New Updates… Royal Caribbean Bans Multi-Plug Adapters and Extension Cords – Royal has provided additional clarification

Original Publication: September 23, 2024

Updated: October 7, 2024

With their most reason banned items list Royal Caribbean has added multi-plug adapters and extension cords to the items you cannot bring on board. Full list link below.

As a frequent Royal Caribbean cruiser this… rocks my world. I regularly bring one or more multi plug adapters when I cruise.

I’ve been a big advocate of using the 220 European Type C adapter on board this change makes that even more important. It allows you to squeeze out another adapter. This used to be more important on older ships and less important on newer ships but… This changes all that. With multi-plug adapters being banned a Type C adapter makes more sense than ever.

A few other thoughts…

  • The way I read it multi USB outlet blocks are NOT banned. Since a lot of the gear we take on board is USB this could be a good work around.
  • As stated previously using the 220 European style outlet is more important than ever.
  • A USB charging bank is another potential way to decrease the impact of this change. Charge during the day, unplug at night to free up an outlet and use the battery bank to charge USB devices.

Update 9/30/2024:

@NiceCarFather reached out to Royal Caribbean on X (connect to cruise packing list on x) to ask if a plug + USB outlets would be allowed. It looks like he references this Anker Travel Plug in the back and forth. The Royal Caribbean rep surprisingly (at least to me!) says that this would not be allowed because it has an outlet and additional USB ports. Earlier in the conversation he says a multi USB block is allowed.

So, at this point my understanding is that if an adapter has an AC outlet, that’s all that’s allowed. One single AC outlet. An adapter can have multiple USB ports as long as no AC outlet is present.

Update 10/7/2024:

Royal has updated their prohibited items policy to include some additional clarification. As of today this section reads:

Electrical Extension Cords – including power strips/surge protected strips and multi-plug outlets.
We do allow consumer type power conversion device USB charger (multi-plug blocks on which the outputs are for USB cables). Note: Devices must be stamped with US/Europe recognized Conformance Marking to demonstrate compliance with Electrical Safety standards.

So, there previous communication on social media seems to be correct. If it has an AC outlet, that’s all it can have a single AC outlet. Multi outlet USB only charger blocks are allowed.

Hands on Review: European Type C Adapter USB+Night Light – Use the 220 Outlet on Your Next Cruise

Many cruise cabins have a common problem… lack of outlets. This has generally gotten better with newer ships, but can still be an issue. Even newer ships that have more cabin outlets, the outlets can be placed in such a way as to limit their usability. If two outlets are too close together… you can only use one.

To accommodate European travelers cruise lines will often include one or more 220 volt outlets. If you’re used to using three prong 120 volt electronics this outlet will most likely go unused.

One way to stretch out the outlets on your next cruise is to… use the 220 volt outlet.

There are a number of different devices and options available to do that.

Here’s a hands on look at a European type c night light and USB charger block combo

A top down look

A look at the USB port. It features one type A USB. This is good clarification because the type C in question here is European outlet type c adapter not USB-c.

Here’s the adapter on Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas.

Will this be banned on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises?

Royal announced that multi-plug adapters are banned

My current understanding of that rule is that multi-USB charging blocks are allowed. But anything that has an AC outlet on it must have only an AC outlet and nothing else.

This features no AC outlets so my interpretation is that this would be allowed.

Plugged in and working!

Conclusions

These are small and cheap and a great way to use an otherwise unused outlet and pull double duty while you’re doing it. In my opinion some sort of European type c adapter should be on everyone’s cruise must pack list.

Tip: Take a LONG Charging Cable on Your Next Trip

One tip that I give to cruisers (and frequent travelers for that matter) is… take a long phone charging cable. I know that’s in contrast to many of the things I write about. It’s normally… keep things as small as possible to save weight and space. Well, when it comes to charging in hotels, cruise ships and beyond, outlets and USB ports can be placed in out of the way locations. Taking a longer charging cable gives you a lot more flexibility and really doesn’t take up a lot of room.

Cruise on Royal Caribbean?

Royal Caribbean recently added multi outlet adapters to their banned items list. There are three main ways that I can see to work around this…

  1. A single outlet European C to US converter
  2. Multi USB port charging block
  3. A power bank. Charge the power bank when you’re out and about during the day. Use it in the evening to charge phones and such and free up an outlet.

Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

Royal Caribbean Oasis Class cruise ship at sea

Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

Original Publication: September 23, 2024

Updated: July 29, 2026

Royal Caribbean’s prohibition on extension cords, power strips and multi-plug outlets remains in place, but the cruise line has provided an important clarification about the chargers and adapters passengers can bring onboard.

As a frequent Royal Caribbean cruiser, the original multi-plug ban rocked my world. I regularly brought one or more multi-plug adapters, especially when sailing on older ships with relatively few cabin outlets.

Using the European Type C outlet has always been a helpful way to gain another charging location. That strategy was generally more important on older ships and less critical on newer ships with more built-in outlets and USB ports. The multi-plug ban makes the European outlet more valuable across the fleet.

The key clarification is that a properly marked device may provide one AC outlet plus up to four USB-A or USB-C charging ports.

Properly marked USB-only charging blocks are also allowed, as are basic plug adapters that convert one European Type C outlet into one standard US-style AC outlet.

The bottom line: An adapter with a recognized safety or conformity marking may have one AC outlet and up to four USB-A or USB-C ports. Properly marked USB-only chargers and basic one-to-one plug adapters are also allowed. Multiple AC outlets, extension cords and power strips remain prohibited.

In This Post

Royal Caribbean’s Latest Charger Clarification

Royal Caribbean’s prohibited-items policy lists electrical extension cords, power strips and multi-plug outlets among the electrical items passengers cannot bring onboard.

The stated exception covers device and USB chargers marked with a recognized United States or European safety or conformity marking.

Royal Caribbean has further clarified that a properly marked adapter may provide one AC outlet plus up to four USB-A or USB-C charging ports.

The reference to four ports applies to the USB ports on an adapter that also includes one AC outlet. It does not mean passengers may bring a device with four AC outlets.

The dividing line is now much clearer:

  • One AC outlet plus up to four USB ports is allowed when the adapter carries the required marking
  • Properly marked USB-only charging blocks are also allowed
  • Multiple AC outlets remain prohibited
  • A recognized safety or conformity marking must be present on devices with charging electronics

This clarification supersedes the narrower practical interpretation drawn from Royal Caribbean’s earlier 2024 social-media response, which indicated that an adapter combining one AC outlet with USB ports would not be allowed.

A basic one-to-one plug adapter remains a separate option because it changes the plug configuration without creating additional AC outlets.

All devices remain subject to inspection, and ship security has the final say over whether a particular item will be allowed onboard.

What Appears to Be Allowed

Based on Royal Caribbean’s current guidance, passengers may bring:

  • An adapter with a recognized safety or conformity marking, one AC outlet and up to four USB-A and/or USB-C ports
  • A properly marked USB-only charging block
  • A properly marked standard device charger that plugs directly into one 110V or 220V cabin outlet
  • A basic plug adapter, such as a European Type C adapter, that converts one outlet into one AC outlet

Device and USB chargers, including adapters that combine one AC outlet with USB charging ports, must carry a recognized United States, European or international safety or conformity marking.

Royal Caribbean’s policy does not specifically apply that marking requirement to a basic one-to-one plug adapter that does not contain charging electronics or create additional AC outlets.

Extension cords, power strips and devices with multiple AC outlets remain prohibited. An adapter that combines one AC outlet with USB charging ports should have no more than four USB-A and USB-C ports.

Are USB-Only Chargers Limited to Four Ports?

Royal Caribbean’s four-port limit applies to adapters that combine one AC outlet with USB charging ports.

Royal Caribbean’s published policy separately allows properly marked USB-only charging blocks and does not specifically state that these USB-only chargers are limited to four ports.

That means a properly marked USB-only charger with more than four ports is not expressly prohibited by the guidance discussed here. As always, the charger remains subject to inspection and final approval by Royal Caribbean’s security team.

What Remains Prohibited

Royal Caribbean continues to prohibit:

  • Electrical extension cords
  • Power strips
  • Surge-protected strips
  • Adapters that turn one AC outlet into multiple AC outlets
  • Universal travel adapters that provide multiple AC receptacles
  • Adapters that combine one AC outlet with more than four USB-A and USB-C ports
  • Device and USB chargers that do not carry the required recognized safety or conformity marking

An adapter is not prohibited simply because it combines an AC outlet with USB charging ports.

Under the clarified guidance, that configuration is allowed when the device has:

  • Only one AC outlet
  • No more than four USB-A and USB-C ports
  • No extension cord
  • A recognized safety or conformity marking

Multiple AC outlets are the key remaining configuration problem.

The latest clarification makes the policy much easier to work with, but you still need to check the exact design and markings before packing a charger or adapter.

Charging Options to Consider

Use the European Type C Outlet

I have long advocated making use of the 220V European Type C outlet found in many cruise cabins.

This strategy has always been especially useful on older Royal Caribbean ships with fewer cabin outlets. Newer ships generally offer more outlets and built-in USB charging ports, but the multi-plug ban makes the European outlet worth considering even when sailing on a newer ship.

A charger or adapter designed to plug directly into the European outlet can give you another charging location without creating multiple AC outlets.

Because USB devices receive the low-voltage output supplied by the charger, each phone, watch or other USB-powered device does not need to be separately compatible with 220V power.

Always confirm that the charger itself is rated for the available input voltage and carries the required safety or conformity marking.

For lots more about this strategy, see: Cruise Ship Power Solutions: Making Use of the 220-Volt Cabin Outlet on Your Next Cruise.

Use a Single-Outlet AC and USB Adapter

TESSAN universal travel adapter with one AC outlet, two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports

Pictured: TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter

Royal Caribbean’s clarified guidance allows a properly marked adapter with one AC outlet and up to four USB-A or USB-C ports.

This configuration can be especially useful because it preserves one conventional AC outlet while also providing USB charging for phones, watches, tablets and other devices.

Look for an adapter that has:

  • One AC outlet
  • Four or fewer total USB-A and USB-C ports
  • No extension cord
  • A recognized safety or conformity marking on the device

This is the configuration that was treated as prohibited under the earlier interpretation but is now addressed by Royal Caribbean’s updated clarification.

It has been difficult for me to find a non-strip option that satisfies all of these requirements. The TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter may be a good option because it includes one AC outlet, two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports and retractable plug options for European and standard North American wall outlets.

Product images for this variation show a CE conformity marking, along with a UKCA marking. Its one-AC-outlet and four-USB-port configuration places it within Royal Caribbean’s stated limits, although all devices remain subject to inspection and final approval by Royal Caribbean’s security team.

Important: This is a plug adapter, not a voltage converter. When connected to a 220V European outlet, anything plugged into its AC outlet must be compatible with that voltage.

Use a Basic European Plug Adapter

Royal Caribbean cruise 220V European Type C plug adapter

A basic European Type C adapter can convert the European cabin outlet into one standard US-style AC outlet.

The important part is that the adapter provides only one AC outlet. It should not split the outlet into two or more AC receptacles.

This can be useful for devices with standard US plugs, provided the device or power supply is compatible with the ship’s available voltage.

A plug adapter changes the plug shape. It does not convert voltage.

Use a Multi-Port USB Charger

Four-port USB-C and USB-A wall charger

Since so much of the gear we travel with now charges through USB, one good USB charging block can replace several individual wall chargers.

Properly marked USB-only charging blocks are allowed. Look for a model that plugs directly into the wall and carries a recognized safety or conformity marking.

Use a USB-C Laptop Charger

A sufficiently powerful multi-port USB-C charger may be able to charge a compatible laptop while also charging phones, tablets and other USB devices.

This can save an outlet compared with packing a separate laptop power supply and phone-charging block.

Make sure the charger carries the required recognized safety or conformity marking. If it also includes an AC outlet, it should have no more than four total USB-A and USB-C ports.

Bring a Power Bank

Anker MagGo portable USB-C power bank

A portable USB power bank provides another way to work around limited cabin outlets.

One practical strategy is to charge the power bank during the day, unplug it at night to free the cabin outlet and then use the stored power to charge phones, watches or other USB devices overnight.

That can be especially helpful when several people are sharing a cabin and everyone needs to charge multiple devices.

A power bank is also useful during long port days, excursions and flights.

Some Products to Consider

The following products may fit one or more of these charging strategies. Check the current product specifications, number of USB ports, input-voltage rating and safety or conformity markings before packing.

These are affiliate links. Multiple variations of these products may be available, and a different version may appear at the links. Verify that the specific variation you purchase meets Royal Caribbean’s current requirements.

Universal Travel Adapters: Check the Details

When planning our first European cruise in 2025, I purchased the TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter. We were excited about the trip and were also spending additional time in Europe, so I wanted one compact adapter that could handle several countries and devices.

The frustrating part of the original policy interpretation was that one compact universal adapter could replace several separate plugs, chargers and cables during the land portion of an international trip. Leaving it behind for the cruise meant packing a small bag of wires and adapters to accomplish the same jobs.

The updated clarification changes the situation.

A universal adapter is no longer automatically disqualified simply because it combines one AC outlet with USB charging ports. It is allowed when it has:

  • Only one AC outlet
  • No more than four USB-A and USB-C ports
  • No extension cord
  • A recognized safety or conformity marking

That means the number of outlets and USB ports is only part of the evaluation. The marking on the exact product is equally important.

Based on the product images for this variation, the TESSAN adapter displays a CE conformity marking, along with a UKCA marking. It also has one universal AC outlet, two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports, placing it within Royal Caribbean’s stated one-AC-outlet and four-USB-port limits.

That makes this a strong option under the clarified policy, although all devices remain subject to inspection and final approval by Royal Caribbean’s security team.

Remember that a universal travel adapter changes the plug configuration but does not convert voltage. When connected to a 220V outlet, anything plugged into its AC receptacle must support that voltage.

A universal adapter with multiple AC outlets, more than four USB ports alongside its AC outlet, or no recognized safety or conformity marking may still be prohibited.

How the Policy and Guidance Have Evolved

September 23, 2024: Multi-Plug Outlets Added to the Prohibited List

Royal Caribbean added multi-plug outlets to its prohibited-items policy alongside extension cords and power strips.

This was a significant change because simple multi-outlet adapters had previously been a popular way to work around the limited number of outlets in older cruise cabins.

September 30, 2024: Royal Caribbean Responds on Social Media

Royal Caribbean social media response concerning permitted USB chargers

@NiceCarFather contacted Royal Caribbean on X to ask whether an adapter that included an AC outlet and additional USB charging ports would be permitted.

The exchange appears to reference this Anker travel plug with an AC receptacle and USB charging ports.

The Royal Caribbean representative indicated that the combination device would not be allowed because it included an AC receptacle along with USB ports. The representative separately said that a USB-only charging block would be allowed.

That led to the practical interpretation that USB-only chargers were acceptable, while adapters combining AC and USB outputs were not.

October 7, 2024: USB Chargers Specifically Addressed

Royal Caribbean updated its published policy to say that consumer USB charging devices were allowed when their outputs were for USB cables and the devices carried recognized United States or European conformity markings.

That update confirmed the USB-charger exception, but it continued to leave AC-plus-USB combination adapters in a questionable position.

May 21, 2025: Universal Travel Adapter Complication

While planning an international trip, I realized how awkward the policy could be for passengers who needed a universal adapter before and after their cruise.

Many compact universal travel adapters combine one AC receptacle with several USB ports. Those features make the adapters convenient for hotels but appeared incompatible with the interpretation Royal Caribbean had provided in 2024.

The problem was not simply finding another charger. The universal adapter replaced several separate pieces of gear during the rest of the trip, so avoiding it onboard meant packing more individual plugs, chargers and cables.

July 28, 2026: One AC Outlet and Up to Four USB Ports Clarified

Royal Caribbean provided clearer guidance about devices that combine conventional AC power with USB charging.

The updated clarification allows a properly marked adapter with one AC outlet and up to four USB-A or USB-C ports.

This is the key development. It changes the narrower interpretation drawn from Royal Caribbean’s 2024 social-media response, which indicated that a combination AC-and-USB adapter would not be allowed.

The current dividing line is:

  • One AC outlet is allowed
  • Up to four USB-A and USB-C ports are allowed alongside that AC outlet
  • The device must carry a recognized safety or conformity marking
  • Multiple AC outlets, power strips and extension cords remain prohibited

Properly marked USB-only charging blocks remain allowed and are not described here as being limited to four ports.

All items remain subject to inspection and final approval by Royal Caribbean’s security team.

The Smartest Watch for Your Next Cruise?

Casio Men's Classic W800H-1AV Sport Watch with Black Resin BandPictured: Casio Men’s Classic W800H-1AV Sport Watch with Black Resin Band

Picture this… you’re on a cruise. Yay!! You dock at some amazing port that you’re excited about. You decide to go shopping, go to the beach or do some other fabulous activity. A few hours into the day you look down at your Apple Watch and you’re like, hey… is this the right time? After all, smart watches are smart, right?  Did your watch change time to the local time zone on it’s own? We’re not sure! So, you decide to ask a local what time it is. Wait, is that the same time zone as ship’s time? If it is the same time zone as ship’s time do they observe daylight savings time?  You think you’ve got it figured out but there’s that gnawing concern in the back of your head… what time is it really?? I don’t want to miss the ship and I don’t want to head back super early and miss port time.

I highly recommend taking along a regular watch on your cruise and anytime you’re in port. By regular I mean just a plain old watch, not a smart watch. We use this one. You don’t have to necessarily wear it if you don’t want to, just set it to ship’s time and throw it in your bag. The regular/non-smart watch part is important to me. Phones and smart watches have a tendency to automatically adjust based on location. I’ve had this happen even when connecting to WiFi, with the phone in airplane mode. Of course, you can change your device’s settings so that it doesn’t auto adjust, but having a simple watch with you is the easiest way to know you have the right time

Another tip for analog watches. Some models have more than one time zone. Each and every cruise I sync all time zones with ship time. That way I don’t have to worry about whether or not I hit the button to display an alternate time zone.

A couple more tips… when exiting the ship, take a picture or screenshot of the all on board time and emergency contact information for the port. Also, when you’re looking for a regular watch, get one that’s waterproof so it’s happy at the beach.

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for Cruises: 5-Port Type C Charger (Use the 220 Outlet on Your Next Cruise)

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for CruisesPicture from my Hands on Review of this great charging block

LiFiYiRc European USB Charger for Cruises: 5-Port Type C Charger

Cruise cabins can have a frustrating shortage of convenient power outlets. One of my favorite ways to add useful charging capacity is to take advantage of the European Type C outlet found in many cruise ship cabins.

The LiFiYiRc European USB Charger plugs directly into that outlet and gives you five USB charging ports without adding another AC outlet.

European USB charger for cruises

I’ve personally used and tested this exact charger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. It worked well for turning the cabin’s European outlet into a convenient charging station for several devices.

For photos and more detailed testing, see my hands-on review of the LiFiYiRc European USB charger.

Five USB Charging Ports

The LiFiYiRc charger combines USB-C and USB-A charging in one compact device:

  • 2 USB-C ports
  • 3 USB-A ports
  • PD fast-charging support
  • QC 3.0 fast-charging support
  • European Type C plug
  • 100-240V AC input

The charger I tested is labeled as a 65W Fast Charger. Individual ports are marked PD20W, QC3.0, PD15W, 3.1A and 3.1A.

Why I Like Type C USB Chargers for Cruises

Many cruise cabins include a European-style outlet that American travelers may otherwise leave completely unused.

A Type C USB charger turns that outlet into another dedicated charging location for phones, watches, tablets, headphones, power banks and other USB-powered travel gear.

That’s especially useful when several people are sharing a cabin or when you travel with a growing collection of rechargeable devices.

For more on this strategy, see my guide to making use of the 220V European outlet on a cruise ship.

A Must-Pack Charger for My Cruises

This has become one of my must-pack charging accessories for cruises. I’ve used this LiFiYiRc charger on multiple sailings to take advantage of the European-style outlet in the cabin and add a convenient charging location for several devices.

One of the ships where I specifically documented using it was Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. I plugged it directly into the European cabin outlet, connected several charging cables and used it throughout the cruise.

I even used it to provide power to my Dell XPS laptop. My laptop normally uses a 130W charger, so charging was slower and this isn’t a replacement for its full-power factory charger. Still, it was able to provide power in a pinch.

For me, the biggest benefit is simply having another dependable place to charge devices. Instead of leaving the European outlet unused, this charger turns it into five USB ports and helps take some of the pressure off the other outlets in the cabin.

You can see photos and more detailed testing from one of my cruises in my full LiFiYiRc hands-on review.

USB-C and USB-A in the Same Charger

Another reason I like this configuration is that it includes both newer USB-C ports and traditional USB-A ports.

Most of us are gradually moving toward USB-C, but plenty of travel accessories still use USB-A charging cables.

With two USB-C and three USB-A ports, this charger works well with a mix of newer and older charging cables without requiring multiple charging blocks.

A Good Option for Royal Caribbean’s Current Outlet Rules

Royal Caribbean’s electrical-device rules are important when choosing a cruise charger. Multi-plug AC adapters and devices that add additional electrical outlets can be prohibited.

This LiFiYiRc charger is different because it does not provide an additional AC outlet. It plugs into the European Type C outlet and provides USB charging ports only.

That’s one reason I like this style of charger for Royal Caribbean cruises.

For the latest policy details and examples of chargers and adapters that may or may not qualify, see my guide to Royal Caribbean’s multi-plug adapter rules.

Cruise-line policies can change, and final approval of any electrical device is up to the cruise line and onboard security.

Using a 220V Cruise Cabin Outlet

One potential point of confusion when using a European cruise cabin outlet is voltage.

When you use a simple plug adapter to connect an AC-powered US device to a 220/240V outlet, you need to make sure the device itself supports that voltage.

The LiFiYiRc charger I tested is labeled for 100-240V AC input. Your phone, watch or other USB device connects to the charger’s USB output rather than directly to the ship’s AC power.

That makes a USB charger like this a simple way to put the European outlet to work.

For conventional plug adapters and AC-powered devices, always verify voltage compatibility before connecting anything to a 220/240V outlet.

Bottom Line

The LiFiYiRc European USB Charger is a simple way to get more usefulness out of the European outlet in a cruise cabin.

It provides two USB-C ports and three USB-A ports, doesn’t add another AC outlet and has worked well for me during actual onboard use.

If the European outlet in your cabin would otherwise go unused, a charger like this can turn it into a very useful multi-device charging location.

For onboard photos, additional testing and more observations from my experience using it, see the complete hands-on LiFiYiRc USB charger review.

More About Travel Routers:

Travel routers are generally small devices that allow you to create a small Wi-Fi network.

The problem with traditional Wi-Fi routers is that they don’t know how to handle “captive networks”. Captive networks are networks that require you to log in before you can access the internet. Many publicly available WiFi networks are considered captive networks. That includes most hotels and cruise ships.

Travel routers are (or at least should be) designed to handle captive networks. You basically log in to the router through a web browser and then log into the captive network using the router’s settings.

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets – Use the 220 Outlet On Your Next Cruise

European Travel Plug Adapter, US to Europe Plug Adapter, International Itly Travel Plug Adapter with 2 Outlets 3 USB Ports(2 USB C), Type C Power Adapter to Italy Spain France Portugal Iceland Germany

HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter: 2 Outlets + 3 USB Ports

When you’re traveling internationally, a simple plug adapter can do more than just make your American plug fit a European outlet. The right adapter can also give you additional places to charge the phones, watches, cameras, power banks and other electronics that tend to travel with us.

That can be especially useful on a cruise. Many cruise cabins have a European-style outlet in addition to the standard North American outlet. With the right adapter, that otherwise-unused outlet can become another valuable charging location.

The HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter turns one compatible European outlet into two standard North American-style AC outlets along with three USB charging ports.

It is also compact and weighs about 2.4 ounces, making it an easy addition to a travel electronics bag without taking up much luggage space.

5 Charging Connections in One Small Adapter

The HANYCONY adapter provides five places to connect devices:

  • 2 standard North American AC outlets
  • 2 USB-C ports
  • 1 USB-A port

That combination is particularly useful if you’re traveling with a mix of older and newer electronics. You can connect conventional chargers to the AC outlets while plugging USB cables directly into the adapter.

The USB ports provide up to 15.5 watts total, making them useful for everyday devices such as phones, watches, earbuds and other smaller electronics.

This isn’t a high-powered USB-C laptop charger, however. If you need fast USB-C charging for a laptop or another higher-powered device, you’ll probably still want to bring the appropriate charger.

Made for European Type C Outlets

This version uses the familiar European Type C two-pin plug. It is designed for travel to many popular European destinations including Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Greece and Iceland.

It is important to remember that Europe doesn’t use one universal electrical plug.

In particular, this Type C model is not the correct adapter for the UK or Ireland. Those destinations generally use the larger Type G plug. Other destinations can also use different outlet standards, so it’s worth checking the plug type used at each stop on your itinerary.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Useful for Cruise Ship Cabins

One reason European plug adapters can be particularly useful for cruise travel is that many cruise cabins include a European-style 220V outlet in addition to a North American outlet.

If you don’t have an adapter, that outlet may go completely unused. With a compatible adapter, it can become another useful charging location for your travel electronics.

I’ve covered this strategy in more detail in Cruise Ship Power Solutions: Making Use of the 220 Volt Cabin Outlet.

The HANYCONY does not include surge protection, which is an important consideration for cruise travel. However, cruise lines can also place restrictions on adapters that provide multiple AC outlets, so the lack of surge protection does not automatically mean an adapter is permitted onboard.

This post may contain affiliate links. We may make a commission when you use our links. This will never cost you extra. Thank you for supporting Cruise Packing List!

This Is a Plug Adapter, Not a Voltage Converter

This is one of the most important things to understand about international travel adapters.

The HANYCONY changes the physical plug configuration. It does not change the voltage coming from the outlet.

If you plug it into a 220-240V European outlet, the AC outlets on the adapter are still supplying that higher voltage.

Many modern electronics chargers are designed for worldwide voltage and are labeled something similar to INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz. Those devices can generally be used with the appropriate plug adapter.

A 120V-only appliance is different. Do not assume that a hair dryer, curling appliance or other high-powered device can safely be plugged into a European outlet simply because this adapter makes the plug fit.

Always check the voltage rating printed on the device or its charger before connecting it.

Bottom Line

The HANYCONY Type C European Travel Plug Adapter packs two AC outlets, two USB-C ports and one USB-A port into a compact adapter.

It’s a useful option for European travel and can also help make use of European-style outlets found in many cruise cabins.

Just keep cruise-line rules in mind. In particular, because this model provides two AC outlets, it is not a good choice for Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises under their current multi-plug rules.

Important Power Adapter Rules for Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Cruises

TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter, 140W GaN, Black | International Plug Adaptor, 3 USB C and 1 USB A Charging Ports, Worldwide Power Outlet, US to Europe UK AUS Ireland

If you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises, be especially careful when choosing power adapters and charging devices. Royal Caribbean prohibits extension cords, power strips and multi-plug outlets. Under its current guidance, an allowed adapter can have one AC outlet plus up to four USB-A or USB-C charging ports. Devices with multiple AC outlets remain prohibited.

That means the HANYCONY adapter featured in this post is not a good choice for Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises. Although it does not have surge protection and its USB ports are useful for travel, it has two AC outlets. That second AC outlet makes it a multi-plug device under Royal Caribbean’s current rules.

See: Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

If you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity, here are two alternatives we’ve specifically looked at:

Cruise-line policies can change and electrical items remain subject to inspection by ship security, so check the current rules before sailing.
