The Pack All Water-Resistant Zipper Pouch has earned a permanent spot in my backpack. I used this exact pouch for years, finally wore out my original one, tried to replace it with other similar bags I already owned and eventually ordered the same pouch again because none of the others worked quite as well for me.

For my use, the size and material are just right. It is thin enough to slide easily into a backpack or personal item, but big enough to hold the small necessities I like to keep together when traveling. I have used it for vitamins, prescription bottles and packets, and other small essentials that I do not want loose in my bag.

That is what makes this such a good cruise and travel organizer. It is not bulky. It’s not complicated. It is just a simple zip pouch that makes a backpack, carry-on or excursion bag easier to use.

Why I Like This Pouch

The biggest thing I like about this pouch is the balance of size, weight and flexibility. Some organizers are too bulky. Others are too small to be useful. This one hits a nice middle ground. It is thin and lightweight, but still large enough to hold everyday travel necessities.

For me, it works especially well as a backpack organizer. I use it for small items that I want to keep grouped together instead of letting them scatter around the bottom of my bag. That can include vitamins, prescription bottles or packets, cords, receipts, small travel items and other easy-to-lose essentials.

Good Cruise Uses

Cruise travel involves a lot of small, easy-to-misplace items. Chargers, medications, receipts, sunscreen packets, hand sanitizer, wipes, pens and other small essentials can quickly disappear into a carry-on, backpack or day bag.

  • Vitamins and prescriptions: A handy way to keep bottles, packets and other daily-use items together in a backpack or personal item.
  • Embarkation day essentials: Useful for keeping small must-have items easy to reach while boarding.
  • Cables and chargers: Good for phone cords, charging blocks, earbuds and other small electronics accessories.
  • Excursion bag: Helpful for sunscreen packets, lip balm, wipes, hand sanitizer, cash, receipts and other port-day items.
  • Backpack organization: Keeps small items from ending up loose at the bottom of your bag.
  • Travel paperwork: Can be used for printed confirmations, notes, shuttle information and other documents.

Water-Resistant, Not a Dry Bag

This pouch is described as water-resistant, which can be helpful in a travel bag, backpack, pool bag or beach tote. It can add a little extra protection from damp towels, light splashes, spills or general travel messes.

That said, I would not treat this as a true waterproof dry bag. For phones, passports, cash or important documents in heavy rain, on a small boat or at the beach, I would use an additional layer of protection. For everyday backpack and cruise organization, though, this style of pouch is very handy.

Thin, Lightweight and Easy to Pack

One of the reasons I like this pouch so much is that it does not take over my bag. It is thin enough to fit easily into a backpack, but still big enough to be useful. That combination makes it more practical than a lot of bulkier organizers.

I am definitely a bag lover. What can I say… they’re my bag. 🙂 I have owned dozens of backpacks from a variety of manufacturers, from cheap bags to higher-end packs. Add duffels, packing cubes and toiletry bags to the list and the number gets even larger.

I became a big fan of Cotopaxi when I first found them on Indiegogo. They were raising money to go into production, and I liked what they were saying. I backed the project and got their Allpa travel pack. When I got it, I loved it. It was high quality, loaded with thoughtful features and had a unique colorful design I had not seen in any other pack at the time.

Since then, I have picked up multiple Cotopaxi packs, bags, packing cubes and accessories. The Cotopaxi Mente 32L Daypack is another interesting option from Cotopaxi, and it has a lot that makes sense for cruise travel, flights, road trips and port days.

At 32 liters, this is a roomy daypack. It gives you enough space for travel essentials, a light jacket, electronics, snacks, water bottles, documents and the small items you want close at hand. For cruisers, that makes it a useful candidate for embarkation day, port days and general travel.

But First… Del Día vs Cada Día?

Cotopaxi uses a couple of names that are helpful to understand when you are shopping their bags.

Del Día is Spanish for “of the day.” When it comes to Cotopaxi gear, Del Día means you are getting a one-of-a-kind color combination. There is no telling exactly what the final bag will look like. With different panels, zippers, pulls and fabric colors, there are many possible combinations, and each piece of gear is unique.

Cotopaxi says its Del Día Collection uses leftover deadstock fabric. That helps keep usable material out of the landfill and gives each bag its own look.

Cada Día is Spanish for “each day.” In Cotopaxi’s lineup, Cada Día means you are getting a predesigned colorway. These are the standard designs that are available regularly, so you know what color combination you are ordering.

This Mente listing is for a Cada Día version, so you are choosing a known design rather than ordering a surprise one-of-a-kind Del Día color combination.

Why This Backpack Makes Sense for Cruising

Cruise travel is different from a normal vacation because there are several moments where a good backpack can make the day easier. On embarkation day, your larger bags may be delivered to your cabin later. On disembarkation day, you may be carrying essentials while waiting for transportation or flights. On port days, you may need a practical bag for walking around, excursions, sunscreen, water bottles and small purchases.

The Cotopaxi Mente 32L has the kind of size and organization that can work well for that role. It is still a daypack, but it is a roomy one with enough space for travel extras.

  • Hotel pre-cruise bag: Handy for overnight essentials if you are staying near the port before sailing.
  • Family overflow bag: A good place for shared items like sunscreen, wipes, hand sanitizer, ponchos, snacks and extra layers.
  • Tech and work travel: The padded laptop/tablet sleeve makes this useful for travelers bringing a computer or tablet.

32L Capacity

The 32L size is one of the most appealing things about this bag. It is bigger than many basic school-style backpacks and gives you more room for cruise travel extras. That can be helpful if you want one backpack that can handle both travel days and port days.

For travelers who like having room for layers, water bottles, medication, documents, electronics and a few just-in-case items, 32L can be a very practical size. It gives you flexibility without moving all the way into full travel-pack territory.

For a quick walk off the ship, 32L may be more than you need. For full travel days, embarkation day and excursions where you want to carry more than the bare minimum, it can be a very useful size.

Organization and Pockets

The Cotopaxi Mente 32L includes dual water bottle pockets, interior organization, a zippered mesh pocket, a protective accessory pocket and a padded sleeve for up to a 16-inch laptop or tablet. Those features make it more useful than a basic single-compartment backpack.

For cruise travel, organization matters. It gives you places to separate electronics, documents, smaller accessories and items you want to reach quickly. That can help keep your bag from becoming one large pile of chargers, snacks, sunscreen and loose receipts.

Comfort Features

This backpack also includes a supportive, breathable back panel, sternum strap and hip belt. Those features can be helpful when the bag is packed for a full travel day or a longer shore excursion.

A hip belt on a daypack is not something everyone needs all the time, but it can be useful when the bag is loaded. If you are carrying water bottles, electronics, a jacket, travel documents and a few extras, better load support can make the bag more comfortable over the course of the day.

Water-Resistant Construction

The Mente 32L is described as having durable, water-resistant construction. That is useful for travel, especially around airports, cruise ports, pool decks, damp towels, light rain and unexpected splashes.

Water-resistant does not mean waterproof. I would still use extra protection for passports, phones, cash and important documents if you are expecting heavy rain, beach time or small-boat excursions. For normal travel use, though, water resistance is a helpful feature.

Good Fit for Embarkation Day

Embarkation day is one of the best use cases for a backpack like this. Once you hand over your checked luggage, you may not see it again until later in the afternoon or evening. A roomy backpack can keep your important items with you.

Consider packing items like cruise documents, passports, medications, glasses, chargers, a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, a light layer and anything else you may want before your cabin is fully settled.

Port Day Considerations

For port days, this bag gives you enough room for a more complete day-out setup. That can include water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, a rain jacket, a small towel, backup battery, hand sanitizer, wipes, travel documents and small purchases.

If your port day involves a long walking tour, a beach transfer or an excursion where you want to bring extra gear, the 32L size can be a real advantage. For quick walks off the ship, you may prefer something smaller, but for a fuller day out this gives you room to work with.

Bottom Line

Based on the specs and my experience with Cotopaxi gear, the Cotopaxi Mente 32L Daypack is worth a look for cruisers who want a roomy, organized backpack that can handle travel days, embarkation day and port days. The 32L capacity, laptop sleeve, dual water bottle pockets, interior organization, water-resistant construction and comfort features make it more capable than a basic small daypack.

I have used and liked a lot of Cotopaxi gear over the years, starting with the original Allpa travel pack I backed on Indiegogo. Cotopaxi bags tend to be thoughtfully designed, colorful and practical. The Mente 32L fits that same general idea: a useful, good-looking backpack with enough space and organization for real travel.

For cruises, flights, hotels, road trips and port days, this is worth a look if you want one backpack that can do a lot.

Hands on Review: HOXIS Mesh Beach Bag!

Prior to a recent cruise we decided to up our beach game bag. We really didn’t have a travel beach bag per se. We we would use whatever we happened to have with us and… sometimes that wasn’t pretty.

When I started looking for a beach tote I had a couple of things in mind.  First, I wanted something compact enough that it didn’t take too much room when it came time to pack. Second, I wanted a mesh bag so sand could easily be removed.

After some searching I landed on the HOXIS Mesh Tote. It fit my two main criteria, looked good and was well priced. We went with gray but it’s available in a number of colors.

Conclusions

This is a great bag that fit out needs exactly. It’s light and compact for easy packing all the while being large enough for and sturdy enough for a beach outing. We’re happy with this purchase and looking forward to taking this on our next beach vacation.
