We own the Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bag and like it very much. In fact, Travelpro has become our go-to luggage brand. We both use the Maxlite 5 25-inch size as our regular checked bags, and we also use the 21-inch Maxlite 5 bags as our carry-ons.
For cruise travel, that combination has worked very well for us. Softside vs Hardside for Cruises
Hard-sided luggage is popular, but we still like softside luggage for a lot of cruise travel. The biggest advantage is flexibility. A softside bag can be a little more forgiving when you are packing around shoes, packing cubes, jackets, toiletry bags and last-minute extras.
The exterior pocket is also useful. We do not use it for valuables, but it can be handy for flat or flexible items before the bag gets checked. Think luggage tags, printed paperwork, a lightweight jacket or other non-valuable items you may want to access before handing the bag over.
How We Use It
For a typical cruise, the 25-inch Maxlite 5 works as our main checked bag. Then we use the 21-inch Maxlite 5 as a carry-on. That setup gives us a good balance: the checked bag handles the bulk of our clothes and shoes, while the carry-on can hold cruise documents, medication, valuables, electronics, a change of clothes and anything we do not want to risk being separated from.
