TP-Link Roam 7 Travel Router: Wi-Fi 7 for Hotels, Cruises & More – on sale for $89, Save $40

TP-Link Roam 7 BE3600 Wi-Fi 7 Portable Travel Router | Dual-Band, 2.5G Port, USB 3.0 | Multi-Modes in One | OpenVPN, WireGuard® | Public WiFi Sharing for Hotel/Cruise/RV/Plane | No 6 GHz | TL-WR3602BE

TP-Link Roam 7 Travel Router: Wi-Fi 7 for Hotels, Cruises & More

The TP-Link Roam 7 Travel Router, model TL-WR3602BE, is a compact dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router designed for hotels, cruise ships, vacation rentals and other places where you may need to connect through public Wi-Fi.

Instead of connecting every phone, tablet, laptop and streaming device separately, the Roam 7 can connect to the available network and create a separate, password-protected Wi-Fi network for your devices. Once your devices are configured to use the router, they can automatically reconnect to that familiar network whenever you travel.

Related hands-on experience: We have used a travel router aboard a Royal Caribbean ship. See our hands-on GL.iNet Beryl AX travel router review for step-by-step photos showing the captive-portal login process and real-world cruise ship setup.

What Does a Travel Router Do?

A travel router creates your own small Wi-Fi network while using another internet connection as its source. That source could be:

  • A hotel or cruise ship Wi-Fi network
  • A wired Ethernet connection
  • A phone connected through USB tethering
  • A compatible USB cellular modem

This can make traveling with multiple devices much easier. Your devices connect to the travel router, while the router handles the connection to the hotel, cruise ship or other available network.

The Roam 7 can also help separate your devices from other users on a public network. Its built-in VPN support provides another option for travelers who already use a compatible VPN service.

TP-Link Roam 7 Features

Model TP-Link TL-WR3602BE
Wireless Standard Dual-band Wi-Fi 7
Rated Wireless Speeds Up to 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz
Connected Devices Supports up to 90 devices
Public Wi-Fi Support Hotspot mode with captive-portal authentication through the TP-Link Tether app
Ethernet Ports One 2.5 Gbps WAN port and one Gigabit LAN port
USB USB 3.0 for compatible cellular devices, phone tethering or file sharing
VPN Support VPN client and server capabilities, including OpenVPN and WireGuard; PPTP and L2TP are also supported
Power USB-C, 5V/3A; no built-in battery
Operating Modes Router, hotspot, USB tethering, USB modem, access point, range extender and client
Approximate Size 4.96 × 3.68 × 1.42 inches

The advertised wireless speeds are theoretical maximums. Actual internet performance will still depend on the hotel, cruise ship, cellular or other connection supplying internet access.

Connecting Through Hotel and Cruise Ship Login Pages

Many hotel and cruise ship Wi-Fi systems use a captive portal. This is the webpage that appears after connecting and asks you to accept terms, enter a room number or sign in to a previously purchased internet package.

The Roam 7 is designed to handle this process through TP-Link’s Tether app. You connect the router to the public network, complete the login process and then connect your devices to the network created by the router.

Our hands-on GL.iNet Beryl AX travel router review shows this general process in action aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise. It includes photos showing how we connected the router to the ship’s Wi-Fi, opened the captive portal and signed in to our purchased internet package.

That review covers the GL.iNet Beryl AX rather than this TP-Link model, but it provides a useful real-world look at what using a travel router on a cruise ship is actually like.

Using the TP-Link Roam 7 on a Cruise

A travel router can be particularly useful in a cruise cabin where several people may have phones, tablets, laptops or other connected devices. Once those devices know the router’s network name and password, you do not have to repeatedly enter a long password on every device.

There are, however, a few important limitations:

  • The router does not provide free internet or replace a cruise line Wi-Fi package.
  • It does not override the cruise line’s terms, device limits or account restrictions.
  • Captive-portal behavior varies between cruise lines, ships and internet providers.
  • The router must remain powered and within range of the ship’s Wi-Fi network.

Cruise line internet systems and policies can change. Check the current rules for your ship and Wi-Fi plan before relying on a travel router.

Flexible USB-C Power

The Roam 7 does not contain a battery. It is powered through USB-C and requires a 5V/3A power source.

That gives travelers several possible power options, including the included adapter, a properly rated USB charger or a compatible power bank. TP-Link recommends using its supplied adapter or a certified adapter that meets the router’s power requirements.

USB-C power also makes it easier to incorporate the router into a compact travel charging setup without packing a proprietary power cable.

VPN Support for Public Wi-Fi

The Roam 7 supports VPN client and server functions, including OpenVPN and WireGuard. Travelers who already subscribe to a compatible VPN service may be able to configure the router so connected devices use the VPN automatically.

A VPN can add privacy when using an unfamiliar network, but basic precautions still matter. Keep devices updated, use strong passwords, enable multifactor authentication where available and do not ignore browser security warnings.

Who Is the TP-Link Roam 7 For?

The Roam 7 makes the most sense for frequent travelers, families carrying several connected devices and remote workers who want a consistent network while away from home.

It may be more equipment than necessary for someone who only travels with a phone and is comfortable connecting directly to hotel or cruise ship Wi-Fi.

For travelers who can benefit from its features, the combination of captive-portal support, USB-C power, VPN compatibility, Ethernet ports and multiple operating modes makes the Roam 7 a versatile option.

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes: Easier, More Organized Travel Packing, 4-Pack – on sale for $15.39, Best Price!

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes, 4pcs Expandable Storage Travel Luggage Bags Organizers(Black)

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes: Easier, More Organized Travel Packing

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes help separate clothing while also squeezing down soft items to make better use of the space inside your suitcase.

They are useful for all kinds of travel, including flights, road trips, hotel stays, weekend getaways and cruise vacations. With four different cube sizes, the set makes it easier to organize clothing by type, traveler or outfit instead of letting everything become one large pile.

How the Compression Design Works

Each cube has a main zipper that closes the storage compartment and a second zipper around the outside. Once the cube is packed, closing the outer zipper pulls the sides closer together and reduces its overall depth.

This is different from a vacuum storage bag. The cubes do not remove all the air from your clothing, but they can compress soft items and create a more compact, structured bundle.

They work especially well for items such as:

  • T-shirts and casual shirts
  • Shorts and lightweight pants
  • Underwear and socks
  • Sleepwear
  • Swimwear
  • Light sweaters and jackets

You can also leave the outer zipper open and use them like standard packing cubes when organization is more important than compression.

Four Sizes for Different Types of Clothing

The set includes four progressively sized packing cubes. This gives you more flexibility than trying to fit every item into cubes of the same size.

The larger cubes can be used for pants, shirts, sweaters and other bulky clothing. Medium and smaller cubes are useful for underwear, socks, swimwear, accessories or a complete change of clothes.

The different sizes can also help when two people share a suitcase. Each traveler can have designated cubes, or the set can be divided by clothing category.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Compression Cubes vs. Regular Packing Cubes

Regular packing cubes are primarily designed to organize a suitcase. Compression packing cubes add the option of pulling the packed clothing into a thinner bundle.

That additional compression can be helpful when packing a carry-on or trying to fit bulky clothing into a limited amount of space. The tradeoff is that an overfilled compression cube can be harder to close than a standard cube.

Compression also does not make your luggage lighter. It may create room for additional items, but airline baggage weight limits still apply.

Useful for Flights, Hotels, Road Trips and Cruises

Packing cubes are useful in both carry-on and checked luggage. In a carry-on, they help keep small items contained and make it easier to find clothing without digging through the entire bag.

For road trips or vacations with several hotel stops, you can remove only the cube you need instead of completely unpacking at every destination. A smaller cube can also be packed with one complete outfit for an overnight stop.

They can be particularly convenient on cruise vacations, where travelers often pack casual clothes, swimwear, dinner outfits and sleepwear for the same trip. Once you reach your cabin, the cubes can be moved directly into drawers or placed on closet shelves for quicker unpacking.

The cruise application is useful, but these are versatile travel organizers rather than a cruise-specific product.

Lightweight and Easy to Handle

The cubes are made from lightweight fabric so they add relatively little weight to your luggage. Each cube also includes a carrying handle, making it easier to lift a tightly packed cube out of a suitcase, backpack or hotel drawer.

The structured shape can also help keep clothing contained if a suitcase is opened during travel or inspected at the airport.

Things to Keep in Mind

Compression works best when clothing is distributed evenly throughout the cube. A large lump on one side can make the outer zipper difficult to close and place unnecessary strain on the fabric.

Pressing down gently while working the compression zipper around the cube is generally better than pulling forcefully. Rigid items and very bulky clothing may not compress much and are often better packed separately.

Compression can also wrinkle some clothing more than loose packing. Items that need to remain crisp may be better placed in a regular packing cube, garment folder or separate section of the suitcase.

Bottom Line

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes combine the organization of traditional packing cubes with the option to reduce the space taken up by softer clothing.

The four sizes make the set adaptable to carry-ons, checked luggage, backpacks and shared suitcases. They are a practical option for flights, hotel stays, road trips, cruises and other vacations where organized packing can make the entire trip easier.

  • Large towel clips take up valuable luggage space – bring bands instead of a giant suitcase
  • Our natural latex holders will never rust, break, or lose strength like old school towel clips
  • NOTE: Perfect for TEMPORARY use (beach, cruise & pool towels) & NOT for PERMANENT use like patio furniture

We use these exact towel bands on they work great. In my opinion these (or beach towel clips) are a must have for any cruise or beach location. They don’t take up a lot of room and save a lot of frustration by keeping beach towels in place.

Towel Bands Or Clips? We have used both towel bands and clips extensively on cruises and beach vacations. In my opinion having one or the other is a must have. TESSAN 140W GaN Universal Travel Adapter: A Royal Caribbean-Compatible Cruise Charger

TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter, 140W GaN, Black | International Plug Adaptor, 3 USB C and 1 USB A Charging Ports, Worldwide Power Outlet, US to Europe UK AUS Ireland

TESSAN 140W GaN Universal Travel Adapter: A Royal Caribbean-Compatible Cruise Charger

The TESSAN 140W GaN Universal Travel Adapter combines worldwide plug compatibility with a powerful USB charging setup that looks particularly well suited to Royal Caribbean’s current cruise-ship power rules.

It provides one AC outlet, three USB-C ports and one USB-A port, allowing up to five devices to connect at once. Even better for travelers carrying laptops and other higher-powered gear, its USB-C charging system can provide up to 140W of total output.

And despite the “travel adapter” name, this isn’t only useful overseas. Its retractable North American plug means it can also plug directly into a standard US-style cruise cabin outlet, making it a practical primary charger for American cruisers.

Check Current Price & Availability: TESSAN 140W GaN Universal Travel Adapter

One AC Outlet + Four USB Ports

The TESSAN adapter includes:

  • One universal AC outlet
  • Three USB-C charging ports
  • One USB-A charging port
  • Up to 140W total USB charging output
  • Retractable Type A, Type C, Type G and Type I plugs
  • Replaceable fuse with a spare fuse
  • No cord
  • No surge protection

That makes this much more than a simple plug adapter. The high-output GaN USB-C charging system can potentially replace a separate laptop charger while the remaining ports handle phones, tablets, watches, power banks and other travel gear.

Should Work on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises

The configuration of this TESSAN adapter lines up very closely with Royal Caribbean’s current guidance.

Royal Caribbean allows a properly marked adapter with one AC outlet plus up to four USB-A or USB-C charging ports. This TESSAN model has exactly one AC outlet and four total USB ports. Product photos also show recognized conformity markings on the adapter.

Applicable Requirement TESSAN 140W Adapter Check
Single AC outlet One universal AC receptacle
Four or fewer USB ports Exactly four: three USB-C + one USB-A
Recognized safety or conformity marking Product photos show CE and UKCA conformity markings
No extension cord or power-strip design Plugs directly into the outlet

That puts this adapter right at the maximum USB-port count currently allowed alongside a single AC outlet.

For complete details about the rule and other charging options, see: Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

The specific one-AC-outlet and four-USB-port guidance discussed here comes from Royal Caribbean. Celebrity Cruises has similar restrictions on prohibited power strips and electrical devices, but travelers should always verify current requirements with their specific cruise line.

Cruise-line policies can change, and individual electrical items remain subject to inspection and final approval by ship security.

Works with Both North American and European Cruise Cabin Outlets

tessan universal outlet

Don’t let the “travel adapter” name make this seem like something that is only useful overseas.

The TESSAN includes retractable plugs for both North American Type A outlets and European Type C outlets. That makes it particularly useful in cruise cabins, where you may have access to both a standard North American outlet and a 220V European outlet.

You can plug the adapter into the standard North American cabin outlet just like a conventional charger, or use the European Type C plug to take advantage of an additional outlet that might otherwise go unused.

That flexibility is especially valuable under Royal Caribbean’s current power rules. Many products designed to add charging capacity use a power-strip or multi-outlet configuration with two or more AC receptacles. Those designs can run afoul of Royal Caribbean’s prohibition on multi-plug outlets.

Finding a compact charger that provides only one AC outlet while also adding several USB ports is surprisingly difficult. This TESSAN model is unusual because it provides one AC outlet plus four USB charging ports while remaining usable with both North American and European wall outlets.

For a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity cruise, that makes it much more than an international travel accessory. It can serve as a primary cabin charger regardless of which of those two common outlet types you decide to use.

Remember: The adapter changes the plug configuration but does not convert voltage. When using a 220V European outlet, anything connected to the AC receptacle must be compatible with that voltage.

Check Current Price & Availability →

140W GaN USB-C Charging Can Replace a Laptop Charger

One of the most interesting features here is the built-in 140W GaN USB charging system.

The USB-C1 and USB-C2 ports can each provide up to 140W when used individually, while the adapter’s total USB output is limited to 140W. That gives it enough power for many USB-C laptops while still providing additional ports for phones, watches and other travel gear.

When multiple USB devices are connected at the same time, the available charging power is divided among the ports.

For travelers who already charge a laptop through USB-C, this could eliminate the need to pack a separate laptop power brick. That makes the TESSAN especially appealing for international trips where a cruise is only part of the itinerary.

Useful Beyond the Cruise Ship

Retractable Type A, Type C, Type G and Type I plugs make this a true universal travel adapter rather than a Europe-only accessory.

That means the same adapter can be useful before and after a cruise in hotels throughout Europe, the UK, Australia, the United States and many other destinations.

The European Type C plug is particularly useful aboard cruise ships equipped with a 220V European cabin outlet, giving you another charging location without creating multiple AC receptacles.

Important: This Is Not a Voltage Converter

TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter, 140W GaN, Black | International Plug Adaptor, 3 USB C and 1 USB A Charging Ports, Worldwide Power Outlet, US to Europe UK AUS Ireland

The TESSAN adapter changes the plug configuration but does not convert voltage.

The adapter is designed for international input voltages, but anything connected to its AC outlet must also be compatible with the voltage supplied by the wall or cruise-cabin outlet.

Check the device or power supply for an input rating such as 100-240V before connecting it to a 220V outlet. This is especially important with hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners and other higher-powered appliances.

USB devices powered directly through the TESSAN’s USB ports receive the charging output produced by the adapter itself.

Bottom Line

The TESSAN 140W GaN Universal Travel Adapter checks a lot of boxes for cruise and international travel.

Its combination of one AC outlet, four USB ports, visible conformity markings and powerful 140W GaN USB-C charging fits Royal Caribbean’s current outlet-and-port limits while providing enough charging capability to potentially replace several separate adapters and power bricks.

For a trip that combines a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity cruise with international travel before or afterward, this is an especially interesting all-in-one option.

Hurley Rubber Tote Bag: A Waterproof Beach Bag for Beach, Pool & More

Hurley Beach Tote Bag

Hurley Rubber Tote Bag: A Waterproof Beach Bag for Beach, Pool & More

A good beach bag can be especially useful on a cruise, whether you’re headed to the pool deck, spending the day at a beach port, or just need an easy way to carry towels, sunscreen, water bottles, and other gear. The Hurley Rubber Tote Bag is a sturdy EVA tote designed to handle water, sand, and the general mess that tends to come along with a beach day.

Unlike a traditional fabric tote, the EVA construction is easy to clean. Sand and debris can be shaken or rinsed out after a trip to the beach.

A Handy Cruise Beach & Pool Bag

The freestanding design is one of the more useful features of the Hurley Rubber Tote Bag. The structured EVA body stays upright and open, making it easier to load and unload than a floppy beach bag.

That could be particularly handy on a cruise for:

  • Beach and pool days
  • Carrying towels, sunscreen, drinks, and other essentials
  • Shore excursions involving water or sand

Waterproof, Sand-Resistant & Easy to Clean

EVA is a particularly practical material for this type of travel bag. The Hurley tote is designed to resist water and sand rather than absorbing them like many fabric bags.

After a beach day, you can dump out loose sand and rinse the tote clean instead of bringing a sandy fabric bag back into your cruise cabin.

The open tote design also makes it easy to see and reach your gear without digging through multiple compartments.

Multiple Sizes & Colors

Hurley offers this tote in multiple size and color combinations. The option featured here is the larger version, which gives you more room for towels and other beach-day essentials.

A Simple Tote for Cruise Beach Days

The Hurley Rubber Tote Bag combines a roomy, freestanding design with EVA construction that’s well suited to pools, beaches, and other wet environments. For cruisers looking for an easy-to-clean alternative to a traditional fabric beach bag, it’s a practical option to consider.

Travelon Voyages Anti-Theft Compact Sling: Travel Bag with Built-In Security – On Sale for $33.98, Save 44%

Travelon Anti-Theft The Voyages Compact Sling

Travelon Voyages Anti-Theft Compact Sling: Travel Bag with Built-In Security

A compact sling bag can be a great way to keep your most important travel items close without carrying a full backpack. The Travelon Voyages Anti-Theft Compact Sling takes that idea a step further with security features specifically designed for travel.

This is a small 1.5-liter sling intended for essentials like your phone, wallet, passport, cards and keys. Its compact size makes it especially interesting for airports, sightseeing, cruise port days and other situations where you want your valuables close and accessible.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Travelon’s 5-Point Anti-Theft Security System

The standout feature is Travelon’s built-in 5-Point Anti-Theft Security System. Instead of relying on a single lock or hidden pocket, the bag incorporates several layers of protection.

Features include:

  • Slash-resistant body: Reinforced construction helps make the bag more difficult to cut open.
  • Slash-resistant strap: Adds protection against someone attempting to cut the strap and grab the bag.
  • Locking compartments: Zipper security adds an extra step before the main compartment can be opened.
  • Lock-down hardware: The adjustable strap can provide another layer of protection when you’re carrying or securing the bag.
  • RFID-blocking pocket: A zippered interior pocket provides a protected place for compatible passports and cards.

No travel bag eliminates the possibility of theft, but these features add several barriers while still keeping the bag practical for everyday use.

For another simple way to add security to travel-bag zippers, see our guide to zipper clips for travel.

Compact Size for Travel Essentials

The Voyages Compact Sling measures approximately 5″ wide x 8.5″ high x 2″ deep and has about 1.5 liters of capacity. It weighs approximately 0.65 pounds empty.

This isn’t intended to replace a daypack. The advantage is carrying a relatively small bag that stays close to your body and holds the things you don’t necessarily want buried inside a larger backpack or carry-on.

Good candidates include:

  • Phone
  • Passport or ID
  • Wallet or card holder
  • Cash
  • Cruise card
  • Keys
  • Earbuds
  • Compact power bank
  • Charging cable
  • Small travel documents
  • Hand sanitizer and other small essentials

The main compartment includes interior organization along with a tethered key clip. There’s also a hidden rear pocket that can provide another place for important documents or other small valuables.

Why a Small Anti-Theft Sling Makes Sense for Travel

One of the biggest advantages of a sling bag is that you can keep it close and rotate it toward the front of your body when you’re in crowded areas.

That’s useful in airports, train stations, markets, busy tourist areas and cruise ports. Instead of reaching behind you to access a backpack, you can move the sling to the front and get to your phone, wallet or other essentials without removing the entire bag.

The Travelon design adds dedicated anti-theft features to that already useful sling format.

The adjustable strap accommodates approximately 34″ to 58″, giving you flexibility in how tightly or loosely you wear it.

A Good Size for Cruise Port Days and Shore Excursions

This style of bag can be particularly useful when you get off the ship.

For a sightseeing excursion, walking tour or day spent exploring a port city, you may only need a phone, cruise card, payment methods, identification, keys and a few small essentials. A 1.5-liter sling keeps those items together without requiring a larger backpack.

It’s also small enough to keep close to your body in busy tourist areas.

If you’re deciding whether your passport belongs in the bag in the first place, see: Cruise Port Days: Should You Take Your Passport Off the Ship?

Travelon Voyages Anti-Theft Compact Sling: Bottom Line

The Travelon Voyages Anti-Theft Compact Sling stands out because the security features are integrated into a very small, practical travel bag.

The slash-resistant construction, locking compartments, lock-down hardware, RFID-blocking pocket and hidden rear pocket are particularly appealing for travelers who want to keep a passport, wallet, phone and other important items close while moving through airports, cruise ports and crowded sightseeing areas.

If your goal is carrying just the essentials rather than packing an entire day bag, this looks like a particularly interesting option.

Zelin Anti-Theft Zipper Clips: Simple Travel Security for Backpacks & Bags, 4-Pack

zelin Anti Theft Zipper Clips, Travel Essentials, Carabiner, 4Pcs Grey | Elegant Zinc Alloy Zipper Pull Locks, Airplane Gadgets and Travel Accessories for Backpacks, Commuting and Outdoor Safety

Zelin Anti-Theft Zipper Clips: Simple Travel Security for Backpacks & Bags

Small travel accessories can make a surprising difference when you’re navigating airports, cruise terminals, public transportation and crowded tourist areas. Zelin Anti-Theft Zipper Clips are compact double-opening clips designed to connect zipper pulls and add an extra step before a pocket or compartment can be opened.

They offer a convenient alternative to dealing with a small padlock, key or combination on bags you may need to open frequently throughout the day.

Small Double-Opening Zipper Clips

The Zelin clips feature a double-opening carabiner-style design. Each end attaches to a zipper pull, helping keep paired zipper pulls together.

They’re made from zinc alloy and are small enough for everyday travel bags without adding much bulk.

Potential uses include:

  • Backpacks
  • Crossbody bags and purses
  • Carry-on luggage
  • Personal item bags
  • Exterior suitcase pockets
  • Electronics organizers
  • Toiletry bags
  • Packing cubes

They can also serve as replacement zipper pulls if a regular pull tab breaks during a trip.

Check Current Price & Availability →

A Useful Extra Step in Crowded Travel Areas

One of the most interesting uses for these clips is securing frequently accessed bags while you’re moving through busy areas.

If two zipper pulls are clipped together, someone can’t simply grab one zipper and open the compartment in a single motion. That extra step may help discourage quick or opportunistic access.

That can be useful in places like airports, train stations, cruise terminals, public transportation, busy attractions and crowded port areas.

For a deeper look at this idea, including different types of zipper clips and ways to use them while traveling, see our guide: Zipper Clips for Travel: Anti-Theft Deterrent and In-Transit Bag Security

Easy to Use Without a Key or Combination

The convenience is one of the biggest advantages of this style of zipper clip.

These clips can be opened quickly when you need access while still adding an extra step for someone trying to open the zipper unnoticed.

That makes them particularly interesting for excursion bags, sightseeing backpacks and other bags that stay with you throughout the day.

A Simple Upgrade for Everyday Travel Security

Zipper clips like these make sense because they add a small barrier without making your bag inconvenient to use. They keep paired zipper pulls together, require an extra step to open and may discourage quick or casual access in crowded travel areas.

A small padlock can accomplish something similar, but on a backpack or other soft-sided travel bag, neither option turns the bag into a secure container. The entire bag can still be taken, and the fabric or zipper itself remains a potential weak point. For many travelers, the practical difference is convenience.

The Zelin clips are quick to open when you need access, require no key or combination and are compact enough to leave attached throughout a trip. For backpacks, crossbody bags, carry-ons and other frequently accessed travel bags, that combination makes them a useful and easy security upgrade.

I have these exact Zelin clips and use them regularly on both backpacks and luggage. I originally picked them up for a trip to Europe, but they worked so well that they’ve since become one of my regular travel must-packs.

Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage – Now $119 w/Coupon (Save 61%) + In-Depth Hands on Reiew

ANTLER - Soft Stripe Medium Luggage

Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage: A Rare In-Between Size for Cruise Travel

I have been looking for something very specific: a suitcase that lands between a typical carry-on and a medium checked bag. That size range is surprisingly hard to find.

Related: Antler Soft Stripe Review!

We have used Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch carry-on bags and the Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bags and have liked them very much. The 21-inch Maxlite is a great carry-on, and the 25-inch Maxlite has been our go-to checked bag for cruise travel. But there are times when a carry-on feels too tight and a full 25-inch checked bag feels like more suitcase than I want to take.

That is why I picked up the Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage. It has a rare middle-ground capacity: more useful packing space than a standard carry-on, but not as large as many traditional medium checked bags.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Why This Size Makes Sense

Most luggage jumps from carry-on size to a fairly large checked bag. That can leave a gap for travelers who want more room than a carry-on, but still want to keep things compact and manageable.

That middle size can be especially useful for cruise travel. Cruise packing often involves more than just clothes. You may be packing shoes, toiletries, formal night clothing, swimsuits, layers, electronics, chargers, medications, cruise documents and pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel items. A standard carry-on can get tight quickly.

At the same time, not every trip needs a larger checked bag. For shorter cruises, warm-weather itineraries, solo trips, lighter packing, or travel that includes trains, taxis and hotels, a smaller checked bag can be much easier to manage.

The Rare Middle-Ground Capacity

This is the main reason I bought this bag. The Antler Soft Stripe Medium is listed with a 74L packing capacity and a maximum expanded volume of 88L.

On paper, 74L is a really interesting target capacity. It gives you roughly 60% more packing capacity than a 46L carry-on without going all the way to a 90L+ checked bag.

For comparison, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch carry-on is listed at 46L, while the Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch checked bag is listed at 91L. That makes the Antler Soft Stripe Medium much roomier than a carry-on, but still a step down from the larger checked suitcase we normally use.

Size Comparison

Bag Listed Capacity Listed Weight General Role
Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch Carry-On 46L 5.4 lbs Carry-on travel
Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage 74L packing capacity / 88L max volume 5.29 lbs Smaller checked bag / in-between size
Travelpro Maxlite 5 25-inch Checked Bag 91L 6.8 lbs Full medium checked bag

Why I Bought the Antler Soft Stripe Medium

The appeal here is simple: it gives me more room than a carry-on without automatically jumping to a larger checked bag.

That can be a really useful size for:

  • Shorter cruises where carry-on-only feels too tight
  • Warm-weather cruises with lighter clothing
  • Fly-to-cruise trips where you want to keep checked luggage manageable
  • European cruise travel where trains, taxis and sidewalks may be part of the trip
  • Travelers who want a checked bag but do not want to overpack
  • Anyone who likes the idea of a smaller checked suitcase with real packing capacity
  • European travel, especially trips where you cannot quite get down to a single carry-on

  • Four spinner wheels – designed for upright rolling and easy movement.

Why a Smaller Checked Bag Can Be a Good Cruise Choice

A lot of cruise packing advice focuses on either carry-on-only travel or larger checked suitcases. I think there is a very practical space in between.

A smaller checked bag gives you more room for real cruise packing, but it can still be easier to handle than a bigger suitcase. That matters when you are moving through airports, hotel lobbies, cruise terminals, parking lots, elevators and cabin hallways.

It can also help limit overpacking. Larger bags are easy to fill just because the space is there. A middle-size checked bag gives you extra room compared with a carry-on, but still encourages a more focused packing list.

Softside Luggage for Cruise Travel

We still like softside luggage for a lot of travel. Hardside bags are popular, but softside luggage can be more forgiving when you are packing around shoes, packing cubes, toiletry bags, jackets and last-minute extras.

The exterior pocket is also useful. I would not use it for valuables, but it can be handy for flat or flexible items before the bag gets checked. Think printed paperwork, a lightweight jacket, luggage tag holders or other non-valuable items you may want to access before handing the bag over.

How I Plan to Use This Bag

I bought this as a smaller checked bag option. For trips where the Travelpro 21-inch carry-on feels too small but the Travelpro 25-inch checked bag feels like too much, this Antler bag looks like a very useful middle-ground choice.

For cruise travel, I can see using it as the main checked bag for a shorter or lighter-packing trip, then pairing it with a personal item or small carry-on for essentials.

As always, anything truly important should stay with you. Keep passports, IDs, boarding documents, medications, electronics, valuables, chargers and a change of clothes in your carry-on or personal item.

Cruise Packing Tips for This Size

  • Use packing cubes to keep the smaller checked-bag space organized.
  • Pack shoes toward the wheel end of the suitcase.
  • Use the expansion zipper as extra flexibility, not as an invitation to overpack.
  • Weigh the packed bag before flying.
  • Use a bright luggage tag or luggage strap so the bag is easy to spot.
  • Keep cruise documents, medication, electronics and valuables with you.
  • Unpack once onboard, then store the suitcase under the cruise cabin bed if space allows.

About Antler Luggage

Antler is a British luggage brand with roots going back to 1914. The company makes suitcases, travel bags and accessories, and its current lineup includes both hard shell and softside luggage options.

I was not specifically shopping for a new luggage brand when I found this bag. The size is what caught my attention first. But Antler’s long luggage background, lightweight softside design and this unusual medium capacity made the Soft Stripe Medium worth trying.

Who This Bag May Make Sense For

The Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage may make sense for travelers who want more packing room than a carry-on without moving up to a larger checked suitcase.

It looks especially interesting for cruisers who pack thoughtfully, want a lighter checked bag, or want something easier to manage during fly-to-cruise travel. The size is the star here. It fills a gap that many luggage lines skip over.

Final Thoughts

We have had very good luck with our Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch and 25-inch bags, so I was not necessarily looking to replace those. I was looking for something more specific: a rare in-between size.

That is what made the Antler Soft Stripe Medium Luggage interesting enough for me to buy. It sits between a carry-on and our larger 25-inch checked bag in terms of packing capacity, while staying very light for a checked suitcase.

For cruise travel, that could be a really useful size. I will update after I have more real-world travel time with it, but based on the dimensions, capacity and weight, this is exactly the kind of middle-ground bag I had been trying to find.

4-Compartment Magnetic Toothbrush Holder for Cruise Cabins

magnetic toothbrush holder for cruise cabin bathroom organization

4-Compartment Magnetic Toothbrush Holder for Cruise Cabins

Cruise cabin bathrooms are notoriously short on counter space. This 4-compartment magnetic toothbrush holder provides a simple way to move toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors and other small toiletries off the counter and onto a compatible magnetic cabin wall or door.

This version features four compartments, giving you separate spaces for multiple toothbrushes and other bathroom essentials. The magnetic design requires no adhesive or permanent installation, making it particularly convenient for a temporary space like a cruise cabin.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Magnetic Cruise Bathroom Organizer

A magnetic cruise bathroom organizer takes advantage of an often-overlooked storage option: the metal surfaces found in many cruise cabins. Instead of filling the small bathroom counter with toothbrushes and toiletries, you can move frequently used items onto a compatible wall or door.

That can be especially useful when two or more people are sharing a cabin. Four separate compartments provide room to keep multiple toothbrushes organized while also leaving space for toothpaste, razors or other smaller toiletries.

Because it mounts magnetically, you can also reposition the holder as needed during your trip and simply remove it when it is time to pack.

  • Four compartments for toothbrushes and small toiletries
  • Magnetic mounting for compatible metal surfaces
  • No adhesive required
  • Helps free up limited bathroom counter space
  • Easy to install, move and remove during your cruise

Not every surface in every cabin will necessarily be magnetic, so placement can vary by ship and stateroom.

See: Magnetic Toothbrush Holder for Cruise Cabins: Small Bathroom Organization Hack

That article takes a closer look at the idea of using magnetic toothbrush storage in a cruise cabin and why it can be a handy addition to your cruise packing list.

A Simple Way to Add Bathroom Storage

If you’re looking for an easy way to reclaim some bathroom counter space, this is a simple cruise organization accessory worth checking out. It adds dedicated storage without taking up additional counter space or requiring anything to be permanently attached to the cabin.

Morning Cruise Coffee Runs?? Pack a Drink Carrier!

I realize the way that people take their morning coffee can vary significantly. Some people don’t drink coffee, some people need/want coffee first thing, some people don’t. Some people like drip coffee, some people like espresso. It’s all great.

The way we do coffee on cruises is… first thing. We like to have our coffee in the cabin before having breakfast. The other thing is that we prefer lattes and the such, not drip coffee. Since we don’t stay in Star Class Suites 🙂 that means one of us has to make a coffee run.

A coffee run equates to grabbing two (preferably three) cups of scalding hot coffee. The is followed by navigating multiple elevators. Capped by the final feat of strength and endurance… opening the cabin door.

I’ve never been seriously burned but it is a perilous journey that can be uncomfortably hot and has resulted in spilled coffees.

The obvious solution to this is a drink carrier. Drinks go in the drink carrier, I’m not getting scalded, the coffee is much less likely to spill and it’s easy to carry. Whammo!

Some ships do offer drink carriers and that’s great. In my experience (mostly Royal Caribbean recently) most ships do not offer drink carriers. That’s especially true of the Crown Lounge where it takes an act of Congress to get half and half. What I have been offered is a… plate. I’ve given that a try and it works out about as well as you’d think it would. Needless to say… carrying coffees on a plate should be added as an Olympic sport.

An outstanding solution to this is to pack a fold flat reusable drink carrier.  This has become a must pack item for us that makes a regular part of our day a lot easier!

Here’s a hands on look at the Drink Caddy Drink Carrier

This is made out of a durable and lightweight nylon canvas sort of material. It folds flat for easy packing and storage

Here it is standing up.

This comes down to how you cruise, but for us, this thing is a home run and a must pack item for all of our cruises. It’s a simple and cheap solution to a problem that we – actually me as the coffee runner 🙂 – dealt with for years.

Blackpongo 18L Lightweight Packable Backpack: A Tiny Travel Daypack – $9.99

Blackpongo Packable Backpack

Blackpongo 18L Lightweight Packable Backpack: A Tiny Travel Daypack

A small extra backpack can be surprisingly useful on a cruise or other vacation. The Blackpongo 18L Lightweight Packable Backpack takes up very little luggage space and unfolds into a useful travel daypack when you need it.

My Experience with the Blackpongo Packable Backpack

I have this exact bag. This packable bag takes up very little room and unpacks to a lightweight 18L backpack. It is great for use as a daypack, for the beach or as a backup.

That makes it particularly useful for cruises, shore excursions and other trips where you may want an extra backpack without dedicating much suitcase space to a traditional daypack.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Good for Lightweight Travel Gear

The Blackpongo is a lightweight, minimally structured backpack. It works best for relatively light items such as sunscreen, a water bottle, travel documents, a light jacket and other daily essentials.

Because the bag has very little padding or structure, hard and oddly shaped items may press against your back. It would not be my first choice for carrying heavy loads over long distances, but that is not really its intended purpose.

Its main advantage is convenience. You can keep it packed inside your luggage and pull it out when you need an extra bag for sightseeing, the beach, the pool or a shore excursion.

Bottom Line

The Blackpongo 18L Lightweight Packable Backpack is a simple and useful addition to a cruise packing list. It takes up very little room and provides a lightweight daypack, beach bag or backup backpack when you need one.

Ceptics CTU-9C: A Royal Caribbean-Compatible European Travel Adapter

Royal Caribbean power adapter

Ceptics CTU-9C: A Royal Caribbean-Compatible European Travel Adapter

Many cruise cabins include a European Type C outlet that can provide another useful charging location. The Ceptics CTU-9C European Travel Adapter converts that outlet into one US-style AC receptacle while also providing one USB-A and one USB-C charging port.

That compact three-device configuration can be especially helpful on older cruise ships with relatively few cabin outlets.

One Adapter, Three Connections

The Ceptics CTU-9C includes:

  • One US-style AC receptacle
  • One USB-A charging port
  • One USB-C charging port
  • A compact European Type C plug
  • CE conformity marking and RoHS compliance

The USB-A and USB-C ports can each provide up to 5V/2.4A when used individually. When both USB ports are used at the same time, they share up to 12 watts of charging power.

This is useful for phones, watches, power banks and other everyday USB-powered travel gear. It is not intended to provide high-speed USB-C laptop charging.

Check Current Price & Availability →

Should Work on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises

Based on its current design and markings, the Ceptics CTU-9C should be a strong option for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.

Royal Caribbean’s current guidance allows a properly marked adapter with one AC outlet and up to four USB-A or USB-C ports. The CTU-9C stays comfortably within those limits.

Applicable Requirement Ceptics CTU-9C Check
Single AC outlet One AC receptacle
Four or fewer USB ports Two total: one USB-A and one USB-C
Recognized safety or conformity marking CE marked
No extension cord or power-strip design Plugs directly into the outlet

For complete details and additional charging options, see: Royal Caribbean Multi-Plug Adapter Ban: What Chargers Are Allowed?

Cruise-line policies can change, and every electrical item remains subject to inspection and final approval by the ship’s security team.

Bottom Line

The Ceptics CTU-9C European Travel Adapter offers a convenient way to make use of a European Type C cruise-cabin outlet. It provides one AC connection and two USB charging ports without creating the multiple-AC-outlet configuration prohibited by Royal Caribbean.

Its compact size also makes it useful in European hotels and during other international travel, provided every AC-powered device you connect is compatible with the available voltage.

New Updates… European Cruise Packing List: What to Pack & Why!

European Cruise Packing List: What to Pack & Why

This European cruise packing list focuses on the practical items that matter most when traveling through Europe before, during, and after your cruise. Packing for Europe comes with its own set of considerations, and it’s not about overhauling your entire suitcase. Think of this as adjusting your mindset more than anything else. Europe tends to reward comfortable, practical choices that still feel put-together—but where you’re going and when you’re traveling can make packing vastly different. Northern Europe in the winter requires a very different approach than Southern Europe or the Mediterranean during warmer months. Climate, daylight hours, walking conditions, and even local expectations can vary widely by region and season.

You’ll also likely be walking more than you expect, navigating older streets, public transportation, and compact accommodations. Clothing that layers well goes a long way when temperatures shift throughout the day or when plans move from sightseeing to dining out. Shoes deserve extra thought—comfort matters, but versatility does too. And because hotel rooms, elevators, and luggage storage can be smaller than what you’re used to, packing a bit lighter often makes the entire trip smoother.

This is an addendum to our primary cruise packing list. Many of those things apply, this write-up covers additional considerations that are unique to a European cruise vacation.

This isn’t about following strict rules or trying to pack like a local. It’s about packing with intention—bringing items that earn their place in your bag because they’re useful, comfortable, and flexible enough to handle a wide range of European travel scenarios.

Quick Summary

  • Pack lighter than you think – Europe often means cobblestones, stairs, compact rooms, and more transit.
  • Prioritize walking comfort – Shoes and blister prevention matter more than extra outfit options.
  • Layer-friendly clothing wins – Weather shifts quickly and varies by region and season.
  • Plan for phone dependence – Navigation, tickets, transit apps, photos, and translations drain batteries fast.
  • Anti-theft habits matter – Crowds + transit + tourist areas make simple deterrents worth it.

European Cruise Packing List: What to Pack & Why

  • If you have pre- or post-cruise add-ons (and why wouldn’t you?), consider minimizing down to carry-on luggage. Cobblestone streets, stairs-only access, and crowded trains all make lighter packing a big win.
  • Power bank – I don’t rely on power banks much when traveling, but Europe is different. Navigation, transit apps, tickets, and photos add up fast. For us, this is a must-pack item.
  • Comfortable walking shoes – Essential for long days on foot, uneven streets, and public transportation.
  • A dressier pair of shoes – Compact footwear that works for dinners, museums, or evenings out.
  • Layer-friendly clothing – Lightweight jackets, sweaters, or overshirts that adapt to changing conditions. On a recent Norway fjord cruise, I assumed that would be the coldest part of the trip—and I was wearing every layer I packed. Those layers gave me flexibility all week and enough warmth when it mattered.
  • Light zippered travel pants – Look for lightweight, quick-drying fabric and at least one zippered pocket for money or documents. I love my lululemon ABC 5 Pocket Pants.
  • Slim travel wallet – I downsized for my last Europe trip so I could keep it in zippered pockets and make it less noticeable to pickpockets. It worked so well I never switched back.
  • Zipper clips – Crowded tourist areas are notorious pickpocketing hot spots. These act as a simple deterrent. In busy areas, keep bags worn on the front of your body.
  • Crossbody bag – Big enough for essentials without becoming a burden, and easy to keep in front of you in crowds.
  • A phone lanyard – You’ll likely be using your phone constantly for navigation, tickets, and photos. That makes it a common target for thieves, and a lanyard helps prevent quick snatches or accidental drops.
  • Packable backpack – Takes up almost no space and is perfect for daily exploring.
  • Universal power adapter – I often recommend European Type C adapters for cruise cabins, but for a European cruise you’ll want a true universal adapter. We use models with multiple USB ports and bring two—one in each bag.
  • Weather protection – A travel umbrella or rain jacket is key. We buy inexpensive umbrellas and leave them behind at the end of the trip to make room for souvenirs. A packable rain jacket also doubles as a warming layer.
  • Laundry detergent sheets – Even if you don’t plan to wash laundry in the sink regularly, one or two take up almost no space and are perfect for sink washes or spot cleaning.
  • Moleskin for blisters – We walk a lot in Europe. Given the tiny size, this is an easy must-pack.
  • Extra medication and proper documentation – Some prescriptions are fine with labeled bottles; others may require additional paperwork.
  • International coverage and a backup eSIM – Connectivity matters for directions, reservations, transit, and tickets. I strongly recommend having a primary and backup carrier.

Pickpocket Defense Tips

  • Use zipper clips on all bag zippers to discourage quick access.
  • Zip before you move – Make a habit of checking zippers before boarding trains, buses, or entering crowded areas.
  • Keep your purse, crossbody bag, or backpack secured and worn on the front of your body when possible, especially in crowded areas.
  • Use pants with zippered pockets for wallets, passports, and important documents.
  • Avoid back pockets entirely – Even zippered back pockets are easier to access without you noticing.
  • Use interior pockets when available – Inside jacket pockets or hidden interior compartments are harder targets than exterior pockets.
  • Downsize to a slim travel wallet to keep a low profile and reduce bulk.
  • Never leave bags unattended in public spaces—keep them on your person at all times.
  • Keep bags closed at all times – Open totes and loosely closed backpacks are easy targets.
  • Don’t leave your phone sitting on tables or ledges. Consider a phone lanyard, and when using your phone in public, keep it close with a firm grip.
  • Limit what you carry day-to-day – Leave extra cards, documents, and cash locked in your cabin or hotel safe. If you don’t have it on you, it can’t be stolen.
  • Split up valuables – Don’t keep your passport, phone, wallet, and credit cards all in one place. If something does go missing, you won’t lose everything at once.
  • Be extra alert in transition zones – Train stations, escalators, elevators, doorways, and crowded public transportation are prime distraction spots.
  • Watch for distraction tactics – Bumping, asking for directions, spilling something, or unsolicited help can all be used to divert attention.

The Two Most Important Things: Passport and Money

Passport and money for international travel

In my opinion, the two most important things when traveling internationally are your passport and your money. Build redundancy into both. Carry multiple payment methods and spread them out between different bags or pockets so a single loss doesn’t become a trip-ending problem. Set up Apple Pay or similar mobile wallets as backups to your backups—because when something goes wrong, having options matters. Keep paper and digital copies of your passport and always keep it in a secure location.

I strongly recommend setting up a Wise account and card. Wise can hold destination currency, make purchases, provide access to compatible ATMs and act as a buffer between travel spending and your everyday financial accounts.

Packing Light for Europe: Things You Can Minimize or Leave Behind

The prevailing wisdom for Europe is simple: pack light. Most people don’t regret what they leave behind—they regret what they carried and never used.

  • Excess clothing – Re-wear items or plan for laundry. Most trips don’t require a fresh outfit every day.
  • “Just in case” shoes and clothes – Two pairs of shoes is usually enough. Extras add bulk and rarely get used.
  • Full-size toiletries – Decant into small containers or buy locally.
  • Hair dryers and styling tools – Often provided, and voltage differences can cause issues.
  • Multiple jackets or coats – One versatile outer layer usually covers most needs.
  • Heavy guidebooks – Digital guides are lighter, searchable, and easier to update.
  • Too many electronics – Extra devices and chargers tend to overlap in function.
  • Bulky travel pillows – Awkward to pack unless you truly rely on one.
  • Large amounts of cash – Cards and ATMs are widely available across Europe.
  • Duplicate accessories – Extra belts, hats, or bags that serve the same role.

Travel gets noticeably easier when your bag isn’t full of compromises. If something hasn’t clearly earned its place, it’s usually safe to leave it behind.

Conclusions

A European cruise rewards travelers who pack with intention. The goal isn’t to bring more — it’s to bring smarter. Prioritize comfort, mobility, and flexibility so you can move easily through cities, transit hubs, and long walking days without fighting your luggage. Layers, practical shoes, anti-theft habits, and reliable connectivity will matter more than extra outfits or bulky gear. When your bag supports your trip instead of slowing you down, you’ll spend less time managing stuff and more time enjoying Europe — which is the whole point.

FAQ: European Cruise Packing List

Do I need a power adapter for a European cruise?

Yes. Even if your cruise ship cabin uses North American-style outlets, your pre- and post-cruise time in Europe often won’t. A universal power adapter makes it easy to charge phones, cameras, and other devices in hotels, airports, and trains.

How many shoes should I bring for a European cruise?

For most travelers, two pairs is the sweet spot: one comfortable walking shoe for long port days and one dressier (but still comfortable) option for dinners, museums, or evenings out.

Is it better to use carry-on luggage for Europe?

In many cases, yes. European travel often includes cobblestones, stairs-only access, tight elevators, and crowded trains. Carry-on luggage (or a smaller rolling bag) makes moving around noticeably easier.

What’s the best way to prevent pickpocketing while sightseeing?

Use simple deterrents and habits: keep bags in front in crowds, use zippered pockets, avoid back pockets, and consider zipper clips or a phone lanyard. Most importantly, be extra alert in transit hubs and tight spaces where distraction tactics are common.

Do I need a backup eSIM or international plan on a European cruise?

Strongly recommended. You’ll rely on your phone more than you expect for navigation, tickets, transit apps, and reservations. A primary international plan plus a backup eSIM helps you stay connected if one provider has issues in a specific country or region.

What should I wear on a European cruise (especially in port)?

Think comfortable + put-together. Most days are walking-heavy, so prioritize breathable basics and pieces that layer well. A lightweight jacket or overshirt, comfortable pants/shorts (season dependent), and walking shoes cover most European port days.

Do I need to bring cash for Europe, or are cards enough?

Cards are widely accepted across Europe, but it’s smart to carry a small amount of cash for small purchases, tips where applicable, and places that are cash-preferred. The key is to avoid carrying large amounts—use ATMs as needed and keep cash split up.

Should I bring my passport ashore in European ports?

Usually, no—unless your cruise line specifically requires it for that port. Many travelers carry a photocopy (paper) and a digital copy on their phone and keep the actual passport secured in the cabin safe. If you do carry it, keep it in a zippered interior pocket or secured bag.

What’s the best way to handle laundry on a European cruise?

Plan for re-wears and do simple sink washes for essentials. Laundry detergent sheets take up almost no space and work well for spot cleaning or quick washes. For longer trips, consider using ship laundry services selectively or doing laundry during pre/post-cruise stays.

What’s one item people forget that matters most in Europe?

A blister-prevention plan. European cruising often involves far more walking on uneven streets than people expect. A small item like moleskin can save a vacation day, especially when you’re trying to keep up with excursions and long port days.

The Two Most Important Things When Traveling Internationally

Two Most Important Things When Traveling

The Two Most Important Things When Traveling Internationally: Your Passport and Money

Packing lists tend to focus on clothing, chargers, toiletries, adapters and other useful travel gear. Those things can make a trip easier, but most are replaceable.

When you strip international travel down to its essentials, two things matter more than almost everything else: control of your passport and reliable access to money.

Your passport comes first because it is the one essential item money cannot immediately replace. It establishes your identity and citizenship while allowing you to cross international borders and return home.

Money comes second because it is the universal travel problem solver. It can buy replacement clothing, transportation, lodging, food, a new phone, medical care and help with the cost of replacing a lost passport.

Your phone and essential medication also deserve special attention. A phone has become a central hub for communication, directions, payments, reservations and account access. Medication may be personally more important than anything else on this list, although many replacement situations can ultimately be addressed with money, documentation and medical assistance.

Stuff happens. Wallets are lost, bags are misplaced, cards stop working and pickpockets target distracted travelers. The goal is to make sure that one lost wallet, stolen bag, misplaced document or missing phone cannot disable your entire trip.

In This Post

Why Your Passport and Money Come First

A useful way to rank travel essentials is to ask two questions:

  1. What happens if I lose this item?
  2. Can another resource solve the problem?

Your passport ranks first because there is no true immediate substitute for it. A copy can help with replacement, and money can cover fees, transportation and emergency lodging, but neither allows you to cross a border or board an international flight in place of the original document.

Money ranks second because it can solve or reduce most other travel problems. If your luggage disappears, money can buy clothing and toiletries. If your phone breaks, money can buy a replacement. If you miss a train or your hotel reservation falls apart, money gives you other options.

Your phone earns honorable mention because it may provide access to maps, reservations, communication, digital payments and account authentication. Medication follows closely behind and may personally rank first for travelers who depend on medically essential treatments.

Number One: Your Passport

United States passport for international travel

Your passport is the most important individual item for international travel. A lost passport does not necessarily end a trip, but it can cause delays, added expenses, visits to an embassy or consulate and major itinerary changes.

Money can pay for transportation to an embassy, passport photos, fees and replacement lodging. It cannot authorize you to cross a border without the required travel document.

A Passport Card Is a Useful Secondary ID

A U.S. passport card can be useful in limited circumstances, but it is not valid for international air travel and should not be treated as a complete replacement for a passport book.

Even with that limitation, I recommend carrying one when possible. It is a quality backup identification document that takes up very little room and may be helpful if your passport book or wallet is lost.

Make Multiple Passport Copies

The U.S. Department of State recommends making copies of important travel documents and leaving one with a trusted friend or relative.

A practical passport backup system can include:

  • A printed copy carried separately from the original
  • A secure digital copy available from your phone or computer
  • A copy stored securely with a trusted person at home

A photocopy does not permit international travel. Its value is in providing your passport number and identifying information that may make replacement easier.

Consider keeping the passport copy in a secure digital travel file along with your visas, travel insurance, reservations, emergency contacts and prescription information. Do not depend entirely on internet access; a securely protected offline copy may also be helpful.

Store the Original Safely and Consistently

Avoid repeatedly moving your passport between pockets, bags and different locations. Choose a consistent location and return it there immediately after use.

When you do not need to carry it, a hotel or cruise cabin safe may be appropriate. When you need it with you, use a secure travel wallet, concealed pouch, zipped interior compartment or secure zipped pocket.

Do not place your passport in an unattended bag or carry it loosely with cash, cards and receipts.

Consider a passport holder that is designed to hold an Apple AirTag or similar tracker. This can provide another layer of protection, but it should not replace secure passport storage.

Know How to Get Help

Before departure, identify the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate at your destination. The State Department provides instructions for replacing a lost or stolen passport abroad.

A passport copy, another form of identification, your itinerary and information about where the passport was lost may help with the replacement process. Consular personnel may still be able to assist when every document is not available.

U.S. travelers can also consider enrolling in the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, commonly known as STEP. It can provide embassy messages and make it easier for officials to contact you or your emergency contact during certain emergencies.

Number Two: Reliable Access to Money

International travel money strategy

The most important financial travel item is not one particular card or stack of cash. It is reliable access to money through more than one method.

A wallet containing every card you own is not a backup system. It is a collection of payment methods that can all disappear at the same time.

Access to money creates options. It may allow you to take a taxi, book an emergency hotel, replace a damaged suitcase, obtain medical care or purchase a new ticket after a cancellation. Some solutions may be expensive, but access to funds can prevent a disruption from becoming a full-scale emergency.

Carry Cards From More Than One Issuer

Travel with at least two cards from different financial institutions when possible. Ideally, your backup should not rely on the same bank account, issuer or payment network as your primary card.

This protects against a card being lost, declined, frozen because of suspected fraud or rejected by a particular ATM or merchant.

Before departure, confirm that your cards can be used internationally and check whether your issuer accepts or requires travel notifications.

Keep Payment Methods Separate

Keep your primary card in your wallet and at least one backup somewhere separate and secure.

That could mean:

  • One card in your wallet and another in a secure travel organizer
  • One card carried by you and another carried by your travel partner
  • A backup card stored in your hotel or cruise cabin safe
  • Emergency cash stored separately from your daily spending money

The objective is simple: losing one wallet should not eliminate every way you have to pay.

Strongly Recommended: Wise Travel Account

Wise Travel Card

A Wise account and card can be funded with a limited travel balance rather than providing direct access to your primary checking account. Wise can also be used to hold destination currency, make purchases and withdraw money from compatible ATMs.

If your Wise card is lost or stolen, you can freeze it and generate a new digital card. This makes Wise a useful primary or backup payment method that can act as a firewall of sorts between travel transactions and your everyday accounts.

For a limited time, get a fee-free transfer of up to $600 USD when you use my referral link.

See: Using Wise for Travel: Convert Currency, Spend Abroad & Protect Your Everyday Card.

Carry Some Emergency Cash

Cards are widely useful, but they are not infallible. Cash can help when a payment terminal is offline, a taxi does not accept cards, an ATM is unavailable or a small business requires local currency.

The appropriate amount depends on the destination. Avoid carrying an unnecessarily large sum, and divide your emergency cash between secure locations.

Use Digital Wallets

Apple Pay for international travel

Adding eligible cards to Apple Pay, Google Pay or another supported digital wallet provides another way to pay if a physical card is damaged or unavailable. When traveling with a partner, consider setting up payment options on both phones.

We have found digital wallets to be one of our main payment methods when traveling in Europe. I primarily use my Apple Watch for payments. Using it means I rarely need to take out my wallet, reducing the chance that the wallet will be dropped, misplaced or exposed to a pickpocket.

Backups to the Backups

A trusted person at home should know how to reach you and may be able to transfer money or help coordinate assistance during a serious emergency.

The U.S. Department of State publishes information about emergency financial assistance for U.S. citizens abroad. This should be viewed as a last-resort resource rather than a replacement for your own backup plan.

Strategic Money Plan Summary

  • Set up a Wise account and card. It offers several useful travel features and can act as a buffer between travel spending and your everyday financial accounts.
  • Carry multiple credit cards from different issuers and, when possible, different payment networks.
  • Carry a small amount of emergency cash in the destination’s local currency.
  • Keep backup cards and cash separate from your primary wallet, such as in another secure bag, a hotel safe or with your travel partner. Make sure you and your travel partner know where the backups are stored.
  • Set up Apple Pay, Google Pay or another supported digital wallet on each traveler’s eligible phone or wearable device.

Honorable Mention: Your Phone

Your phone is not as irreplaceable as your passport or as universally useful as money, but it has become one of the most important tools carried by an international traveler. Beyond communication, we rely on our phones for directions, payments, boarding passes, reservations, authentication codes and more.

Losing a phone can therefore create several problems at once. You may lose your primary communication device while also losing access to payment methods, authentication codes, directions and important travel records.

Money can usually buy a replacement phone, which is why the phone does not outrank reliable access to funds. The immediate challenge is regaining access to your phone number, accounts and travel information.

Build a Phone Backup Plan

  • Use a screen lock and device tracking. Make sure Find My iPhone, Find My Device or a similar service is enabled before departure.
  • Back up important information. Store reservations, emergency contacts and document copies somewhere you can reach from another device.
  • Protect account access. Save backup authentication codes, confirm that account recovery information is current and know how to freeze or lock your payment cards. Do not make your phone the only way to access banking, email and travel accounts.
  • Download essential information. Keep offline maps, reservations and important contact details available when internet service is unavailable.
  • Carry backup power. A phone with a dead battery is temporarily almost as useless as a lost phone.
  • Have a connectivity backup. A second eSIM, physical SIM or another service can help if your primary carrier does not work as expected.
  • Save important contact information separately. Keep card issuer, mobile carrier and emergency contact information somewhere you can access without your phone.
  • Leverage your travel partner’s phone. When traveling with a spouse or trusted companion, distribute important capabilities between both phones. Make sure the loss of one phone does not eliminate every way to authenticate accounts, retrieve reservations or communicate.

Also Essential: Medication

Medication deserves special attention because it can be just as important as money or a passport for an individual traveler.

For someone who relies on insulin, seizure medication, an epinephrine auto-injector or another medically essential treatment, medication may personally rank first. This hierarchy is a general travel framework, not a judgment about anyone’s medical needs.

Medication ranks slightly lower in the broadest sense because many lost-medication situations can usually be addressed through a physician, pharmacy, clinic, hospital or travel insurance assistance service. Those solutions generally require access to money.

Replacement is not guaranteed, however. Brand names, formulations and dosages vary between countries. Some medications may be unavailable, restricted or classified as controlled substances. That is why “I can just buy more” should never be the entire plan.

Medication Backup Steps

  • Keep essential medication with you. Do not pack medication you cannot easily replace exclusively in checked luggage.
  • Bring extra doses. Carry enough for the scheduled trip plus a reasonable reserve for delays, cancellations or lost doses.
  • Retain original labels. Original containers can identify the medication and show that it was prescribed to you.
  • Carry documentation. Bring a prescription copy, generic medication name, dosage, prescriber contact information and any necessary doctor’s letter.
  • Check local laws. Verify medication restrictions for every destination and transit country.
  • Plan for special storage. Confirm how refrigerated or temperature-sensitive medication will be protected during transit and at your destination.

See: CDC guidance for traveling abroad with medicine.

Quick International Travel Checklist

Before leaving the country:

  • Confirm your passport’s expiration date and destination validity requirements.
  • Create printed and secure digital passport copies.
  • Store the original passport in a consistent, secure location.
  • Carry at least two payment cards from different issuers.
  • Keep cards and emergency cash in separate locations.
  • Set up Wise or another independent travel payment option.
  • Add eligible cards to your digital wallet.
  • Enable your phone’s screen lock, tracking and backup features.
  • Save offline maps, reservations and backup authentication codes.
  • Pack essential medication in your carry-on with extra doses.
  • Carry prescription information and verify destination restrictions.

Final Thoughts

Most things packed for an international trip are conveniences. Your passport and reliable access to money are infrastructure.

Your passport preserves your ability to identify yourself, cross borders and return home. Money gives you the ability to respond when plans fall apart and can solve or reduce nearly every other ordinary travel problem.

Your phone follows as an honorable mention because it now provides access to communication, directions, reservations, payments and important accounts. Medication also deserves special attention because it may be essential to your health, even though replacement is sometimes possible with money, documentation and medical assistance.

The real travel hack is redundancy. Protect your passport and maintain secure copies. Carry more than one way to pay and keep those methods in separate locations. Back up your phone and avoid making it the only way to access important information or accounts. Bring extra medication and the documentation needed to replace it.

You cannot eliminate every travel risk, but you can prevent one lost wallet, stolen bag, misplaced document or missing phone from taking down the entire trip.

Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Luggage Tags – $5.99, $1.50 each

Cruise Luggage Tags, NTONPOWER Cruise Tags Holders with Steel Loops Clear Cruise Luggage Tags for Cruise Ships Fits All Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Cruise Cruise Essentials in 2024

I highly recommend cruise luggage tag holders. These are sturdier and more secure than tape or staples. Having these also means you don’t need to carry along… tape or staples. These also keep your tags dry (and readable) in the event of rain. Because your tags are more likely to stay on, you’re less likely to have delayed luggage on the ship. Size of these varies based on cruise line. Look for one that’s compatible with your cruise line.

If you’re flying to your embarkation port I don’t recommend putting cruise tags on your luggage until after your flight. That’s especially true if you’re taping and stapling vs using luggage tags. Luggage tag holders would probably make the flight okay, but, to me, there’s no sense subjecting these to the wear and tear of airline luggage handling.

Print and fold (or cut) your printable luggage tags at home, put them in holders and pack. Put on the night before you cruise and you’ll all set.

Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage

Samsonite Solyte DLX Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Midnight Black, Checked-Medium 25-Inch

Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage for Cruises & Travel

The Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage combines the flexibility of a softside suitcase with useful organization, exterior pockets and four-wheel maneuverability. Its medium checked size can be a practical option for cruises, longer vacations and other trips that require more packing room than a carry-on provides.

The expandable design provides some additional flexibility when needed, while the interior tie-down straps and storage pockets help keep clothing and smaller items organized. Because it is softside luggage, travelers also get exterior pockets that are not commonly found on hardside suitcases.

Samsonite Solyte DLX Features

  • Four multidirectional spinner wheels
  • Expandable softside design
  • Rugged polyester weave exterior
  • Spacious exterior storage pockets
  • WetPak pocket for damp or potentially messy items
  • Zippered interior mesh pocket
  • Smart Fix buckles that help keep tie-down straps out of the way while packing
  • Integrated privacy ID tag
  • 10-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship

Size and Weight

Samsonite provides separate packing and overall measurements:

  • Packing dimensions: 25.25″ x 18″ x 9.5″
  • Overall dimensions: 28.5″ x 19″ x 11.5″
  • Weight: 8.9 pounds

Overall dimensions include components such as the wheels and handles. The three listed overall measurements total 59 linear inches, placing the suitcase below the commonly used 62-linear-inch limit for standard checked luggage.

Expansion, overpacking and individual airline policies can affect whether a bag qualifies as standard checked luggage, so always confirm the requirements for each airline included in your trip.

At 8.9 pounds empty, the suitcase leaves approximately 41 pounds available for clothing and other contents when working with a 50-pound checked-bag limit. Weigh the completed suitcase before leaving home rather than relying on its empty weight or advertised capacity.

Useful Organization for Cruise Travel

The WetPak pocket is a particularly useful addition for cruise vacations. It provides a separate place for a damp swimsuit, wet water shoes or other items you would rather not place directly against clean clothing.

Exterior pockets can be handy for flat, nonvaluable items that may need to remain accessible during a trip. Passports, money, medications, identification, electronics and other essentials should remain securely with you rather than inside checked luggage.

The Smart Fix buckles are another thoughtful feature. They are designed to keep the interior tie-down straps out of the way while the suitcase is being packed, reducing the need to repeatedly move straps from underneath clothing.

Softside Flexibility with a Trade-Off

Softside luggage provides flexible packing space and convenient exterior pockets, but it does not offer the rigid exterior protection of a hardside suitcase. Travelers carrying fragile items may prefer a hard shell or should pack those items carefully inside the center of the bag.

The nearly nine-pound empty weight is also worth considering for travelers who routinely approach airline weight limits. The best way to avoid overweight baggage fees is to weigh the packed suitcase before heading to the airport or cruise terminal.

Check the Selected Size and Color

The Samsonite Solyte DLX collection may be available in multiple sizes, colors and luggage sets. Confirm that the selected option is the 25-inch checked suitcase before ordering, as dimensions, weight and included features may vary between configurations.

Is the Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch a Good Choice?

The Samsonite Solyte DLX 25-Inch Checked Luggage is a strong option for travelers who prefer softside flexibility, exterior storage and an organized interior. Its spinner wheels should make it easier to maneuver through airports, cruise terminals and hotels, while the WetPak pocket adds a genuinely useful feature for beach and cruise vacations.

Travelers primarily concerned with rigid protection or the lowest possible empty weight may prefer a different style. For those who want an expandable medium checked suitcase with accessible pockets and practical organization, the Solyte DLX is well worth considering.

tomtoc Passport Holder – AirTag Compatible! – On Sale for $32, Prime Exclusive

tomtoc Passport Holder Family with RFID Blocking, Passport Wallet Women Men, with Airtag & Sim Card Holder and Eject Pin, Travel Document Organizer with Wrist Strap, Up to 4 Passports, Water-resistant

tomtoc Passport Holder with AirTag Pocket: Organize and Help Track Travel Documents

The tomtoc Passport Holder combines a family-size travel document organizer with a dedicated hidden pocket for an Apple AirTag. It provides one place to carry passports, payment cards, boarding passes, cash and other important travel documents while also giving Apple users another way to locate the organizer if it is misplaced.

The AirTag pocket is what makes this organizer especially interesting. Instead of dropping an AirTag loosely into a larger bag, you can keep it directly with some of your most important travel documents. That can be useful in airports, cruise terminals, hotels and other places where passports frequently move between a safe, carry-on bag and your hand.

The Hidden AirTag Pocket Is the Standout Feature

The tomtoc Passport Holder includes a concealed interior slot designed specifically for an Apple AirTag. The AirTag does not come with the organizer, but adding one lets you check the holder’s available location through Apple’s Find My app.

That could be particularly helpful when you are trying to determine whether the organizer is still in your hotel room, inside your luggage or somewhere else you recently visited. When the AirTag is nearby, Find My may also help you pinpoint its location or play a sound.

An AirTag does not prevent theft and cannot guarantee that a missing passport will be recovered. It is an additional location tool rather than a replacement for keeping passports secured and under your control. Still, placing a tracker directly with your travel documents adds a practical capability that most basic passport wallets do not offer.

Room for Multiple Passports and Travel Documents

This is larger than a simple passport cover. The interior organization is designed to hold the documents and smaller essentials needed by an individual, couple or family.

Storage includes:

  • Four dedicated passport slots
  • Four credit card or identification card slots
  • A compartment for tickets and boarding passes
  • A larger pocket for cash or additional documents
  • A zippered mesh pocket for coins and small items
  • An elastic pen holder
  • A hidden Apple AirTag pocket

Keeping passports and supporting documents together can make check-in, customs and cruise embarkation easier, especially when one traveler is responsible for carrying documents for several people.

Useful for Cruise Travel

A passport organizer can be particularly convenient during a cruise vacation. In addition to passports, it can hold cruise paperwork, transfer information, travel insurance cards, emergency cash and the payment card you plan to use during the trip.

The exterior quick-access pocket provides a convenient temporary spot for a boarding pass or another document that needs to be presented repeatedly. Because that pocket does not zip closed, sensitive documents should be moved back inside the organizer when they are no longer needed.

The included wrist strap also gives you a more secure grip while standing in an airport, customs or cruise terminal line. Once you are finished checking in, the complete organizer can go back into a secured personal item, carry-on bag or room safe.

RFID Blocking and International Travel Features

The organizer incorporates an RFID-blocking layer intended to help protect compatible contactless cards from unauthorized scans. This does not replace normal card and identity-security precautions, but it is a useful additional feature for an organizer that may hold payment cards and identification.

A small SIM card holder and ejector tool are also built into the design. This can be helpful for international travelers who change physical SIM cards when arriving at a destination. The holder gives you a designated place to store the removed SIM rather than dropping it into an unmarked pocket or plastic bag.

Travelers who primarily use eSIMs may not need this feature, but it takes up very little room and could also be useful for storing a compatible memory card.

Water-Resistant Cordura Construction

The exterior is made from 840D Cordura ballistic nylon, a durable material well suited to repeated travel. The main compartment uses a water-resistant zipper to provide additional protection from splashes and light rain.

This organizer should be considered water resistant rather than completely waterproof. It can provide some protection against everyday travel conditions, but it should not be submerged or relied upon as a waterproof passport case for beach and water activities.

Things to Consider

This is a relatively substantial travel organizer. Its larger size provides room for several passports and a variety of supporting documents, but travelers carrying only one passport and one card may prefer a slimmer wallet.

Remember that neither RFID blocking nor an AirTag replaces careful handling of your passport. Keep the organizer with you during transit and store it in a secure location when it is not needed.

Is the tomtoc Passport Holder Worth Considering?

The tomtoc Passport Holder with AirTag pocket is a strong option for travelers who want to keep several passports and related documents together. Its internal organization, durable exterior, wrist strap and quick-access pocket make it useful for airports, cruise terminals and international travel.

The hidden AirTag slot is the feature that separates it from many competing passport organizers. Adding an AirTag gives Apple users a practical way to help locate the holder if it is left behind or misplaced—an especially worthwhile capability for something carrying passports and other difficult-to-replace documents.
