Zipper Clips for anti-theft protection and in transit security

We’re getting ready for a trip to Europe. That trip includes a time in London, a cruise to four Northern European countries and a time in Paris. in the process of preparing we’re coming up with strategies to defend against pickpockets in London and Paris. One tip that we picked up while watching this video was to put locks on backpack, crossbody bag and purse zippers.

Needing to have a key to open a zipper on my backpack doesn’t sound that appealing, but at the same time I like the idea of securing zippers so they’re more difficult to access. Doing some digging I found these clips. These will add an extra level of protection without requiring a key. After all, a lock isn’t going to protect the contents if the bag is completely stolen anyway. These are easy to break off. The idea is to make it more difficult to open the zipper and these clips do that.

Beyond using these for anti-theft, I can see these being helpful for securing luggage zippers against accidentally opening during checked luggage handling and security backpack zippers on a regular basis. I know a zipper working it’s way open and something falling out is unlikely, but I still get concerned when I have things like cash and passports in zippered pockets.

Having duct tape while traveling can be a lifesaver when traveling. After an airline shredded most of my luggage on a cruise out of Miami, duct tape became the way I kept my suitcase closed.

A full size roll of duct tape is large and heavy. These smaller rolls are the way to go.

Multi USB port charging block
A power bank. Charge the power bank when you’re out and about during the day. Use it in the evening to charge phones and such and free up an outlet.

It’s nice to have some laundry detergent when traveling if you need to wash something in the sink when you’re on the go.

The great thing about these is that they solid sheets. That means no leaking in your luggage. It saves weight in comparison to liquid detergent.

We use AirTags on our travel backpacks, carry ons and checked bags and love them. It’s really nice to tell where your bag is and know that it’s made in on the plane or ship. Note that these (at least AirTags) don’t work perfectly at sea. If you see that your bags are 20 miles behind you in the middle of the ocean… don’t worry they’re probably still in your cabin. DEAL! Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Luggage Tags – $4.74

I highly recommend cruise luggage tag holders. These are sturdier and more secure than tape or staples. Having these also means you don’t need to carry along… tape or staples. These also keep your tags dry (and readable) in the event of rain. Because your tags are more likely to stay on, you’re less likely to have delayed luggage on the ship. Size of these varies based on cruise line. Look for one that’s compatible with your cruise line.

If you’re flying to your embarkation port I don’t recommend putting cruise tags on your luggage until after your flight. That’s especially true if you’re taping and stapling vs using luggage tags. Luggage tag holders would probably make the flight okay, but, to me, there’s no sense subjecting these to the wear and tear of airline luggage handling.

Print and fold (or cut) your printable luggage tags at home, put them in holders and pack. Put on the night before you cruise and you’ll all set.

I’ve been a big proponent of using the 220 outlet in your cruise cabin. They’re cheap and small and magically give you access to another outlet that you wouldn’t have otherwise been able to use. Note that these are not voltage converters. Many electronics are designed to operate in the 220 volt range.

There are lots of cool options available that get you a North American style outlet (or multiple outlets) along with USB ports.

The problem for Royal Caribbean Cruisers… Recently Royal announced that multi-plug adapters are banned.

My current understanding of that rule is that multi-USB charging blocks are allowed. But anything that has an AC outlet on it must have only an AC outlet and nothing else.

As far as compliant European converters, those are kind of hard to find since many of them include multiple outlets and most of the times include one or more USB ports. After all… why not do that?

Anyway, I have found an adapter that should work with Royal’s new rules. It is and European to C to single North American style outlet with no USB ports.

Another really good option for this outlet is a multi port USB charger. A lot of the items were charging are USB anyway. Since this model has no AC outlet it should be compliant with Royal’s rules.
