What Size Luggage Should I Take on a Cruise? 21 vs. 25 vs. 29 Inches

What size suitcase should you take on a cruise? Our general recommendation is to use the smallest bag that comfortably holds what you actually need. For us, that usually means a medium-size checked bag in the 25-inch range. It provides plenty of room for most cruise vacations without becoming unnecessarily large, heavy or difficult to manage.

That doesn’t mean a 25-inch bag is right for everyone. Light packers can absolutely cruise with a carry-on, while longer trips or cruises that require more clothing may justify a larger suitcase. Bag size is ultimately a personal preference, so if you already have something that works well for you, there may be no reason to change.

Common Cruise Luggage Sizes: 21, 25 and 29 Inches

You’ll commonly see luggage described as 21-inch, 25-inch and 29-inch. These numbers generally refer to the approximate height of the suitcase body rather than necessarily representing its exact overall dimensions with wheels and handles included.

• 21-inch: Carry-on-size luggage that may work without checking a bag, depending on the airline, aircraft and exact dimensions.
• 25-inch: Medium checked luggage with substantially more packing room while remaining relatively easy to handle.
• 29-inch: Large checked luggage that provides a lot of space but can become heavy and cumbersome when packed.

What Size Luggage Is Best for a Cruise?

Our recommendation is simple: go as small as you comfortably can. Figure out what you actually need, add the items that will make your trip easier and choose a bag that reasonably holds everything.

A larger bag isn’t automatically better. More space makes it tempting to pack more, and everything you add eventually has to be lifted, rolled, loaded, unloaded and stored.

At the same time, going too small can create its own problems. If you’re stuffing every pocket, sitting on the suitcase to close it or leaving behind things you’ll actually use, moving up one size probably makes sense.

Why We Prefer a 25-Inch Suitcase

For us, the sweet spot is a medium checked suitcase in the 25-inch range. We each use a Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch suitcase.

It gives us considerably more room than a carry-on without getting into the size and weight of a huge suitcase. For most of our cruise vacations, it has proven to be a very practical compromise between packing space and portability.

Downsides of a 29-Inch Suitcase

A 29-inch checked bag can look appealing because you can fit an enormous amount of stuff inside. The downside is that once you fill all that space, you have an enormous amount of stuff to move around.

Weight equals work. You’ll have to get the suitcase into and out of vehicles, through airports and hotels, to the cruise terminal and eventually back home again. If you genuinely need everything in it, that’s one thing. If the extra space just encourages extra packing, you’re creating more work for yourself.

Large bags can also make airline baggage limits more of a concern. A suitcase with lots of unused capacity can still be physically large, while a completely full one can become very heavy. Always check your airline’s current size and weight limits before flying.

Four Inches Makes a Surprisingly Big Difference

The difference between a 25-inch and 29-inch suitcase sounds small. After all, we’re only talking about four inches of nominal height.

But luggage gets taller, wider and deeper as you move up in size. Using the Travelpro Maxlite 5 as an example, the 25-inch suitcase is rated at 91 liters of capacity while the 29-inch version is rated at 142 liters.

That’s about 56% more published capacity in the 29-inch bag.

The difference between the 21-inch and 25-inch bags is even more dramatic. Travelpro rates those at 46 and 91 liters respectively, meaning the medium suitcase provides nearly twice the published capacity of the carry-on.

So don’t let the difference between “21,” “25” and “29” fool you. You’re choosing between substantially different amounts of luggage.

Can You Cruise With Only a Carry-On?

Absolutely. A carry-on-size suitcase can be enough for a cruise, especially for shorter trips, warm-weather itineraries and travelers who are comfortable packing light.

Using a smaller bag also means less luggage to move around and may allow you to avoid checking a bag when flying, depending on the airline’s rules and the exact dimensions of your suitcase.

The important part is to check the airline’s published carry-on limits rather than assuming every bag marketed as a “carry-on” will be accepted everywhere. Wheels and handles normally count toward the overall dimensions, and expanding a suitcase can also change whether it meets a particular airline’s limits.

Don’t Forget About Cruise Cabin Storage

Your suitcase doesn’t disappear after you board the ship. You’ll need somewhere to keep it for the duration of the cruise.

Depending on your cabin and suitcase, luggage can often be stored under the bed or tucked into available storage space after you unpack. A smaller suitcase is naturally easier to get out of the way.

That’s another reason not to automatically choose the largest bag available. Once you’ve unpacked, a huge suitcase can become one more large object competing for space in a relatively compact cruise cabin.

Soft-Side or Hard-Side?

Either soft-side or hard-side luggage can work well for a cruise. Soft-side bags often provide exterior pockets and expandable storage, while hard-side luggage offers a rigid shell that is generally easy to wipe clean. Features such as spinner wheels, a good telescoping handle, useful compartments and overall weight are likely to matter more than simply choosing one construction style over the other.

Bottom Line

Take the smallest suitcase that comfortably fits what you genuinely need for your cruise. A 21-inch carry-on can be enough for light packers, while a 29-inch suitcase offers a huge amount of room for travelers who truly need it.

For us, a 25-inch checked bag is the best middle ground. It offers significantly more capacity than a carry-on without the bulk and potential weight of a large 29-inch suitcase.
