A port

That combination is particularly useful if you’re traveling with a mix of older and newer electronics. You can connect conventional chargers to the AC outlets while plugging USB cables directly into the adapter.

The USB ports provide up to 15.5 watts total, making them useful for everyday devices such as phones, watches, earbuds and other smaller electronics.

This isn’t a high-powered USB-C laptop charger, however. If you need fast USB-C charging for a laptop or another higher-powered device, you’ll probably still want to bring the appropriate charger.

Made for European Type C Outlets

This version uses the familiar European Type C two-pin plug. It is designed for travel to many popular European destinations including Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Greece and Iceland.

It is important to remember that Europe doesn’t use one universal electrical plug.

In particular, this Type C model is not the correct adapter for the UK or Ireland. Those destinations generally use the larger Type G plug. Other destinations can also use different outlet standards, so it’s worth checking the plug type used at each stop on your itinerary.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Useful for Cruise Ship Cabins

One reason European plug adapters can be particularly useful for cruise travel is that many cruise cabins include a European-style 220V outlet in addition to a North American outlet.

If you don’t have an adapter, that outlet may go completely unused. With a compatible adapter, it can become another useful charging location for your travel electronics.

I’ve covered this strategy in more detail in Cruise Ship Power Solutions: Making Use of the 220 Volt Cabin Outlet.

The HANYCONY does not include surge protection, which is an important consideration for cruise travel. However, cruise lines can also place restrictions on adapters that provide multiple AC outlets, so the lack of surge protection does not automatically mean an adapter is permitted onboard.

This post may contain affiliate links. We may make a commission when you use our links. This will never cost you extra. Thank you for supporting Cruise Packing List!

This Is a Plug Adapter, Not a Voltage Converter

This is one of the most important things to understand about international travel adapters.

The HANYCONY changes the physical plug configuration. It does not change the voltage coming from the outlet.

If you plug it into a 220-240V European outlet, the AC outlets on the adapter are still supplying that higher voltage.

Many modern electronics chargers are designed for worldwide voltage and are labeled something similar to INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz. Those devices can generally be used with the appropriate plug adapter.

A 120V-only appliance is different. Do not assume that a hair dryer, curling appliance or other high-powered device can safely be plugged into a European outlet simply because this adapter makes the plug fit.

Always check the voltage rating printed on the device or its charger before connecting it.

Bottom Line

The HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter packs two AC outlets, two USB-C ports and one USB-A port into a compact adapter.

It’s a useful option for European travel and can also help make use of European-style outlets found in many cruise cabins.

Just keep cruise-line rules in mind. In particular, because this model provides two AC outlets, it is not a good choice for Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises under their current multi-plug rules.

What are Other’s Saying?   Search this product’s Amazon reviews for “cruise” – may include reviews for other sizes or variations

This will allow you to make use of a European Type C outlet on your next cruise! Note that this is not a voltage converter. Many electronics are designed to operate in the 220 volt range. Important Power Adapter Rules for Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Cruises

TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter, 140W GaN, Black | International Plug Adaptor, 3 USB C and 1 USB A Charging Ports, Worldwide Power Outlet, US to Europe UK AUS Ireland

If you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises, be especially careful when choosing power adapters and charging devices. Royal Caribbean prohibits extension cords, power strips and multi-plug outlets. Under its current guidance, an allowed adapter can have one AC outlet plus up to four USB-A or USB-C charging ports. Devices with multiple AC outlets remain prohibited.

That means the HANYCONY adapter featured in this post is not a good choice for Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises. Although it does not have surge protection and its USB ports are useful for travel, it has two AC outlets. That second AC outlet makes it a multi-plug device under Royal Caribbean’s current rules.

See: Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

If you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity, here are two alternatives we’ve specifically looked at:

Cruise-line policies can change and electrical items remain subject to inspection by ship security, so check the current rules before sailing.

3 Apps You Need for International Travel: GigSky, Wise & Google Maps

3 apps you need for international travel: GigSky, Wise and Google Maps

3 Apps You Need for International Travel: GigSky, Wise & Google Maps

Your phone has become one of the most useful things you carry when traveling internationally. It holds boarding passes and reservations, gives you directions, helps you communicate, provides access to your money and can solve countless little problems that come up along the way.

I’ve previously written about the two most important things when traveling internationally: your passport and reliable access to money. Your phone comes in just behind those essentials because it has become the tool we use to access so much of everything else.

That makes the apps you put on your phone pretty important too.

You could install dozens of travel apps, but three categories handle an enormous portion of what I actually need when traveling outside the United States:

GigSky or another eSIM provider for connectivity.

Wise for managing and accessing money.

Google Maps for navigation, with Citymapper as a useful alternative in transit-heavy cities.

Together, they solve three of the most common international travel problems: How do I get online? How do I pay for things? And how do I get where I’m going?

In This Post

1. GigSky or Another eSIM Provider: Get Connected

GigSky

Reliable mobile data makes almost everything about international travel easier.

You may need your phone to navigate from the airport or cruise terminal, access reservations and tickets, check transportation schedules, translate something, order a ride, message your travel companions or simply look up information while you’re exploring.

Your regular wireless carrier may offer international roaming, and it may work perfectly. The problem is that you don’t want your entire trip depending on the word “may.”

I’ve experienced this firsthand.

During a river cruise on the Seine, our Verizon international coverage completely failed on both my phone and my wife’s phone even though international service was active. We were in Paris trying to navigate, access reservations and make the most of limited sightseeing time.

Without backup connectivity, the situation would have been much more difficult and we likely would have missed several places we’d traveled all that way to see.

That experience is a big reason I now consider a backup eSIM an important part of international travel.

eSim Providers To Consider:

Related: Why a Backup SIM is a Requirement for International Travel

Why an eSIM?

An eSIM is essentially a digital SIM that allows compatible phones to add another cellular plan without swapping a physical SIM card.

For international travel, that means you can potentially leave your normal cellular plan installed while adding a second provider for international data.

There are a number of international eSIM providers, and the best option can depend on where you’re traveling, how long you’ll be gone and how much data you need.

The bigger point isn’t that everyone needs to use the same company.

The important thing is having another way to get connected.

Your primary international plan and an eSIM don’t necessarily compete with one another. They can back each other up.

Why GigSky Is Particularly Interesting for Cruises

GigSky is particularly compelling for cruise travel because it offers cruise-specific connectivity in addition to land-based plans.

That’s different from a typical international eSIM that connects to terrestrial cellular networks while you’re in port but loses that connection after the ship heads out to sea.

If you’re buying an eSIM specifically for a cruise, check whether the plan provides land coverage, cruise ship coverage or both. Those are not the same thing.

For cruise travelers who want another connectivity option beyond the ship’s Wi-Fi and their regular carrier, that can make GigSky particularly useful.

Even if you prefer to unplug while you’re traveling, having a second connection available as a backup can be incredibly valuable when something goes wrong.

2. Wise: Manage Your Travel Money

Wise Travel Card

If connectivity is problem number one, access to money is arguably even more important.

My broader international travel strategy is not based on having one perfect credit or debit card. It’s based on having multiple independent ways to access money and keeping those payment methods separate.

Wise fits extremely well into that strategy.

Wise lets you hold and convert money in multiple currencies and spend from your balance using a Wise debit card. You can convert some money into your destination’s currency before leaving, or leave funds in dollars and allow Wise to handle the conversion when you make a purchase.

For a trip that crosses several countries and currencies, that’s particularly convenient.

But currency conversion isn’t actually my favorite reason for using Wise.

Wise Can Be a Financial Firewall

When I’m traveling, I don’t particularly like the idea of repeatedly inserting the debit card connected directly to my primary checking account into unfamiliar ATMs, ticket machines and payment terminals.

Wise gives me another layer between those transactions and my everyday banking.

I can transfer a limited amount of travel money into Wise and spend from that balance instead.

If there’s a problem, I haven’t necessarily exposed the debit card attached directly to the account I use for everyday banking.

I think of Wise as a financial firewall of sorts for travel.

I cover that strategy, currency conversion, ATM withdrawals, digital cards and more in much more detail here:

Related: Using Wise for Travel: Convert Currency, Spend Abroad & Protect Your Everyday Card

Don’t Make Wise Your Only Card

Wise is a debit card, not a credit card, and I don’t think it should be your only payment method.

I still want a good travel credit card for things such as hotel deposits, rental cars, large purchases and situations where credit-card protections are useful.

I also want another backup card stored separately.

A wallet containing three cards isn’t really three backups if losing the wallet means losing all three at once.

Wise works particularly well as one component of a diversified travel-money setup.

And when an ATM or payment terminal offers to charge you in U.S. dollars instead of the local currency, generally choose the local currency and decline the terminal’s currency conversion.

3. Google Maps: Know Where You’re Going Before You Get There

The third essential app is Google Maps.

It sounds obvious, but international travel is where Google Maps becomes much more than something you open when you need driving directions.

Before leaving home, save important locations for your trip:

  • Your airport
  • Hotel
  • Cruise terminal
  • Train and metro stations
  • Excursion meeting points
  • Attractions you’ve already booked
  • Restaurants you want to try
  • ATMs
  • Pharmacies
  • Rental car locations
  • Transportation pickup and drop-off points

For a cruise, I especially like saving the cruise terminal and important locations around each port before arriving.

If you’re exploring independently, you can also save the location of the ship or terminal before wandering off. That gives you a quick reference point when it’s time to head back.

Instead of arriving in another country and starting from scratch, your phone already contains a basic roadmap for the trip.

Google Maps Is Useful for More Than Directions

Walking directions are one of the features I use most when traveling internationally.

Google Maps can also help you find nearby train stations, restaurants, coffee shops, pharmacies, ATMs and other places you may need while you’re out exploring.

That becomes particularly useful in a city where street names, public transportation systems and even the language may be unfamiliar.

You can also save places you want to visit ahead of time. When several saved locations are clustered together, it’s much easier to see what makes sense to visit during the same outing.

Download Offline Maps

Downloading Google Maps data for your destination before leaving home is one of the easiest travel backups you can create.

If cellular data isn’t working, you’ll still have access to downloaded map information.

Offline maps do have limitations, so I wouldn’t treat them as a complete replacement for connectivity.

That’s another reason the combination of eSIM + Google Maps works so well.

The offline map is your backup.

The eSIM provides the live connection that makes navigation much more useful.

Consider Citymapper for Public Transportation

Citymapper app

If you’re going to be navigating a large city primarily by subway, train and bus, Citymapper is also worth installing.

Google Maps is my choice as the general-purpose international travel app because it works in so many destinations and handles walking, driving, places and navigation in one place.

Citymapper is much more focused on urban transportation.

For a trip involving several days in a major city, there’s no reason you can’t have both installed.

I think of them this way:

Google Maps = your general international navigation app

Citymapper = your public-transportation specialist

Personally, I tend to come back to Google Maps again and again, even for public transportation but this is another one of those “have a backup scenarios”. I have and recommend both.

The Common Theme: Don’t Depend on One Thing

The real connection between these three apps is redundancy.

Your eSIM gives you another way to get online if your primary service doesn’t work.

Wise gives you another way to access money without relying entirely on the debit card connected to your everyday checking account.

Offline Google Maps gives you useful navigation information even when your connection disappears.

That’s the same philosophy I discuss in The Two Most Important Things When Traveling Internationally.

One lost wallet, one failed cellular connection or one problem with a card shouldn’t be enough to derail your trip.

Set Everything Up Before You Leave

The airport after you’ve landed in another country is a terrible place to discover that something wasn’t configured correctly.

Before your trip:

  • Install and configure your eSIM.
  • Make sure your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked if required.
  • Learn how to switch between your cellular plans.
  • Set up and fund your Wise account.
  • Receive and activate your physical Wise card if you plan to use one.
  • Add eligible payment cards to your phone’s digital wallet.
  • Save important destinations in Google Maps.
  • Download offline maps for the places you’ll be visiting.

Then test as much as you reasonably can before departure.

The goal isn’t to spend your vacation staring at your phone. It’s the opposite.

With connectivity, money and navigation already figured out, you can spend less time solving problems and more time enjoying where you traveled all that way to see.

TOOLETRIES Koby Mini Dopp Kit: Compact Silicone Toiletry Bag – On Sale for $19.99

TOOLETRIES The Koby Dopp Kit Toiletry Bag

TOOLETRIES Koby Mini Dopp Kit: Compact Silicone Toiletry Bag for Travel

Packing light is easier when your travel gear doesn’t take up more space than it needs to. The TOOLETRIES Koby Mini Dopp Kit is a compact toiletry bag designed for travelers who only need room for the essentials.

At approximately 8.5 x 2.75 x 2 inches, it’s considerably smaller than a traditional full-size toiletry bag. Its silicone construction also gives it an important advantage over many fabric Dopp kits: spills and bathroom messes are much easier to clean up.

A Small Toiletry Bag for the Essentials

The biggest thing to understand about the Koby Mini is right in the name: this is a small toiletry bag.

That’s potentially a major advantage if you don’t need a large hanging organizer or bulky shaving kit. Its long, narrow shape can hold a focused collection of everyday grooming items while using relatively little room inside a suitcase, backpack or carry-on.

Depending on the size of your individual items, potential uses include:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Razor and shaving supplies
  • Travel-size toiletries
  • Deodorant
  • Comb or small grooming tools
  • Small bottles and tubes

If you travel with several full-size bottles and a large collection of toiletries, you’ll probably want something bigger. The Koby Mini makes more sense for travelers who bring a relatively small number of essentials.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Silicone Construction Is a Big Advantage

The silicone construction is one of the features that sets the Koby Mini apart from a conventional fabric toiletry bag.

Toothpaste, shampoo, shaving products and other liquids have a habit of leaking at exactly the wrong time. With a fabric organizer, a spill can soak into the bag itself and leave you cleaning or washing the entire thing.

The Koby Mini’s silicone material is water-resistant, leak-resistant and easy to wipe clean. If something spills inside or the bag gets wet around a bathroom sink, cleanup should be much simpler than with an absorbent fabric bag.

That’s a practical feature for something specifically designed to carry products that can leak.

Useful for Cruise Travel

The Koby Mini is particularly well suited to cruise travel because both luggage space and cabin storage space can be limited.

Rather than leaving a handful of grooming products scattered around the bathroom counter, you can keep frequently used items together in one compact bag. Its narrow footprint also makes it easier to tuck onto a shelf, into a drawer or into another small storage space when you’re finished getting ready.

Because the exterior is easy to wipe clean, it’s also a sensible material for something that’s likely to spend much of the trip near a bathroom sink.

More Than a Toiletry Bag

The Koby Mini doesn’t necessarily have to be used for toiletries.

Its long, compact shape could also make it a useful organizer for:

  • Charging cables
  • Small chargers and electronics
  • Travel adapters
  • Other small travel accessories

Using separate small organizers for different types of gear can also make it easier to find what you need without digging through the bottom of your suitcase.

TOOLETRIES Koby Mini Dopp Kit – Key Features

  • Compact dimensions: Approximately 8.5 x 2.75 x 2 inches
  • Silicone construction: Durable and easy to clean
  • Leak-resistant design: Particularly useful for toiletries and liquids
  • Heavy-duty zipper: Designed for regular travel and everyday use
  • Antimicrobial material: A useful feature for bathroom and grooming applications

Is the Koby Mini the Right Size?

The Koby Mini isn’t intended to replace a large toiletry organizer.

If you want to carry multiple full-size bottles, extensive grooming supplies and everything else you might need in the bathroom, look at a larger Dopp kit.

But if you’re trying to keep your packing streamlined, the smaller size is exactly what makes the Koby Mini interesting. You get a dedicated organizer for the essentials without giving up a large section of your luggage to a toiletry bag.

Bottom Line

The TOOLETRIES Koby Mini Dopp Kit combines a genuinely compact size with a silicone exterior that’s particularly well suited to toiletries, spills and wet bathroom environments.

For cruise passengers, carry-on travelers and anyone who packs relatively light, it’s an appealing alternative to a bulky traditional Dopp kit.
