Osprey Daylite Wheeled Carry On 40L: Roll It, Carry It or Collapse It for Storage

The Osprey Daylite wheeled carry on combines the convenience of rolling luggage with deployable backpack straps and a collapsible frame. It can roll through airports like a traditional suitcase, be carried as a backpack when wheels are impractical and take up less room when stored between trips.

With a 40L capacity and a large duffel-style opening, it provides useful packing space for weekend trips, business travel, cruises and longer vacations for travelers who pack light.

Rolling Luggage with Backpack Straps

Most wheeled carry-ons are designed to be rolled and little else. The Osprey Daylite Carry-On Wheeled Duffel 40L adds deployable backpack straps, giving travelers another option when the terrain becomes difficult.

The backpack straps could be especially helpful when navigating:

  • Stairways and public transportation
  • Cobblestone and uneven streets
  • Crowded airports and train stations
  • Hotels and rentals without elevators
  • Cruise terminals and port transfers

The straps remain tucked away while the bag is being rolled, keeping them out of the way until they are needed.

Lightweight 40L Capacity

Amazon currently lists this model at approximately 4.94 pounds, which is relatively lightweight for rolling luggage with a telescoping handle, wheels and backpack straps. A lighter starting weight leaves more of an airline’s baggage allowance available for clothing and travel gear.

The 40L main compartment has a wide opening that makes it easier to pack clothing, shoes, jackets and packing cubes.

Collapsible for Easier Storage

One of the Daylite’s most unusual features is its collapsible spring-frame design. The frame provides structure while the bag is being used but can collapse to reduce the amount of room it requires in storage.

That can be useful in:

  • Small apartments and closets
  • Car trunks and camper storage areas
  • Hotel rooms with limited floor space
  • Cruise cabins where open luggage can become an obstacle

It may not store completely flat, but it should require less room than a similarly sized rigid suitcase.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Simple, Flexible Organization

The primary storage area is a large open compartment rather than a collection of small divided sections. This provides flexibility for packing cubes, shoes, jackets and oddly shaped travel gear.

Additional storage includes a top quick-access pocket for liquids and small essentials, along with a full-length exterior side pocket.

Travelers who prefer extensive organization may want to add packing cubes or smaller travel pouches to create a customized packing system.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Wheeled Duffel 40L Specifications

Capacity 40 liters
Amazon-Listed Dimensions Approximately 21.5 × 14 × 9 inches
Amazon-Listed Weight Approximately 4.94 pounds
Wheels Two 3-inch inline-style wheels
Carry Options Telescoping handle, grab handles and deployable backpack straps
Main Material Recycled polyester ripstop fabric
Storage Design Collapsible spring frame

The listed dimensions are close to the common 22 × 14 × 9-inch carry-on limit used by many major U.S. airlines. However, carry-on limits vary by airline, aircraft, destination and ticket type.

Product specifications can also change. Compare the current measurements on the Amazon listing with your airline’s requirements before traveling.

Two Wheels Instead of Four Spinner Wheels

The Daylite uses two relatively large inline-style wheels rather than four small spinner wheels. It must be tilted and pulled behind the traveler, so it will not move sideways like a spinner suitcase.

The advantage is that larger recessed wheels can perform better on carpet, rough pavement and uneven surfaces. They also take up less interior room than four external spinner-wheel assemblies.

Travelers who mainly want effortless movement through smooth airport terminals may still prefer a traditional four-wheel spinner.

Things to Consider

  • It is soft-sided: The flexible construction is easier to compress and store, but it does not provide the rigid protection of a hard-shell suitcase.
  • Backpack comfort may vary: The straps are useful when wheels are impractical, but a fully packed 40L bag may not be as comfortable as a dedicated travel backpack.
  • It does not have spinner wheels: The two-wheel design must be pulled rather than rolled upright in every direction.
  • Airline rules vary: Confirm the packed dimensions and weight before each trip.

Final Thoughts

The Osprey Daylite wheeled carry on stands out because it can function as rolling luggage, a backpack and a collapsible travel bag. Its lightweight construction, 40L capacity and flexible carrying options could make it a particularly good choice for travelers who encounter stairs, public transportation, uneven streets or limited storage space.

Antler Soft Stripe Large Luggage: Big Checked Bag Capacity Without Big Checked Bag Weight – On Sale for $188, Save 47%!

ANTLER - Soft Stripe Large Luggage - 31" Softside Suitcase, Durable, Lightweight & Expandable, 4 Spinner Wheels - Adjustable Handle, TSA Lock, Black

Antler Soft Stripe Large Luggage: Big Checked Bag Capacity Without Big Checked Bag Weight

Antler Soft Stripe Large Luggage is the larger checked-bag version of the Soft Stripe suitcase line. I have the medium version and love that bag. This large version has a lot of the same features, but with more packing capacity for longer trips, family travel, extended cruises or anyone who wants one larger checked suitcase.

Related: Antler Soft Stripe Review!

The big thing that stands out here is the weight. Large checked bags can get heavy before you even pack them. This one is listed at just 5.95 lbs, which is very light for a large softside suitcase.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Why the Large Soft Stripe Caught My Attention

After using the medium Soft Stripe, the large version makes a lot of sense. It keeps the same general softside design, expandable packing space, spinner wheels, adjustable handle, TSA-approved lock and lightweight construction, but gives you quite a bit more room.

For cruise travel, that can be a real advantage. Longer cruises, colder-weather itineraries, European trips, formal nights, extra shoes, packing cubes, jackets, toiletries and pre-cruise hotel stays can all add bulk quickly.

A smaller checked bag can be great for a lighter trip. But sometimes you just need more room. The Antler Soft Stripe Large Luggage looks like the bigger option in the lineup for those trips where the medium is not quite enough.

Large Capacity, Still Lightweight

The Antler Soft Stripe Large is listed with a 105L packing capacity and a maximum expanded volume of 122L. That is a lot of packing space.

Even with that capacity, the listed weight is just 5.95 lbs. That is one of the most interesting things about this bag. A lighter suitcase gives you more of your airline weight allowance for the things you are actually packing.

That can be especially useful for cruises because cruise packing often includes items that are not part of a normal hotel trip. Think dressier clothes, swimwear, sandals, beach items, laundry supplies, medications, electronics, magnetic hooks, toiletries and cruise-specific extras.

Medium vs Large Soft Stripe

The medium Soft Stripe is a great in-between checked bag. That is the version I have and really like. It gives you more room than a carry-on without automatically jumping to a huge checked suitcase.

The large version is the next step up. It is the one I would look at for longer cruises, heavier packers, family trips, cold-weather travel or anyone who wants one larger checked suitcase instead of trying to squeeze everything into a smaller bag.

Bag Listed Capacity Listed Weight Best Fit
Antler Soft Stripe Medium 74L / 88L expanded 5.29 lbs Smaller checked bag, shorter cruises, lighter packing
Antler Soft Stripe Large 105L / 122L expanded 5.95 lbs Longer cruises, family travel, larger checked-bag packing

Key Features

  • Large checked luggage size – useful for longer trips, bigger cruise packing lists and travelers who want more room.
  • 105L packing capacity – lots of space for clothing, shoes, toiletries, jackets and cruise extras.
  • Expandable design – expands from 12.2 inches to 14.2 inches deep, with a listed maximum volume of 122L.
  • Very lightweight for a large bag – Antler lists this suitcase at 5.95 lbs.
  • Softside construction – flexible for packing cubes, shoes, layers and last-minute extras.
  • Four spinner wheels – designed for upright rolling through airports, hotels and cruise terminals.
  • Adjustable handle – helpful for maneuvering a larger suitcase.
  • TSA-approved combination lock – built-in lock for checked travel.
  • Interior organization – deep compartments and internal pockets help organize a larger packing load.
  • Recycled polyester – Antler lists the suitcase as made with recycled polyester.

Why This Could Be a Good Cruise Bag

Cruise packing is different from regular travel. Even when you are trying to pack light, cruises can require a surprising amount of stuff.

You may be packing for sea days, port days, dinners, excursions, pool time, formal night, pre-cruise travel, post-cruise travel and changing weather. That is where a larger checked suitcase can make sense.

The trick is finding a large bag that does not eat up too much weight before it is packed. That is where this Antler bag looks strong. At 5.95 lbs, it gives you a lot of listed packing capacity without starting out overly heavy.

Softside Luggage Still Makes Sense

Hardside luggage is popular, but we still like softside luggage for a lot of travel. Softside bags can be more forgiving when you are packing irregular items like shoes, toiletry bags, jackets, laundry bags and packing cubes.

A softside checked bag can also be easier to work with when you are trying to fit a little more into the suitcase without everything feeling rigid. For cruise travel, where packing lists tend to get bulky, that flexibility can be useful.

Who This Bag May Make Sense For

The Antler Soft Stripe Large Luggage may make sense for:

  • Longer cruises
  • Cold-weather cruises
  • European cruises with pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel stays
  • Travelers who pack dressier clothes or extra shoes
  • Families sharing suitcase space
  • Anyone who wants one larger checked bag instead of multiple smaller bags
  • Travelers who like softside luggage
  • Anyone who wants a large suitcase that starts out unusually light

Cruise Packing Tips for a Large Checked Bag

  • Use packing cubes so the larger space does not turn into a messy pile.
  • Pack heavier items toward the wheel end of the suitcase.
  • Use the expansion zipper as flexibility, not as an excuse to overpack.
  • Weigh the packed bag before heading to the airport.
  • Use a bright luggage tag or luggage strap so the bag is easier to spot.
  • Keep passports, cruise documents, medication, electronics, chargers, valuables and a change of clothes in your carry-on or personal item.
  • Once onboard, unpack and store the suitcase under the cruise cabin bed if space allows.

About Antler Luggage

Antler is a British luggage brand with roots going back to 1914. The company makes suitcases, travel bags and accessories, and its current lineup includes both hard shell and softside luggage options.

The Soft Stripe line is especially interesting because of the lightweight softside construction. I was impressed enough with the medium version that the large version immediately made sense as a bigger checked-bag option.

Final Thoughts

I love the medium Antler Soft Stripe bag. It hits a really useful middle ground for travel, and it has been one of the more interesting luggage finds I have come across.

The Antler Soft Stripe Large Luggage takes a lot of that same appeal and scales it up. You get a larger checked suitcase, expandable packing space, softside flexibility, spinner wheels, a TSA-approved lock and a very light listed weight for the size.

For cruise travel, this looks like a strong option when the medium bag is not quite enough. It is especially interesting for longer trips, bigger packing lists or anyone who wants a large checked bag without starting with a heavy suitcase.

Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage – Save 26% + Hands-On Review

ANTLER - Soft Stripe Medium Luggage

Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage: A Rare In-Between Size for Cruise Travel

I have been looking for something very specific: a suitcase that lands between a typical carry-on and a medium checked bag. That size range is surprisingly hard to find.

Related: Antler Soft Stripe Review!

We have used Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch carry-on bags and the Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bags and have liked them very much. The 21-inch Maxlite is a great carry-on, and the 25-inch Maxlite has been our go-to checked bag for cruise travel. But there are times when a carry-on feels too tight and a full 25-inch checked bag feels like more suitcase than I want to take.

That is why I picked up the Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage. It has a rare middle-ground capacity: more useful packing space than a standard carry-on, but not as large as many traditional medium checked bags.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Why This Size Makes Sense

Most luggage jumps from carry-on size to a fairly large checked bag. That can leave a gap for travelers who want more room than a carry-on, but still want to keep things compact and manageable.

That middle size can be especially useful for cruise travel. Cruise packing often involves more than just clothes. You may be packing shoes, toiletries, formal night clothing, swimsuits, layers, electronics, chargers, medications, cruise documents and pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel items. A standard carry-on can get tight quickly.

At the same time, not every trip needs a larger checked bag. For shorter cruises, warm-weather itineraries, solo trips, lighter packing, or travel that includes trains, taxis and hotels, a smaller checked bag can be much easier to manage.

The Rare Middle-Ground Capacity

This is the main reason I bought this bag. The Antler Soft Stripe Medium is listed with a 74L packing capacity and a maximum expanded volume of 88L.

On paper, 74L is a really interesting target capacity. It gives you roughly 60% more packing capacity than a 46L carry-on without going all the way to a 90L+ checked bag.

For comparison, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch carry-on is listed at 46L, while the Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bag is listed at 91L. That makes the Antler Soft Stripe Medium much roomier than a carry-on, but still a step down from the larger checked suitcase we normally use.

Size Comparison

Bag Listed Capacity Listed Weight General Role
Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch Carry-On 46L 5.4 lbs Carry-on travel
Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage 74L packing capacity / 88L max volume 5.29 lbs Smaller checked bag / in-between size
Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch Checked Bag 91L 6.8 lbs Full medium checked bag

Why I Bought the Antler Soft Stripe Medium

The appeal here is simple: it gives me more room than a carry-on without automatically jumping to a larger checked bag.

That can be a really useful size for:

  • Shorter cruises where carry-on-only feels too tight
  • Warm-weather cruises with lighter clothing
  • Fly-to-cruise trips where you want to keep checked luggage manageable
  • European cruise travel where trains, taxis and sidewalks may be part of the trip
  • Travelers who want a checked bag but do not want to overpack
  • Anyone who likes the idea of a smaller checked suitcase with real packing capacity
  • European travel, especially trips where you cannot quite get down to a single carry-on

Related: What size luggage should I take on my cruise?

  • Lightweight construction – Antler lists this bag at 5.29 lbs.

  • Four spinner wheels – designed for upright rolling and easy movement.

Why a Smaller Checked Bag Can Be a Good Cruise Choice

A lot of cruise packing advice focuses on either carry-on-only travel or larger checked suitcases. I think there is a very practical space in between.

A smaller checked bag gives you more room for real cruise packing, but it can still be easier to handle than a bigger suitcase. That matters when you are moving through airports, hotel lobbies, cruise terminals, parking lots, elevators and cabin hallways.

It can also help limit overpacking. Larger bags are easy to fill just because the space is there. A middle-size checked bag gives you extra room compared with a carry-on, but still encourages a more focused packing list.

Softside Luggage for Cruise Travel

We still like softside luggage for a lot of travel. Hardside bags are popular, but softside luggage can be more forgiving when you are packing around shoes, packing cubes, toiletry bags, jackets and last-minute extras.

The exterior pocket is also useful. I would not use it for valuables, but it can be handy for flat or flexible items before the bag gets checked. Think printed paperwork, a lightweight jacket, luggage tag holders or other non-valuable items you may want to access before handing the bag over.

How I Plan to Use This Bag

I bought this as a smaller checked bag option. For trips where the Travelpro 21-inch carry-on feels too small but the Travelpro 25-inch checked bag feels like too much, this Antler bag looks like a very useful middle-ground choice.

For cruise travel, I can see using it as the main checked bag for a shorter or lighter-packing trip, then pairing it with a personal item or small carry-on for essentials.

As always, anything truly important should stay with you. Keep passports, IDs, boarding documents, medications, electronics, valuables, chargers and a change of clothes in your carry-on or personal item.

Cruise Packing Tips for This Size

  • Use packing cubes to keep the smaller checked-bag space organized.
  • Pack shoes toward the wheel end of the suitcase.
  • Use the expansion zipper as extra flexibility, not as an invitation to overpack.
  • Weigh the packed bag before flying.
  • Use a bright luggage tag or luggage strap so the bag is easy to spot.
  • Keep cruise documents, medication, electronics and valuables with you.
  • Unpack once onboard, then store the suitcase under the cruise cabin bed if space allows.

About Antler Luggage

Antler is a British luggage brand with roots going back to 1914. The company makes suitcases, travel bags and accessories, and its current lineup includes both hard shell and softside luggage options.

I was not specifically shopping for a new luggage brand when I found this bag. The size is what caught my attention first. But Antler’s long luggage background, lightweight softside design and this unusual medium capacity made the Soft Stripe Medium worth trying.

Who This Bag May Make Sense For

The Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage may make sense for travelers who want more packing room than a carry-on without moving up to a larger checked suitcase.

It looks especially interesting for cruisers who pack thoughtfully, want a lighter checked bag, or want something easier to manage during fly-to-cruise travel. The size is the star here. It fills a gap that many luggage lines skip over.

Final Thoughts

We have had very good luck with our Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch and 25-inch bags, so I was not necessarily looking to replace those. I was looking for something more specific: a rare in-between size.

That is what made the Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage interesting enough for me to buy. It sits between a carry-on and our larger 25-inch checked bag in terms of packing capacity, while staying very light for a checked suitcase.

For cruise travel, that could be a really useful size. I will update after I have more real-world travel time with it, but based on the dimensions, capacity and weight, this is exactly the kind of middle-ground bag I had been trying to find.

LEVEL8 Grace Carry-On Luggage: Expandable Hardside Suitcase with Front Laptop Pocket – $127 on Lightning Deals

LEVEL8 Grace Hardside Carry On Luggage with Front Compartment, 20 Inch Expandable Suitcases with Wheels, Lightweight Carry On Suitcase for Airplane, Tsa Lock Approved, Black, 20-Inch

LEVEL8 Grace Carry-On Luggage: Expandable Hardside Suitcase with Front Laptop Pocket

The LEVEL8 Grace Carry-On Luggage is an expandable hardside suitcase with one feature that makes it stand out: a front laptop compartment. Most hardside carry-ons require you to open the entire suitcase to reach anything inside. This one gives you quicker access to a laptop, tablet, documents, boarding passes and other travel essentials.

That makes it an interesting option for business travel, weekend trips, flights to cruise ports and travelers who like the structure of hardside luggage but still want easier access to important items.

This is the 20-inch expandable version in black. The Amazon listing describes it as a carry-on suitcase with a PC+ABS hardside shell, 360-degree spinner wheels, aluminum telescoping handle, built-in TSA lock and front zippered laptop compartment.

Check Current Price & Availability →

In This Post

Why This Carry-On Is Interesting

Hardside carry-ons are popular because they offer structure, protection and a clean look. The downside is that many of them do not have easy-access exterior pockets. If you need your laptop, passport, paperwork, headphones or charging cable, you may have to open the entire suitcase.

The LEVEL8 Grace carry-on solves that problem with a front compartment built into the hardside design. That gives it some of the convenience of softside luggage while keeping the harder shell format many travelers prefer.

If you travel with a laptop or tablet, that front access section is the main reason to consider this bag over a basic hardside spinner.

Front Laptop Compartment

The front compartment is the big selling point here. It gives you a place for a laptop, tablet, documents and small travel items without opening the main suitcase.

That can be helpful at the airport, during a layover, at a hotel or any time you want quick access to electronics and paperwork. It also may let you keep your personal item smaller since some of your tech gear can ride in the suitcase instead.

The tradeoff is that a front laptop compartment uses some of the overall suitcase space. That is normal for this style of bag. The benefit is easier access; the downside is a slightly different packing layout compared with a basic open-shell carry-on.

Expandable Hardside Design

This is the expandable version of the LEVEL8 Grace carry-on. The listed packing volume is 36L and expands to 42L. That extra room can be useful on the return trip when your packing is less tidy or when you pick up a few extras.

The important detail is size. Once expanded, the depth increases from 9.8 inches to 11.3 inches. That may push the bag beyond some airline carry-on limits, so I would treat expansion as a useful bonus rather than something to rely on for every flight.

Expanded mode makes the most sense for road trips, hotel stays, cruise travel where you are not flying, or situations where you are okay checking the bag if needed.

Good Travel Uses

This suitcase is a good fit for short trips where organization and quick access matter. The hardside shell gives the bag structure, while the front pocket makes it more practical than a completely closed hardside design.

  • Business trips: The front laptop compartment is useful for work travel.
  • Weekend trips: The 36L to 42L capacity range works well for shorter travel.
  • Airport travel: Keep tech and documents easier to reach.
  • Hotel stays: The structured design helps keep items organized.
  • Road trips: The expandable design is handy when airline sizing is not a concern.
  • Hardside luggage fans: You get a hard shell with better quick-access storage.

The spinner wheels and telescoping handle are also practical for airports, hotel lobbies, parking garages and cruise terminals.

Cruise Travel Angle

For cruising, this could work well as an embarkation day carry-on, especially if you fly to your cruise port. You can use it for the items you want with you before checked luggage reaches your cabin.

That could include a change of clothes, toiletries, medications, travel documents, electronics, chargers, swimsuit, sunscreen and other first-day essentials. The front compartment is especially useful for passports, boarding documents, tablets and small electronics.

I would see this as a personal carry-on, short-cruise suitcase or pre-cruise hotel bag rather than a replacement for a checked bag on longer trips.

Important Carry-On Size Note

The Amazon listing gives the overall dimensions as 21.8” x 14.5” x 9.8” including wheels and handles. That is close to many common carry-on limits, but airline rules vary.

The expanded depth is listed at 11.3 inches. That is the dimension I would watch most carefully. Expansion is useful, but an expanded carry-on may not fit every airline’s published carry-on size rules or every overhead bin situation.

Before flying, compare the suitcase dimensions to your airline’s current carry-on rules, especially if you are flying a budget airline, international carrier or small regional aircraft.

Things to Consider

This suitcase has a lot going for it, but it is not the right carry-on for every traveler. The front laptop pocket is the standout feature, but it also changes how the bag packs.

  • Weight: At 9 lbs, this is not the lightest carry-on option.
  • Expanded size: The expanded depth may be too large for some carry-on rules.
  • Front pocket tradeoff: Easy tech access can reduce or reshape the main packing space.
  • Hardside structure: Hardside luggage protects and organizes well, but it does not flex like softside luggage.
  • Airline rules vary: Always check the airline you are actually flying.

For the right traveler, those tradeoffs may be reasonable. The key question is whether the front compartment is a feature you will actually use.

Final Thoughts

The LEVEL8 Grace Carry-On Luggage is worth a look if you want a hardside carry-on with easier access to your laptop, tablet and travel documents. The front compartment is the main reason to consider this suitcase over a basic hardside spinner.

I especially like the idea of this for business travel, flights to cruise ports, short trips and travelers who want electronics accessible without carrying a large separate laptop bag. The expandable design adds flexibility, but I would be careful about using expanded mode when airline carry-on sizing matters.

Bottom line: if you like hardside luggage but miss the convenience of an outside pocket, this LEVEL8 Grace expandable carry-on is a practical option to compare against more traditional carry-on suitcases.

ANTLER Soft Stripe 2.0 Medium Luggage Review: A Rare In-Between Checked Bag

I had been looking for something very specific: a suitcase that lands between a typical carry-on and a medium checked bag. That size range is surprisingly hard to find.

The ANTLER Soft Stripe 2.0 line is available in multiple sizes. The medium is the in-between size I purchased, but the carry-on and large checked bag may also make sense depending on how you travel. Pricing and availability can vary by retailer, size and color, so check both Amazon and ANTLER direct before buying.

The ANTLER Soft Stripe Medium is listed with a 74 – 88 L packing capacity and a maximum volume range of 84 – 99 L.

  • European travel, especially trips where you cannot quite get down to a single carry-on and still need to manage trains, taxis, sidewalks and hotels
  • Travelers who want a checked bag but do not want to overpack
  • Anyone who likes the idea of a smaller checked suitcase with real packing capacity

This is the Soft Stripe Medium next to Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bag. Both taper toward the top, presumably to keep the center of gravity lower so the bag is less likely to tip. The Soft Stripe looks to be more of a rectangular shape with less tapering. I really like this because max thickness comes into play when trying to shove a bag in a tight space. For example, that could matter when using an overhead luggage rack on the train from London to Southampton.

Double Spinner Wheels vs Single Spinner Wheels

When comparing suitcases, one detail worth looking at is the wheel design. Some spinner luggage uses single wheels at each corner, while other bags use double spinner wheels, meaning two smaller wheels side-by-side at each corner.

For cruise and travel use, double spinner wheels can be a nice upgrade. The wider wheel setup can help the suitcase feel more stable when rolling upright through airports, hotels, cruise terminals and ship corridors. They can also make the bag easier to turn, pivot and guide in tight spaces.

Single spinner wheels are simpler. They may be slightly lighter and have fewer moving parts, but they can sometimes feel less stable on a fully packed suitcase, especially when the bag is being pushed upright instead of pulled behind you.

  • Double spinner wheels: Usually feel smoother, steadier and easier to maneuver on flat indoor surfaces.
  • Single spinner wheels: Simpler design and sometimes lighter, but may not feel quite as stable when the bag is packed full.
  • Best surfaces: Spinner wheels work especially well in airports, hotels, cruise terminals and ship hallways.
  • Rough surfaces: Any spinner wheel can struggle on cobblestones, gravel, uneven sidewalks or rough pavement.

For most situations, I like double spinner wheels when the suitcase is otherwise well made. They tend to make a checked bag or carry-on easier to manage during the parts of travel where luggage gets handled the most: airports, hotels, terminals and getting to and from the ship.

ANTLER Luggage Default Lock Code

ANTLER Soft Stripe Medium main zipper and TSA lock

If you are wondering about the ANTLER luggage default lock code, the factory setting for ANTLER TSA locks is 000. On a new ANTLER suitcase, line up the dials to 0-0-0 and slide the release button to open the lock and release the zipper pulls.

That is also the starting point for setting your own combination. Before changing the code, make sure the lock is open and the dials are set to 000.

How to Set the ANTLER TSA Lock

  1. Set the dials to 000.
  2. Open the lock and release the zipper pulls.
  3. Press the small reset button with a pen or similar pointed object until it clicks.
  4. Turn the dials to your preferred 3-digit combination.
  5. Push the release button back in the direction of the arrow until the reset button clicks back into place.
  6. Test the new code before locking the zipper pulls back into the suitcase.

Important: Write your new code down somewhere safe. If the combination has already been changed, the default 000 code will probably no longer open the suitcase. ANTLER says there is no master key for forgotten combinations, so it is worth setting and testing the lock carefully before travel.

How Light Is the ANTLER Soft Stripe 2.0?

One of the most impressive things about the ANTLER Soft Stripe 2.0 line is the weight. These bags are very light for spinner luggage, especially when you look at the amount of packing space they provide.

The medium size I bought is listed at just 5.2 lbs. That is extremely light for a checked suitcase with a listed 74 – 88 L packing capacity, expandable design, front pocket, TSA lock, double spinner wheels and multiple handles.

The full Soft Stripe 2.0 lineup is light across the board:

  • ANTLER Soft Stripe 2.0 Carry-On: 4.1 lbs
  • ANTLER Soft Stripe 2.0 Medium Expandable: 5.2 lbs
  • ANTLER Soft Stripe 2.0 Large Expandable: 5.9 lbs

Those are impressive weights. I do not know that I can conclusively say these are the lightest bags on the market, but they have to be among the lightest spinner suitcases in their size range. That matters because luggage weight is not just a spec-sheet detail. Every pound the empty suitcase weighs is a pound you cannot use for clothes, shoes, toiletries, cruise gear or souvenirs before getting close to airline weight limits.

For cruise travel and Europe trips, lighter luggage is also easier to manage. You may be moving through airports, hotels, cruise terminals, train stations, sidewalks, elevators and cabin hallways. Starting with a lighter suitcase makes all of that a little easier, especially if you are trying to pack more than a carry-on without jumping to a bulky checked bag.

Storage Bag

Included storage bag for ANTLER Soft Stripe Medium luggage

As a bag lover, there is nothing like your bag coming with its own bag. Seriously though, this is another small thing that is thoughtful. I use plastic bags for some of my other bags. The inclusion of a purpose-built storage bag is a really nice bonus. This sort of attention to detail makes ANTLER stand out.

For cruise travel, and especially for trips where a single carry-on is not quite enough, this could be a really useful size. I will update after I have more real-world travel time with it, but based on the dimensions, capacity, weight and hands-on comparison, this is exactly the kind of middle-ground bag I had been trying to find.

More real-world observations to come, but so far I’m very impressed with this luggage.

Gorilla Grip Luggage Straps: Simple Backup for Checked Bags, 2-Pack – On Sale for $11.99, $6 Each

Gorilla Grip Luggage Straps: Simple Backup for Checked Bags

Gorilla Grip luggage straps for checked bags and travel

Checked luggage goes through a lot. Whether you are flying to a cruise port, checking a bag for a family trip, heading to a hotel before embarkation day or traveling with multiple suitcases, your luggage may get handled several times before it reaches your room or cabin.

These Gorilla Grip luggage straps are adjustable suitcase straps designed to wrap around luggage and help keep the bag closed. They can also make a suitcase much easier to identify at baggage claim, in a hotel luggage area or at the cruise terminal.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Why Luggage Straps Make Sense for Travel

A luggage strap is a simple travel accessory, but it can be useful in a few different ways.

First, it gives your suitcase a second wraparound closure. That can be helpful if your bag is packed full, if the zipper is older or if you simply want a little extra support around the suitcase during travel.

Second, a bright strap makes your luggage easier to spot. A lot of black, navy and gray suitcases look nearly identical when they are coming off an airport carousel, grouped in a hotel lobby or lined up at a cruise terminal. A colored strap is an easy visual marker.

Third, a strap can help take some pressure off the zipper area. That is especially useful for longer trips, cold-weather packing, family travel, checked bags and pre- or post-cruise hotel stays.

What Stands Out About These Gorilla Grip Luggage Straps

  • 2-pack: Includes two straps, which gives you options for one bag, two bags or a crossed wrap on a single suitcase.
  • Adjustable fit: The straps are listed as adjustable from 38 inches to 76 inches long.
  • Wide strap design: At 2 inches wide, these provide more surface contact than a narrow strap.
  • Bright color: The green color can help your suitcase stand out among similar bags.
  • Heavy-duty claim: Gorilla Grip lists these as able to withstand up to 500 pounds of pull force.
  • Multiple wrapping options: The straps can be used horizontally, vertically or crossed when using both straps together.

Best Ways to Use Them

For a checked suitcase, wrap the strap around the middle of the bag and tighten it before heading to the airport, hotel or cruise terminal. If your suitcase has a side handle, threading the strap through the handle can help keep the strap connected to the bag.

For added support, use both straps in a crossed pattern. This is a good option for larger checked bags or suitcases that are packed close to capacity.

For identification, place the strap so it is easy to see when the bag is standing upright. A visible luggage strap can make it much easier to spot your bag at baggage claim, in a hotel luggage storage area or during cruise embarkation.

Travel and Cruise Packing Tip

Luggage straps pair nicely with cruise luggage tag holders when you are heading on a cruise. The luggage tag holder helps keep your cruise line luggage tag protected and readable, while the strap helps make your suitcase easier to recognize and gives the bag an extra wraparound closure.

That combination can be especially useful if you are flying to port, staying at a hotel before your cruise or checking bags through a busy cruise terminal.

Who These Are Best For

  • Travelers who check bags
  • Cruisers who fly to their departure port
  • Anyone using older luggage with stressed zippers
  • Families traveling with multiple similar suitcases
  • Travelers who want easier bag identification at the airport, hotel or terminal
  • Anyone who tends to pack checked luggage tightly

Final Thoughts

These Gorilla Grip luggage straps are a simple travel add-on that can help with suitcase support, zipper stress and quick bag identification. They are small, reusable and easy to pack away between trips.

For checked luggage, family travel, flights to port and longer trips, luggage straps are an easy upgrade that can make travel day a little smoother.

Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage: Rare In-Between Size for Cruise Travel

Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage: Rare In-Between Size for Cruise Travel

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On: Our Go-To Cruise Carry-On Bag

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On: Our Go-To Cruise Carry-On Bag

Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-Inch Carry-On: Our Go-To Cruise Carry-On Bag

We own the Travelpro Maxlite 5 carry-on and like it very much. In fact, Travelpro has become our go-to luggage brand. We both use the Maxlite 5 25-inch size as our regular checked bags, and we also use the 21-inch Maxlite 5 bags as our carry-ons.

For cruise travel, the 21-inch Maxlite 5 has been a great companion bag. It gives us a practical carry-on for cruise documents, medication, electronics, valuables, a change of clothes and the things we want to keep with us when flying or boarding a ship. It is lightweight, easy to roll and large enough to be useful without feeling bulky.

Why We Like the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On

The biggest thing we like about the Maxlite 5 line is that it feels practical. These are not flashy suitcases, but they are light, easy to roll and roomy for their size. The 21-inch version works well as a carry-on bag for flying to a cruise port, staying overnight before embarkation or keeping important items with you while your larger checked bag is being handled by the airline or cruise port.

We also like having the matching 25-inch Maxlite 5 checked size. Using the same luggage line for checked bags and carry-ons keeps things simple, and both sizes have worked well for the way we travel.

Why This Size Works Well for Cruises

A carry-on bag is one of the most useful pieces of cruise luggage you can own. Even if you are checking a larger suitcase, you still want a bag that stays with you during travel day and embarkation day.

For us, the 21-inch Maxlite 5 works well because it is large enough to hold the important stuff, but still easy to maneuver through airports, hotels, shuttle stops and cruise terminals. It is also much easier to keep nearby than a larger checked bag.

This size can be a good fit for:

  • Fly-to-cruise trips
  • Pre-cruise hotel stays
  • Embarkation day essentials
  • Medication, documents, valuables and electronics
  • A change of clothes in case checked luggage is delayed
  • Short trips where you want to avoid checking a bag
  • Travelers who use a larger checked bag plus a carry-on

Lightweight and Easy to Handle

According to Travelpro, the Maxlite 5 21-inch Carry-On Spinner weighs 5.4 lbs. That is one of the main reasons we like it. A lighter carry-on is easier to lift, easier to roll and easier to manage when you are dealing with flights, hotels, cruise transfers and terminal lines.

That matters even more on cruise travel days. You may be moving between your house, airport parking, baggage claim, shuttle buses, hotels and the cruise terminal before you ever get to your cabin. A lightweight carry-on helps make that process easier.

Key Features

  • 21-inch carry-on size – a practical carry-on option for flights, cruise travel and shorter trips.
  • Lightweight design – Travelpro lists this bag at 5.4 lbs.
  • Four spinner wheels – designed to roll upright in multiple directions.
  • Expandable packing space – expands up to 2 inches when you need extra room.
  • Softside construction – flexible and easy to work with when packing.
  • Two exterior pockets – useful for flat, flexible items you want to keep accessible.
  • Interior organization – includes a full-length lid pocket, side accessory pocket and adjustable hold-down straps.
  • Top, side and bottom handles – helpful when lifting the bag into a car, onto a luggage rack or into an overhead bin.
  • PowerScope Lite handle – handle stops at 38 inches and 42.5 inches.

Carry-On Sizing Note

Carry-on sizing can vary by airline, aircraft and route. Travelpro lists this bag with 21″ x 14″ x 9″ case dimensions and 23″ x 14.5″ x 9″ overall dimensions including wheels and handles.

For most cruise travelers flying within the U.S., this is the kind of carry-on size many people look for. Still, it is always smart to check your airline’s current carry-on rules, especially if you are flying a budget airline, a smaller regional aircraft or an international route with stricter carry-on limits.

Softside Carry-On Advantages

We still like softside luggage for a lot of cruise travel. A softside carry-on gives you more flexible packing than many hard-sided bags, and the exterior pockets are genuinely useful on travel day.

We do not use outside pockets for valuables, but they can be handy for things like printed travel paperwork, a light jacket, a luggage tag, a small pouch or other non-valuable items you may want to grab quickly before boarding.

How We Use It

For a typical cruise, we use the 25-inch Maxlite 5 as our main checked bag and the 21-inch Maxlite 5 as our carry-on. That setup gives us a good balance. The checked bag handles most clothes, shoes and bulkier items, while the carry-on stays with us.

In the carry-on, we like to keep:

  • Passports and IDs
  • Cruise boarding documents
  • Medication
  • Electronics and chargers
  • Valuables
  • A change of clothes
  • Basic toiletries
  • Anything we would not want separated from during travel day

That last part is important. Even when we are checking luggage, we do not put essentials in a checked bag. If an airline delays luggage or if cruise terminal luggage delivery takes a while, the carry-on gives us what we need to get through the day.

Cruise Packing Tips for This Bag

  • Use the carry-on for your most important items, not just overflow packing.
  • Keep medication, documents, valuables and electronics with you.
  • Pack a change of clothes in case checked luggage is delayed.
  • Use packing cubes or small pouches to keep the interior organized.
  • Use exterior pockets for flat, flexible, non-valuable items.
  • Be careful with the expansion zipper if you need to meet airline carry-on size limits.
  • Pair it with a checked bag if you are packing for a longer cruise.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The 21-inch Maxlite 5 is a carry-on spinner, so it is best for travelers who want rolling luggage rather than a backpack or duffel. It is easy to roll on smooth airport and cruise terminal floors, but like most spinner bags, it is not designed for rough sidewalks, cobblestones or uneven pavement.

The expansion feature is useful, especially when coming home with extra items, but expansion can make a carry-on more likely to push size limits. If you are flying, check your airline’s rules and use the expansion feature with that in mind.

Who This Bag Is Best For

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch carry-on is best for cruisers who want a lightweight, practical rolling carry-on from a well-known luggage brand. It makes a lot of sense for fly-to-cruise trips, pre-cruise hotel stays, shorter trips and travelers who like using a carry-on alongside a larger checked bag.

It is also a good fit if you already use or are considering the 25-inch Maxlite 5 checked bag. We like the combination of the 21-inch carry-on and 25-inch checked bag because it covers most of our cruise travel needs without feeling oversized or complicated.

Final Thoughts

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch carry-on is our go-to carry-on bag for cruise travel. We own these bags, use them ourselves and like them enough that Travelpro has become our regular luggage brand.

For us, the appeal is simple: it is lightweight, practical, easy to roll and useful for the things we want to keep with us on travel day. If you are looking for a carry-on bag for fly-to-cruise trips, pre-cruise hotels, embarkation day or general travel, this is one we are comfortable recommending based on real use.

We own the Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bag and like it very much. In fact, Travelpro has become our go-to luggage brand. We both use the Maxlite 5 25-inch size as our regular checked bags, and we also use the 21-inch Maxlite 5 bags as our carry-ons.

For cruise travel, that combination has worked very well for us. The 25-inch checked bag gives us enough room for a real cruise packing list without jumping up to an oversized suitcase, while the Maxlite 5 design keeps the bag relatively light and easy to handle through airports, hotels, cruise terminals and cruise cabins.

Why We Like the Travelpro Maxlite 5

The biggest thing we like about the Maxlite 5 line is that it feels practical. These are not flashy suitcases, but they are light, easy to roll and roomy without being awkward. The 25-inch version is large enough for a weeklong cruise, extra outfits, shoes, toiletries and cooler-weather layers, but it still feels much more manageable than a huge checked bag.

We also like having the matching 21-inch Maxlite 5 carry-on size. Using the same luggage line for checked bags and carry-ons keeps things simple, and both sizes have worked well for the way we travel.

Why This Size Works Well for Cruises

A 25-inch checked bag is a nice middle ground for cruise travel. It gives you more room than a carry-on, but it does not jump all the way up to the largest checked suitcase size. That matters because huge suitcases can be harder to lift, easier to overpack and more annoying to store in a cruise cabin.

For us, the 25-inch Maxlite 5 hits the sweet spot. It has enough room for a normal cruise wardrobe, but it still feels manageable at the airport, at the hotel and at the cruise terminal.

This size can be a good fit for:

  • 7-night cruises
  • Fly-to-cruise trips
  • Alaska cruises with bulkier layers
  • Europe cruises with pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel stays
  • Back-to-back cruises
  • Cruisers who pack extra outfits, shoes or formal night clothing

Lightweight Without Feeling Too Small

According to Travelpro, the Maxlite 5 Medium Check-In Spinner weighs 6.8 lbs. That is one of the reasons we like it. When you are flying to a cruise port, the empty weight of your suitcase matters. The heavier the bag is before you pack it, the less room you have before hitting airline checked bag weight limits.

A lighter checked bag gives you more flexibility for real-world packing. Clothes, shoes, toiletries, hair tools, sunscreen, rain jackets, souvenirs and cruise extras all add up quickly. Starting with a lighter bag helps.

Key Features

  • 25-inch checked-medium size – a practical checked bag size for weeklong cruises and longer trips.
  • Lightweight design – Travelpro lists this bag at 6.8 lbs.
  • Four spinner wheels – designed to roll upright in multiple directions.
  • Expandable packing space – expands up to 2 inches when you need extra room.
  • Softside construction – flexible and easy to work with when packing.
  • Exterior front pocket – useful for flat, flexible items you want to keep accessible before checking the bag.
  • Interior organization – includes interior pockets and hold-down straps.
  • Top, side and bottom handles – helpful when lifting the bag into a car, onto a luggage rack or out from under a cruise cabin bed.

Softside vs Hardside for Cruises

Hard-sided luggage is popular, but we still like softside luggage for a lot of cruise travel. The biggest advantage is flexibility. A softside bag can be a little more forgiving when you are packing around shoes, packing cubes, jackets, toiletry bags and last-minute extras.

The exterior pocket is also useful. We do not use it for valuables, but it can be handy for flat or flexible items before the bag gets checked. Think luggage tags, printed paperwork, a lightweight jacket or other non-valuable items you may want to access before handing the bag over.

How We Use It

For a typical cruise, the 25-inch Maxlite 5 works as our main checked bag. Then we use the 21-inch Maxlite 5 as a carry-on. That setup gives us a good balance: the checked bag handles the bulk of our clothes and shoes, while the carry-on can hold cruise documents, medication, valuables, electronics, a change of clothes and anything we do not want to risk being separated from.

That last part is important. Even with a good checked bag, you should not pack essentials in luggage that may be checked with an airline or handed over to cruise port luggage handlers. Keep medications, passports, IDs, boarding documents, valuables, chargers and a change of clothes with you.

Cruise Packing Tips for This Bag

  • Use packing cubes to organize clothes by category, person or day.
  • Pack heavier items like shoes toward the wheel end of the suitcase.
  • Use the expansion zipper carefully, especially if you are flying.
  • Weigh the packed bag before leaving for the airport.
  • Use a bright luggage tag or luggage strap so your bag is easier to spot.
  • Keep documents, medication, electronics and valuables in your carry-on or personal item.
  • Unpack once onboard, then store the suitcase under the cruise cabin bed if space allows.

Things to Consider Before Buying

This is a checked bag, not a carry-on. If you are trying to cruise with carry-on luggage only, this is not the right size. The Maxlite 5 line does include smaller carry-on options, and we use the 21-inch size for that purpose.

Also remember that expandable luggage can be easy to overpack. The extra room is useful, especially on the way home, but it can push you closer to airline weight limits. A small luggage scale is a smart add-on if you fly to your cruise port.

Who This Bag Is Best For

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bag is best for cruisers who want a lightweight, practical checked suitcase from a well-known luggage brand. It makes a lot of sense for weeklong cruises, fly-to-cruise trips, Alaska cruises, longer vacations and travelers who want more room than a carry-on without moving up to a huge checked bag.

It is probably not the best choice for strict carry-on-only travelers or people who prefer hard-sided luggage. But for the way we cruise and travel, it has been a very good fit.

Final Thoughts

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bag is our go-to checked suitcase for cruise travel. We own these bags, use them ourselves and like them enough that we also use the 21-inch Maxlite 5 carry-on bags.

For us, the appeal is simple: they are lightweight, practical, easy to roll and big enough for cruise packing without feeling oversized. If you are looking for a checked bag for fly-to-cruise trips, weeklong cruises or general travel, this is one we are comfortable recommending based on real use

Bottom line: if you like hardside luggage but miss the convenience of an outside pocket, this LEVEL8 Grace expandable carry-on is a practical option to compare against more traditional carry-on suitcases.

personalized luggage tags

When it came time to replace luggage tags I decided to look for personalized options and landed on these. I’m very happy with them. Since they’re metal they’re heavy duty compared to all the other luggage tags I’ve used. They also come with beefy stainless steel loops to affix them on your luggage. Beyond choosing the color of the tags themselves you can choose the color of the wire loops and you can have them print your name on both sides of the tag.

I went with a 4 pack of blue for easy visibility and had them print my info on both sides. I did not put my address, because… I may move before I have to replace these. Instead I opted for last name, email and phone number.

Personalized Metal Luggage Tags with Stainless Steel Wire Loops Pack of 4 – affiliate link, note that multiple variations of this product may be available, as such a different version may appear at this link

Luggage Tag Tips:

  • Put multiple tags on your bag. I put one one each handle. That way if one gets knocked off in transit, you still have another.
  • Put a piece of paper with your contact information inside your luggage. If both tags get knocked off, the airline will still know who’s bag it is.
  • Don’t put your cruise line luggage tag on your bag prior to checking in at the airport. If you’re using just the printed piece of paper… they probably won’t make it. Even if you’re using a luggage tag holder (which I highly recommend) putting these on before the flight puts undo wear and tear on the tag holders.

Cruise Tip Luggage Tags:

I highly recommend cruise luggage tag holders. These are sturdier and more secure than tape or staples. Having these also means you don’t need to carry along… tape or staples. These also keep your tags dry (and readable) in the event of rain. Because your tags are more likely to stay on, you’re less likely to have delayed luggage on the ship. Size of these varies based on cruise line. Look for one that’s compatible with your cruise line.

If you’re flying to your embarkation port I don’t recommend putting cruise tags on your luggage until after your flight. That’s especially true if you’re taping and stapling vs using luggage tags. Luggage tag holders would probably make the flight okay, but, to me, there’s no sense subjecting these to the wear and tear of airline luggage handling.

Print and fold (or cut) your printable luggage tags at home, put them in holders and pack. Put on the night before you cruise and you’ll all set.

What size luggage should I take on my cruise?

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Expandable Luggage with 4 Spinner Wheels, Lightweight Suitcase, Men and Women, Black, Checked-Medium 25-InchPictured: Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside 25-Inch

Disclaimer: Bag size is largely a personal preference type of thing and if you have something that works for you… go ahead and check out our complete list for some more recommendations and tips.

Bag Sizes

The general bag sizes are 29″, 25″ and 21″. That measurement refers to the bag height and can range a little bit. For the medium size bag you’ll see bags from around 24″ to 26″.  Bags in the 29″ and 25″ ranges definitely need to be checked when flying. Bags in the 21″ range can usually be carried on depending on the airline, aircraft and the bag.

Luggage Features and Construction

Beyond size, bags are made from different materials and have different features.

  • Soft side bags – are made from fabric like woven nylon.
  • Hard side bags – are made from hard plastic.

Hard side have the general advantage of being more robust and they can be wiped down for cleaning. Soft wide bags are more expandable and can have zipped outside pockets.

Bag features can include rolling wheels (yes!), telescoping handles, extra pockets and compartments and more.

What size luggage should I take on my cruise?

My recommendation is… as small as possible. Figure out what you need – our complete packing list – along the items that will make things a lot easier and get a right-sized bag. Too big equals extra cost and weight and stuff sloshing around as you make your way to your cruise. Too small equal… too small.

Downsides of Bigger Bags

Sure the larger 29″ size checked bags are appealing because you can get so much stuff in them. But, when you get so much stuff in them… you have that much stuff to lug around.

Weight = work. If you use and need all of the stuff, that’s one thing, but what if you can have just as good of a time without the extra stuff?  Why spend part of your vacation lugging around extra stuff you don’t need?

The other thing about huge bags is that it’s tough to actually fill these up without surpassing airline weight limits. If they’re half empty your stuff gets to bounce it’s way around to the next cruise.

When 4″ = 2,481 sq inches

25″ to 29″ sounds like, uh.. 4″. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is. Using Travelpro’s Maxlite 5 as an example the 25″ bag has about 4,950 cubic inches of interior space while the 29″ bag has about… 7,431 cubic inches of interior space. That’s just over 50% usable space. That’s a lot.

For Us, Medium Works Best

Personally we prefer medium sized checked bags in the 25″ range. We both each have one of these or direct from Travelpro.

The fact is people are going on cruises everyday using carry on size bags in the 21″ range. We’re not willing to go that far, but for us, the medium size 25″ bag is a reasonable size for most cruise vacations.
