Royal Caribbean Bans Multi-Plug Adapters and Extension Cords!

Original Publication: September 23, 2024

Updated: May 21, 2025

With their most reason banned items list Royal Caribbean has added multi-plug adapters and extension cords to the items you cannot bring on board. Full list link below.

As a frequent Royal Caribbean cruiser this… rocks my world. I regularly bring one or more multi plug adapters when I cruise.

I’ve been a big advocate of using the 220 European Type C adapter on board this change makes that even more important. It allows you to squeeze out another adapter. This used to be more important on older ships and less important on newer ships but… This changes all that. With multi-plug adapters being banned a Type C adapter makes more sense than ever.

A few other thoughts…

  • The way I read it multi USB outlet blocks are NOT banned. Since a lot of the gear we take on board is USB this could be a good work around.
  • As stated previously using the 220 European style outlet is more important than ever.
  • A USB charging bank is another potential way to decrease the impact of this change. Charge during the day, unplug at night to free up an outlet and use the battery bank to charge USB devices.

Update 9/30/2024:

@NiceCarFather reached out to Royal Caribbean on X (connect to cruise packing list on x) to ask if a plug + USB outlets would be allowed. It looks like he references this Anker Travel Plug in the back and forth. The Royal Caribbean rep surprisingly (at least to me!) says that this would not be allowed because it has an outlet and additional USB ports. Earlier in the conversation he says a multi USB block is allowed.

So, at this point my understanding is that if an adapter has an AC outlet, that’s all that’s allowed. One single AC outlet. An adapter can have multiple USB ports as long as no AC outlet is present.

Update 10/7/2024:

Royal has updated their prohibited items policy to include some additional clarification. As of today this section reads:

Electrical Extension Cords – including power strips/surge protected strips and multi-plug outlets.
We do allow consumer type power conversion device USB charger (multi-plug blocks on which the outputs are for USB cables). Note: Devices must be stamped with US/Europe recognized Conformance Marking to demonstrate compliance with Electrical Safety standards.

So, there previous communication on social media seems to be correct. If it has an AC outlet, that’s all it can have a single AC outlet. Multi outlet USB only charger blocks are allowed.

Update 5/21/2025: A complicating factor

Pictured: TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter, International Power Adapter

I just realized a complicating factor in all of this that many of you may have already realized. We have our first European cruise booked for this summer. Yay!

In planning I picked up the pictured international adapter. Like many we’re going to do additional vacationing in Europe in addition to the cruise. In the interest of packing as light as possible I landed on this multi country, multi outlet multi plug adapter. But… we’re sailing on Royal Caribbean and it’s solidly banned.

I’m not going to take a bag of wires and adapters to do all the work this thing will do so my only choice is to take it and get it confiscated, hoping that it isn’t lost in the process.

Why a Power Bank is a must pack item for trips to Europe

Pictured: Anker 621 Magnetic Portable Charger (MagGo), 5,000mAh Wireless Power Bank

We just returned for our first European cruise.  It was… fabulous. We spent several days in London ahead of the cruise. Visited Hamburg Germany, Bruges Belgium, Copenhagen Denmark and Oslo Norway on the cruise. Finally we spent two days in Paris prior to coming home. It was amazing!

In our extensive preparations for this trip we spent a lot of time deciding what to pack. We wanted to keep the size and weight of our luggage down to make the trip easier. We cut deep leaving a lot of things behind that we would normally take for something like a Caribbean cruise.

When we got to the subject of a power bank I said to my wife… we don’t need it. My laptop functions as a power bank. The plane will have outlets and everyplace we go will have outlets. Let’s save the weight and leave it behind.

She (very wisely) said… no, I’m taking it.

Fast forward to day one of our time in London and it’s very clear my phone is not going to make it through the day. I switched to low power mode and eventually moved to her phone for directions, trying to saving the last bits of battery on my phone to be able to access tickets and our itinerary.

We were constantly using phones for directions, to view our itinerary and to access tickets. I think there’s something else at play too. Something about a US phone being in Europe. I think my phone was constantly looking for Verizon towers to save Verizon roaming fees. That’s a theory, but whatever was happening, I went through battery at an astounding rate.

After the first day, I carried out battery bank every single day and used it every single day. I’m going to call a power bank a must have for European trips.

Unidapt European Travel Plug Adapter: Unlock the 220V Outlet on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises

Royal Caribbean cruise 220v plug adapter

Unidapt European Travel Plug Adapter: Unlock the 220V Outlet on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises

I’ve been a big proponent of using the 220-volt outlet in cruise cabins. A small European plug adapter is cheap, takes up almost no room and can magically give you access to another outlet that might otherwise go unused.

The Unidapt European travel plug adapter is especially interesting for Royal Caribbean cruisers because it provides one North American-style AC receptacle without adding a cord, USB ports or multiple AC outlets.

Important: This is a plug adapter, not a voltage converter. Only connect devices specifically rated to operate at the voltage supplied by the cruise ship outlet.

Why Use the 220V Cruise Cabin Outlet?

Many cruise cabins have a limited number of conveniently placed outlets. Newer ships have generally improved in this area, but older ships and some cabin layouts can still leave several travelers competing for the same plugs.

To accommodate international passengers, many cruise cabins also have a European-style outlet. For North American travelers, that outlet may sit unused for the entire cruise.

A compact Type C adapter can turn it into a usable North American-style receptacle for a compatible charger or electronic device. That does not increase the number of devices one circuit can safely power, but it can make an otherwise unusable outlet available.

Cabin outlet types and voltages can vary by ship and stateroom. Check the outlet and your device before connecting anything.

Royal Caribbean’s Multi-Plug Rule

Royal Caribbean currently prohibits electrical extension cords, power strips and multi-plug outlets. That makes many popular cruise power adapters problematic, including compact adapters that combine several AC outlets with USB charging ports.

The Unidapt adapter has a much simpler design:

  • One European Type C plug
  • One North American-style AC receptacle
  • No extension cord
  • No additional AC outlets
  • No built-in USB ports

Because it provides only a single AC receptacle, it does not appear to be a multi-plug outlet. That makes it a much better match for Royal Caribbean’s current wording than adapters that split one outlet into several AC receptacles.

However, no third-party product can be guaranteed admission onboard. Royal Caribbean states that questionable items remain subject to inspection and that ship security has the final say.

Review the cruise line’s current rules before packing: Royal Caribbean Prohibited Items Policy

What About Celebrity Cruises?

Celebrity Cruises’ published prohibited-items information specifically lists electrical extension cords. It does not currently provide the same detailed multi-plug language found in Royal Caribbean’s policy.

The Unidapt adapter remains a simple option for Celebrity cabins equipped with a compatible European-style outlet. It has no cord and does not split the outlet into multiple receptacles.

Policies and their onboard interpretation can change, so check Celebrity’s current prohibited-items information before sailing.

Adapter vs. Voltage Converter

This distinction is extremely important: The Unidapt does not convert 220 or 230 volts into 120 volts. It only changes the physical plug configuration.

Many phone, tablet, camera and laptop chargers are designed for worldwide use. Look for wording similar to this on the charger:

Input: 100–240V, 50/60Hz

A charger with that input range is generally designed to accept both North American and European voltages. Do not assume that every electronic device is dual voltage.

Be especially careful with hair dryers, curling tools and other high-wattage appliances. A device marked only for 110 or 120 volts should not be connected directly to a 220 or 230-volt outlet through this adapter.

Check the label, product specifications or manufacturer documentation for every device you plan to connect.

Why This Unidapt Adapter Makes Sense

The Unidapt package currently includes four individual adapters. That gives you extras for other luggage, international travel or future cruises without requiring much packing space.

According to the manufacturer, these adapters:

  • Use the common European Type C plug configuration
  • Provide one North American-style receptacle
  • Are also compatible with many Type E and Type F outlets
  • Work only as plug adapters and do not convert voltage
  • Should be used only with devices rated for the available voltage

The lack of extra features is the main attraction here. On another cruise line, a multi-outlet adapter with USB ports may be more convenient. For Royal Caribbean, the Unidapt’s basic one-plug-to-one-outlet design may be exactly what makes it useful.

It is also handy for regular international travel. Just remember that Type C is not the outlet used everywhere. For example, the United Kingdom and Ireland generally use Type G outlets.

Another Option: A USB-Only Charger

A lot of the electronics we bring on cruises charge through USB. Royal Caribbean’s current rules make an exception for qualifying device and USB chargers carrying recognized U.S. or European conformity markings.

A European USB charging block can therefore be another useful way to take advantage of the cabin’s Type C outlet. Because it has USB outputs but no AC receptacle, it avoids the multi-plug AC outlet issue.

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for Cruises: 5-Port Type C Charger (Use the 220 Outlet on Your Next Cruise)

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for CruisesPicture from my Hands on Review of this great charging block

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for Cruises: 5-Port Type C Charger

Cruise cabins can have a frustrating shortage of convenient power outlets. One of my favorite ways to add useful charging capacity is to take advantage of the European Type C outlet found in many cruise ship cabins.

The LiFiYiRc European USB Charger plugs directly into that outlet and gives you five USB charging ports without adding another AC outlet.

European USB charger for cruises

I’ve personally used and tested this exact charger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. It worked well for turning the cabin’s European outlet into a convenient charging station for several devices.

For photos and more detailed testing, see my hands-on review of the LiFiYiRc European USB charger.

Five USB Charging Ports

The LiFiYiRc charger combines USB-C and USB-A charging in one compact device:

  • 2 USB-C ports
  • 3 USB-A ports
  • PD fast-charging support
  • QC 3.0 fast-charging support
  • European Type C plug
  • 100-240V AC input

The charger I tested is labeled as a 65W Fast Charger. Individual ports are marked PD20W, QC3.0, PD15W, 3.1A and 3.1A.

Why I Like Type C USB Chargers for Cruises

Many cruise cabins include a European-style outlet that American travelers may otherwise leave completely unused.

A Type C USB charger turns that outlet into another dedicated charging location for phones, watches, tablets, headphones, power banks and other USB-powered travel gear.

That’s especially useful when several people are sharing a cabin or when you travel with a growing collection of rechargeable devices.

For more on this strategy, see my guide to making use of the 220V European outlet on a cruise ship.

A Must-Pack Charger for My Cruises

This has become one of my must-pack charging accessories for cruises. I’ve used this LiFiYiRc charger on multiple sailings to take advantage of the European-style outlet in the cabin and add a convenient charging location for several devices.

One of the ships where I specifically documented using it was Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. I plugged it directly into the European cabin outlet, connected several charging cables and used it throughout the cruise.

I even used it to provide power to my Dell XPS laptop. My laptop normally uses a 130W charger, so charging was slower and this isn’t a replacement for its full-power factory charger. Still, it was able to provide power in a pinch.

For me, the biggest benefit is simply having another dependable place to charge devices. Instead of leaving the European outlet unused, this charger turns it into five USB ports and helps take some of the pressure off the other outlets in the cabin.

You can see photos and more detailed testing from one of my cruises in my full LiFiYiRc hands-on review.

USB-C and USB-A in the Same Charger

Another reason I like this configuration is that it includes both newer USB-C ports and traditional USB-A ports.

Most of us are gradually moving toward USB-C, but plenty of travel accessories still use USB-A charging cables.

With two USB-C and three USB-A ports, this charger works well with a mix of newer and older charging cables without requiring multiple charging blocks.

A Good Option for Royal Caribbean’s Current Outlet Rules

Royal Caribbean’s electrical-device rules are important when choosing a cruise charger. Multi-plug AC adapters and devices that add additional electrical outlets can be prohibited.

This LiFiYiRc charger is different because it does not provide an additional AC outlet. It plugs into the European Type C outlet and provides USB charging ports only.

That’s one reason I like this style of charger for Royal Caribbean cruises.

For the latest policy details and examples of chargers and adapters that may or may not qualify, see my guide to Royal Caribbean’s multi-plug adapter rules.

Cruise-line policies can change, and final approval of any electrical device is up to the cruise line and onboard security.

Using a 220V Cruise Cabin Outlet

One potential point of confusion when using a European cruise cabin outlet is voltage.

When you use a simple plug adapter to connect an AC-powered US device to a 220/240V outlet, you need to make sure the device itself supports that voltage.

The LiFiYiRc charger I tested is labeled for 100-240V AC input. Your phone, watch or other USB device connects to the charger’s USB output rather than directly to the ship’s AC power.

That makes a USB charger like this a simple way to put the European outlet to work.

For conventional plug adapters and AC-powered devices, always verify voltage compatibility before connecting anything to a 220/240V outlet.

Bottom Line

The LiFiYiRc European USB Charger is a simple way to get more usefulness out of the European outlet in a cruise cabin.

It provides two USB-C ports and three USB-A ports, doesn’t add another AC outlet and has worked well for me during actual onboard use.

If the European outlet in your cabin would otherwise go unused, a charger like this can turn it into a very useful multi-device charging location.

For onboard photos, additional testing and more observations from my experience using it, see the complete hands-on LiFiYiRc USB charger review.

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets + 3 USB Ports – Use the 220 Outlet On Your Next Cruise

European Travel Plug Adapter, US to Europe Plug Adapter, International Itly Travel Plug Adapter with 2 Outlets 3 USB Ports(2 USB C), Type C Power Adapter to Italy Spain France Portugal Iceland Germany

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets + 3 USB Ports

When you’re traveling internationally, a simple plug adapter can do more than just make your American plug fit a European outlet. The right adapter can also give you additional places to charge the phones, watches, cameras, power banks and other electronics that tend to travel with us.

That can be especially useful on a cruise. Many cruise cabins have a European-style outlet in addition to the standard North American outlet. With the right adapter, that otherwise-unused outlet can become another valuable charging location.

The HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter turns one compatible European outlet into two standard North American-style AC outlets along with three USB charging ports.

It is also compact and weighs about 2.4 ounces, making it an easy addition to a travel electronics bag without taking up much luggage space.

5 Charging Connections in One Small Adapter

The HANYCONY adapter provides five places to connect devices:

  • 2 standard North American AC outlets
  • 2 USB-C ports
  • 1 USB-A port

That combination is particularly useful if you’re traveling with a mix of older and newer electronics. You can connect conventional chargers to the AC outlets while plugging USB cables directly into the adapter.

The USB ports provide up to 15.5 watts total, making them useful for everyday devices such as phones, watches, earbuds and other smaller electronics.

This isn’t a high-powered USB-C laptop charger, however. If you need fast USB-C charging for a laptop or another higher-powered device, you’ll probably still want to bring the appropriate charger.

Made for European Type C Outlets

This version uses the familiar European Type C two-pin plug. It is designed for travel to many popular European destinations including Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Greece and Iceland.

It is important to remember that Europe doesn’t use one universal electrical plug.

In particular, this Type C model is not the correct adapter for the UK or Ireland. Those destinations generally use the larger Type G plug. Other destinations can also use different outlet standards, so it’s worth checking the plug type used at each stop on your itinerary.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Useful for Cruise Ship Cabins

One reason European plug adapters can be particularly useful for cruise travel is that many cruise cabins include a European-style 220V outlet in addition to a North American outlet.

If you don’t have an adapter, that outlet may go completely unused. With a compatible adapter, it can become another useful charging location for your travel electronics.

I’ve covered this strategy in more detail in Cruise Ship Power Solutions: Making Use of the 220 Volt Cabin Outlet.

The HANYCONY does not include surge protection, which is an important consideration for cruise travel. However, cruise lines can also place restrictions on adapters that provide multiple AC outlets, so the lack of surge protection does not automatically mean an adapter is permitted onboard.

This post may contain affiliate links. We may make a commission when you use our links. This will never cost you extra. Thank you for supporting Cruise Packing List!

This Is a Plug Adapter, Not a Voltage Converter

This is one of the most important things to understand about international travel adapters.

The HANYCONY changes the physical plug configuration. It does not change the voltage coming from the outlet.

If you plug it into a 220-240V European outlet, the AC outlets on the adapter are still supplying that higher voltage.

Many modern electronics chargers are designed for worldwide voltage and are labeled something similar to INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz. Those devices can generally be used with the appropriate plug adapter.

A 120V-only appliance is different. Do not assume that a hair dryer, curling appliance or other high-powered device can safely be plugged into a European outlet simply because this adapter makes the plug fit.

Always check the voltage rating printed on the device or its charger before connecting it.

Bottom Line

The HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter packs two AC outlets, two USB-C ports and one USB-A port into a compact adapter.

It’s a useful option for European travel and can also help make use of European-style outlets found in many cruise cabins.

Just keep cruise-line rules in mind. In particular, because this model provides two AC outlets, it is not a good choice for Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises under their current multi-plug rules.

Important Power Adapter Rules for Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Cruises

TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter, 140W GaN, Black | International Plug Adaptor, 3 USB C and 1 USB A Charging Ports, Worldwide Power Outlet, US to Europe UK AUS Ireland

If you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises, be especially careful when choosing power adapters and charging devices. Royal Caribbean prohibits extension cords, power strips and multi-plug outlets. Under its current guidance, an allowed adapter can have one AC outlet plus up to four USB-A or USB-C charging ports. Devices with multiple AC outlets remain prohibited.

That means the HANYCONY adapter featured in this post is not a good choice for Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises. Although it does not have surge protection and its USB ports are useful for travel, it has two AC outlets. That second AC outlet makes it a multi-plug device under Royal Caribbean’s current rules.

See: Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

If you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity, here are two alternatives we’ve specifically looked at:

Cruise-line policies can change and electrical items remain subject to inspection by ship security, so check the current rules before sailing.

Hands on Review: European Type C Fast USB Charger by LiFiYiRc… Use the 220 Outlet on Your Next Cruise!

Many cruise cabins have a common problem… lack of outlets. This has generally gotten better with newer ships, but can still be an issue. Even newer ships that have more cabin outlets, the outlets can be placed in such a way as to limit their usability. If two outlets are too close together… you can only use one.

To accommodate European travelers cruise lines will often include one or more 220 volt outlets. If you’re used to using three prong 120 volt electronics this outlet will most likely go unused.

One way to stretch out the outlets on your next cruise is to… use the 220 volt outlet.

This is a hands on look at the LiFiYiRc European Type C Mult Port Charging Block PD20W

This will allow you to make use of a European Type C outlet on your next cruise! Because it’s a USB charger there’s no need to check for AC 220/240 compatibility. That’s a requirement for many of the adapters featured on CPL. For lots more about this see: Cruise Ship Power Solutions – Making Use of the 220 Volt Cabin Outlet On Your Next Cruise

Attention Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises:

This was reviewed, in part, on Royal Caribbean ships prior to their change in policy, banning multi-plug adapters. See article below. The way I interpret the policy, this should still be allowed since it does not have an AC outlet.

A look at the ports. Unfortunately I had this upside down when I took this photo. Oh well… guess I have to go back on Odyssey! 🙂  If this were right side up the ports would be labeled PD20W, QC3.0, PD15W, 3.1A and 3.1A

Hey look…. these two prongs match the European style outlet on Odyssey!

Plugged in!

Loaded up with cables charging stuff!  The shows two 4 in 1 style USB charging cables. One in USB-A mode and one is USB-C mode (charging my laptop) along with a standard USB-A cable.

This can charge multiple items up to and including compatible laptops. My Dell XPS laptop has a 130 watt charger so this 65 watt charger is under powered although it was able to charge it at a slower rate. I wouldn’t leave the laptop charger at home, but this would work in a pinch.

Conclusions

This is a relatively cheap upgrade that makes cabin life easier. European type C devices have become must-pack items for all our cruises. Utilizing the European style outlet seems like magic. If you don’t have a European type C charger of some sort in your cruise gear, it’s a slam dunk. There are a number of styles to choose from. This is a great choice because of the ubiquity of USB devices and ease of use.

Hands on Review: Premium Cruise Card Lanyard – A Smart Upgrade for Your Cruise

Premium Cruise Card Lanyard – A Small Upgrade That Makes a Big Difference

Your cruise card is something you’ll reach for dozens of times a day. It’s your ID, room key, payment method, and access pass for nearly everything onboard. Most cruisers toss theirs on a cheap lanyard and call it good… but after a few days of constant use, those bargain options start to feel flimsy and annoying. A premium cruise card lanyard is a simple upgrade that adds comfort, durability, and everyday convenience. With a retractable reel, secure holder, and better construction, it turns something you carry all day into gear that actually works with you instead of against you.

Most Lanyards are… Super Cheap

One thing that cruise lanyards seem to have in common (at least in my opinion) is that they’re cheap. Both cheap in price and cheaply made. Sometimes a small upgrade that costs a few dollars more can make a big difference.

It’s with that idea in mind that I went looking for a higher quality lanyard…. there must be a better way! 🙂

Conclusions

There are countless cruise lanyards out there, and most of them technically work — but many feel disposable after a few days of heavy use. This premium cruise card lanyard is a noticeable step up. It’s sturdier, more comfortable, and packed with features that actually make daily life onboard easier. The retractable reel, secure holder, and quick-release design solve small frustrations you don’t realize you have until they’re gone.

It costs a little more than the bargain-bin options, but it’s still inexpensive in the grand scheme of a cruise — and you’ll use it constantly. For something you wear all day, every day of your trip, the upgrade is absolutely worth it.

More About Travel Routers:

Travel routers are generally small devices that allow you to create a small Wi-Fi network.

The problem with traditional Wi-Fi routers is that they don’t know how to handle “captive networks”. Captive networks are networks that require you to log in before you can access the internet. Many publicly available WiFi networks are considered captive networks. That includes most hotels and cruise ships.

Travel routers are (or at least should be) designed to handle captive networks. You basically log in to the router through a web browser and then log into the captive network using the router’s settings.

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets – Use the 220 Outlet On Your Next Cruise

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets – Use the 220 Outlet On Your Next Cruise

Problem Solved… MagSafe Wallet for Your Ship Card!

One thing you always need when you’re on a cruise ship is your… ship card. It functions are your room key, allows you to pay for things, lets you access drink packages, lets you access reservations, acts as an ID of sorts, gets you back on the ship and more.

Beyond your ship card, while you’re walking around onboard, you may not need a whole lot more. Maybe a cell phone.  So, how do you keep track of your card and the few things you may want to carry?

A Lanyard is one option and works for some people. Personally I don’t want anything extra around my neck and I’d like the ability to carry a couple more things (maybe some cash) without having to dig in the lanyard.

Another option is a Phone Card Holder. That allows you to keep your ship card right with your phone. This is a big improvement, in my book, everything in one place, compact and easy to keep track of. But, these are adhesive based and need to be semi-permanently installed on a phone or phone case. My solution up until now was to keep an extra phone case with a phone holder installed for use while cruising.

How about… a MagSafe wallet?  These work with compatible iOS devices and compatible Android devices (with the help of a case). They can be easily affixed (and removed) as needed. Whammo!

Here’s a look at these MagSafe wallets for using on a cruise.

Credit for the original idea (the stick on card holder) goes to Emma of Emma cruises. She came up with the original “put your card with your phone” idea. Thanks Emma!  If you have a MagSafe capable phone or phone case, I think this is a great upgrade to the stick on holder.

I’ve used this on multiple cruises and it’s worked well. It’s now a must pack item for me!

If you don’t have a MagSafe capable phone, consider… COCASES Phone Card Holder

Does MagSafe work with Android phones?

The technology the allows magnetic accessories to work is Qi wireless charging. Newer iPhone and Android phones often times have this technology built in. MagSafe is a registered Apple trademark. As such you’re probably not going to see an Android marketed as having MagSafe.

The Android implementation of Qi wireless charging is a little bit different than iPhone. The result is that the magnet can be weaker. A solution to this is to get a MagSafe compatible ring sticker or case. This helps to increase magnetic strength.

See: How to Add MagSafe to Android for some more information

MagSafe capable iPhones do not need these add ons.

This will allow you to make use of a European Type C outlet on your next cruise! Note that this is not a voltage converter. Many electronics are designed to operate in the 220 volt range. Lack of power solutions in cruise ship cabins

What style is the 220 volt outlet on cruise ships?

European Type C seems to be the standard style on cruise ships. This may vary, but it seems to be fairly standard.

Voltage Adapters vs Voltage Converters

Voltage adapters are generally compact and reasonably priced. Adapters only adapt the plug. They do not convert 220v to 120v. Voltage converters actually step down voltage from 220v to 120v. Those are generally bulkier and more expensive.

Will my 120v devices work with an adapter?

A 120v device (only) device will not work on a 220v outlet with an adapter, but… many of your devices may actually be rated for both 120v and 220v…

Dual Voltage and World Wide Voltage

Many devices are actually setup to use either voltage. As an example take a look at this laptop power charger. It’s designed to accept 100 volts up to 240 volts.

Another example, as of this writing… “Apple USB power adapters are designed for use with power sources rated to provide 100V AC to 240V AC at 50Hz to 60Hz.” via About Apple USB Power Adapters

Another example Anker’s model A9123 which I own and use on cruises. It is designed to accept 100 volts up to 240 volts.

Many three prong devices are designed to work at a range of voltages including 220v. Those devices will work with an outlet adapter. As three prong cord users we just don’t think about it much. To see if your device is compatible with 220v check the label, product specifications or ask the manufacturer.

What about USB?

220v adapters that have USB ports should step down power to provide USB range DC power.

Example – This USB charger accepts 100-240V AC input and outputs DC 5V

More About Travel Routers:

Travel routers are generally small devices that allow you to create a small Wi-Fi network.

The problem with traditional Wi-Fi routers is that they don’t know how to handle “captive networks”. Captive networks are networks that require you to log in before you can access the internet. Many publicly available WiFi networks are considered captive networks. That includes most hotels and cruise ships.

Travel routers are (or at least should be) designed to handle captive networks. You basically log in to the router through a web browser and then log into the captive network using the router’s settings.
